inspiration to action”. Its main
goal is to promote women’s
empowerment, personal and
professional development, and
women in leadership roles,
with the hope of inspiring other
girls and women to believe
in themselves, and to build
alliances supporting each other.
This brochure reflects the authentic voices of women from different
parts of Ukraine with diverse backgrounds, professions and
experiences, and is written for other women and girls striving to
define success, build their careers and to fulfill their life goals.
Inspired by the United Nations (UN) seventh Secretary-General,
Kofi Annan, we share his strong belief that there is no tool for
development more effective than the empowerment of women.
In this brochure, we introduce twelve Ukrainian women serving
the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)
and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna.
They represent diverse areas of work ranging from sustainable
industrial development, finance and auditing, energy management,
nuclear safety and security, technology and applications to
external relations.
BEREHYNYA
PROTECTOR, “THE MAIN GODDESS OF LIFE”
Each woman is presented in two images: first, in a national costume
– as a “keeper” of the Ukrainian national culture and traditions,
and second, in a daily office outfit. Each provides a story consisting
of three parts:
“Ukraine & I” shares heartfelt thoughts about women’s
origin and spiritual ties with Ukraine;
“UN & I” gives a glance our professional work and how we
connect it with other spheres of our life; and
“My message” leaves you an exclusive inspirational
message from each woman.
The publication has been launched in cooperation with the
Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the International Organizations
in Vienna. The VIC Ukrainian Club would like to express its sincere
gratitude to the editor Richard Lee, photographers Oleksandr
Maistrenko and Maria Klymenko, designer Kateryna Molchanova,
project coordinator Oksana Pavliska and all others who
contributed to this publication.

“Berehynya” is a spiritual symbol deeply rooted in the ancient
history of Ukraine that is translated from Ukrainian to mean
protector, guardian and patron. It is presented in the form of a
woman holding her hands high. The doves on her palms symbolize
luck, good fortune and freedom.
It is associated with motherhood and considered “the Goddess of
life”, symbol of fertility, nature, peace and prosperity. As such, it is
widely featured in Ukrainian embroidery, home décor and jewelry
because of its mystical meaning and protective power from natural
disasters, disease and misfortune. Usually, this symbol is defined
by red color to symbolize love, passion, happiness and well-being.
Our adapted symbol of Berehynya is wearing the crown and
jewelry of t he Ukrainian queen Olga, the prominent regent of Rus,
reminding us of the strong role of women in building a nation, a
state, peace and culture.
The state coat of arms of Ukraine, “Tryzub”, is also imbedded in the
outfit of our Berehynya. Its trident form was historically the sign of
the Princely State of Volodymyr.
Berehynya embodies a full harmony of the past, the present and the
future, and the continuity of generations.
Ukraine, as one of the founding members of the United Nations, has established
a strong record of adherence to the purposes and principles enshrined in the UN
Charter, and continues to substantially contribute to and promote their global
implementation.
Equal rights of men and women belong to the core principles of the United Nations
Charter and gender equality is positioned among the key drivers of sustainable
development.
Since the renewal of its independence, Ukraine has always placed focus on
implementation of international obligations and commitments on gender equality,
which are duly incorporated in the Ukrainian Constitution. These efforts received a
strong impetus after the Revolution of Dignity of 2014 and were reinforced by strong
determination of Ukraine to advance democratic transformations where women play
a significant and equal role in all walks of life.
The recent years have proved that Ukrainian women became critical agents of change,
playing a pivotal role in enhancing national security and contributing to robust
economic and cultural development of the country.
I hope that the several examples of successful Ukrainian women’s stories highlighted
in this brochure will motivate and inspire more women to pursue their life goals and
follow with dedication their professional aspirations.

