OUR AMERICAN HERITAGES
The Bible and Religious Freedom
-the greatest legacy of America to the
Philippines
- Filipinos became free to choose there
own religion.
-started the great religious revival in
the country
Other Christian churches:
Presbyterians-in 1899
Baptists- in 1900
Disciple of Christ-in 1905
Methodist Episcopalians-in 1908
Aglipayanism- in 1902 by Isabelo de los
Reyes and Gregorio Aglipay

Revival of protestanism such as:


non-Christian believers
muslims
Training in democracy
Democracy- greatest heritage of America
to the Philippines
- free national elections, women
voters ,free press, many political
parties and religious freedom
1898-America stopped us from becoming
democratic
1899-1901 – we were already on our way to
democracy under the short lived First
Philippine Republic
Free education
education was no longer the privilege
of just a few rich families but even
the poor
American soldiers- 1st teachers
August 1898- 7 school were
opened
August 23,1901 -1st batch of professional
teachers came from U.S. On board
the transport ship Thomas
- they were called Thomasites
Pensionados-Filipino scholars sent to U.S.
for free government pensions in
American colleges and universities
Better health
-inculcated and taught more about health and
sanitation including hygiene
- government built free Phil. General hospital in
Manila and in other places in the provinces
- introduction of flush toilet
sicknesses wiped out and reduced:
epidemics of cholera
small pox
plague
tuberculosis
malaria
typhoid
English language
English -taught in all schools then
-became the official language of
government and business
-even gave English names such
as Bobby, John ,Mary ,Lily ,
Rosie and more.
Filipino writers won abroad:
Jose Garcia Villa , Celso Al Carunungan ,and
Nick Joaquin
Carlos P. Romulo- won the prestigious pulitizer
prize for journal in 1942
Free press
1902 –Filipinos started more and more freedom
1930- Filipinos has the freest press in Asia
Filipinos who started there own newspapers:
Manuel L. Quezon-founded
THE FILIPINO HERALD in 1920
- 1st Filipino daily newspaper
Ramos Roces-owned THE GRAPHIC the most read
weekly magazine
Filipinos who wrote newspapers in dialect:
Sergio Osmena – founded NUEVO DIA in Cebu in1900
Rafael Palma and Teodoro Kalaw-eddited the EL
RENACEMIENTO the most controversial
newspaper
Alejandro Roces Sr.- owned the LA VANGUARDIA the most
popular Spanish daily.
Diet and Dress
American types of food :
corn flakes, oat meal, ham ,egg
sandwiches, hamburgers ,ice cream
chewing gum and many more
Filipino dress:
men-wear trousers with belt, and
suspenders, polo shirts ,tennis
shoes
women-hemlines became shorter, they
wear fancy hats shirt and blouse ,high
heeled shoes, silk stockings and
put on make-ups
Democratic family life and social control
-gone were the old customs of addressing
elders
- it is no longer fashionable to go home
when the church bells at 6 p.m.
-American holidays:
Labor day- May 1

November

Women's rights
- Filipino women enjoyed greater right
such as the freedom to:
vote, work in office, hold public office,
study with men in school, go out with
out chaperon

Physical education –became part of school

calisthenics
Indoor games: bowling, billiards, poker, and bridge
Basketball- now the national sports
Boxing –was introduced and PANCHO VILLA 1st
Filipino to win the Flyweight boxing
championship in the world
1908-Manila carnival became the a national
event
Movies and Vaudeville
1903-1st movie house Cine Rizal was built in Tondo
Cine ideal – later pioneered by the Rocess brothers at
Rizal avenue
Edward Meyer Gross-an American army surgeon made
the 1st local
Film in 1912 LA VIDA DE DR. RIZAL w/c was then an
instant hit
1929-1st taking American movie came 1 year after it was
shown in
U.S.
Vodavil or vaudeville- replaced the zarzuela and moro-moro
in popularity
-Features singers , comedians or the superstars like
Atang De la Rama Kathy de la Cruz ,Pugo and Togo
Music and dance
-Spread of American songs and dances
-Filipinos learned to croon popular hit songs from
America , to play American jazz, and to dance the
charlestone,boogie woogie , fox trot

Houses
- New types of houses and constructions like;
bungalows, chalets, two story concrete houses and
earthquake proof buildings were made
- American buildings : Manila post office building
, Philippine general hospital, and the Philippine
normal college
Art
-during American era rural landscape ,and scenes from ordinary life
became the new style
Famous painters: Fabian de la Rosa, Fernando Amorsolo, Emilio
Alvero, and Victorio C. Edades
Guillermo Tolentino-famous sculptur then who made the huge Bonifacio
monument at Grace park Caloocan

Science
- Introduction of modern science, training Filipino scientist, scientific
organizations and even sent Filipino scholars to America to study
modern science
American blood
-there were American who married Filipinos
-Filipinos learned American habits such as:
frankness, practicality, hard work, open mindedness, and fairness. But
there were also bad habits like
materialism, ruthlessness, rudeness, drunkenness and selfishness.
Historical values
-We had mix cultural values w/c is Asian, Spanish, Mexican, and
American
Cultural legacies of America:
1.We got a training in democracy under the protection of U.S
2.Widespread of the use of bible and religious freedom
3.Free education
4.Knowledge of the English language kept us up to date
5.Free press and better health
6.Americanization of diet ,dress, family life
,recreation, art, science, and popular culture enriched our life
7.Many Filipinos have American ancestors and Americans who
have Filipino blood
8.We developed a liking for imported household things
, appliances, clothes , books, toys , games ,and food.
But this attitude is called colonial mentality or showing alack of
patriotism