UNIDO’s mandate on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9, industry, innovation,
and infrastructure, is highly linked with gender equality: progress on one enables and
accelerates progress on the other.
In this sense, working towards gender equality not only helps realize women’s
rights, it’s also smart economics. Women directly contribute to higher levels of
industrialization and more sustained growth rates as economic actors, leaders, and
consumers. The question now is: what do we need to do to tap into these gains and
support women as leaders?
This requires the concerted efforts of both men and women. The Office for Gender
Equality and Empowerment of Women at UNIDO strives to empower women both
economically and within leadership. We therefore appreciate the focus that the 2018
Ukrainian Week has put on the topic of women in leadership and strongly support
these activities.
We hope that together we can continue to inspire and empower the future
generation of women leaders.

While studying International Relations, I always had the
dream to work for the UN arranging diplomatic events
and working with people from all over the world. Back
then it seemed unrealistic, but today, it has become a
career which gives me great pleasure, an ultimate sense
of accomplishment, and an opportunity to discover my
potential.
My work at the IAEA has allowed me to develop my skill sets
in the area of data management, particularly in handling
different types of databases. I am pleased to work with the
professional staff, whose work experience and performance
encourage me to develop my professional skills and
abilities.
My Message
I am convinced that every woman should believe in herself
and in her abilities. Each of us has to set goals and work
towards their achievements, in spite of forthcoming barriers.
Persistence and introspection, coupled with openness,
ambitions and motivation can materialize everything that
has been planned.
It is imperative to surround yourself with successful and
interesting people, who motivate you for further self-
development. The most important thing is to always stay
optimistic and positive and eventually success will be
yours.

Ukraine means for me hard-working, generous, wise and
talented people, who care for and respect their traditions
and culture, passing them from one generation to the next.
Celebrating our feasts, singing traditional songs, speaking
my native Ukrainian language gives me a deep sense of my
identity with my family and my homeland.
I come from Lviv, which is one of the oldest cities located
in the western part of Ukraine. It is considered the cultural
capital of the country and each street is filled with charm,
aromas of coffee, and architectural perfection. Speaking with
local people and listening to their stories and mysterious
legends, revives in me, the atmosphere and spirit of my
hometown.

Ukraine and I UN and I

Growing up in a small village of the Kotsyubyntsi, Ternopil
region allowed me to learn the splendor of our culture,
and the elegance of its traditions and customs. My home
country has unbelievable natural settings - rolling green
hills, snow peaked mountains and beautiful sunsets.
The dynamic history of Ukraine has inspired a diverse
range of architecture. Our songs, dances, embroidery,
and craftsmanship have stood the test of time and foreign
powers. We have a complex past, but at the same time we
have a prospective future.
With little experience, but great ambitions I started at
UNIDO as an intern. From the first day I fell in love with
the place and its people. The UN gave me the opportunity
for growth and self-development. I met amazing people
who become my closest friends. I had always dreamed of
working in a dynamic, multi-cultural environment, and
now it has become a reality.
Today, as a member of the Information Technology
Services Division, I am inspired to go beyond the area of
my expertise by developing new competencies.

Ukraine has so much to offer to its guests to explore and

experience, not only because it is expansive, but also
because it is so magnificent.

Before moving to Vienna, I worked for the Organization for
Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in Kyiv. During
the last eleven years I have been working for the IAEA in
the Department of Technical Cooperation, the IAEA’s main
channel for delivering development assistance to its Member
States.
The IAEA inspires and motivates me, as well as contributes
to my personal comprehensive professional growth and
overall cultural development.
Its multinational and multilingual environment promotes
more understanding and respect for different cultures,
expands your horizons and cultivates new ideas and
perspectives for facing challenges in our complex world.
Being a part of the United Nations family is a great honor and
joy for me. It is a unique place where people work together

I was born in the Cherkasy region, a picturesque land where
the great Ukrainian poet, Taras Shevchenko, was born and
lived. I grew up in a small village with the melodic name
Vasyutyntsi nestled by the grand Dnipro River.
I am very proud to be Ukrainian. I love my country endlessly
and passionately, and wherever I am, I am always eager to
tell others about Ukraine, about its rich culture, unique
beauty, and heroic history. I believe in the future of Ukraine,
its power, its historical mission, and its talented and hard-
working people.

VALENTYNA DZYUBENKO
UN and I
I love my work and I am proud to be part of the UN. In my
assignment in the Department of Energy at the IAEA, I am
connected with representatives from almost the entire
globe. This provides me with great opportunities to learn the
culture, habits and perceptions not from tourist journeys,
but from daily communication. For me being Ukrainian in
the UN means to represent its cultural heritage, intellectual
property and openness to the entire the world.
My Message
Together with my two children, we are able to communi-
cate in Ukrainian, German, English and Russian. The more
languages we understand - the more open the world is for us.
I strongly believe that communication helps to find mutual
understanding and consensus.
The more that people communicate, the less they need inter-
mediaries for mutual understanding and the less problems
they encounter - between people and their States.
Your willingness to exchange and understand different
points of view opens up more roads for cooperation and de-
velopment in your life.

Ukraine and I
I was born in Mariupol, on the coast of the gentle, warm,
calm and prolific Azov Sea. The air is filled with the aroma of
steppe grasses, orchards, endless wheat fields, and the smell
of the sea.
It is unlikely that there is a region in Ukraine, with a more
mixed composition of nationalities inhabiting my country. It
is a multicultural tapestry: Tatar, Armenian, Jewish, Russian,
Bulgarian, Gypsy, Belarusian, and Greek influences have
impacted the picture of the region. Having an international
port, it is also one of the industrial hubs in Ukraine with
high potential.

MARYNA GUSHCHYNA
UN and I
I am an associate Professor with a twenty year university
career and broad experience in the field of nuclear
engineering education, which brought me to the UN in 2007.
My knowledge gained at the IAEA was used to develop a new
training course called “Management of Nuclear Knowledge”.
Participating in the development of projects, by exchanging
ideas and opinions, I see how effective solutions are
born from collaboration. It is inspiring to see the transfer
of experience and knowledge accumulated in different
countries for application to the entire world.

A woman is endowed with the ability to create and connect,
first of all, as a daughter, a sister, a wife, and a mother.
I wish for all women to believe in themselves, to work to
improve their knowledge and skills and to never give up!

I close my eyes: green fields with sunflowers, bright sun
shines, blue river merges with the sky. I see a white bell tower
and hear the bandura playing. Further - green mountains
are cloaked in a violet fog. The fields of Tavria, gray-haired
Kyiv, Lviv with the smell of coffee and the Carpathians, are all
Ukraine. It is my mother land.
I was born and grew up on the shore of the Black Sea.
This is an ancient and beautiful land sung in the legends of
different peoples.
Ukraine is its people who build the country. Industriousness,
cordiality and education are the main properties of
Ukrainians. Traditionally and today, women in our society
were respected members of society and the spiritual
keepers of the family. I believe in Ukrainians and in Ukraine.

My assignments at the United Nations are not accidental
for me. Here I met people who gave me a chance for growth
and to develop my skills. Even if somebody has potential but
little working experience, here is a favorable environment
for personal development and growth.
In the team with my beloved colleagues, I learned to
combine my own creativity and a daily routine, which is
an integral part of large-scale projects and often disliked
by artists. Having received such a privilege to be part of
the UN, I was driven to work further on my personal and
professional development.

I was born in a small Ukrainian town, called Sumy. The
peculiarity of this northeastern region is its sincere
people and their willingness to provide help and support.
I am bilingual, I communicate in Russian and Ukrainian.
Despite this, I feel 100% Ukrainian.
I grew up in an atmosphere of tolerance and respect for
different nationalities, religions and languages. In my
daily work, I try to convey these important basic values in
today’s world, showing that it is impossible to be a patriot
of your own country without respecting the culture and
traditions of others.
My Message
Life teaches me to be strong and resilient. I believe,
that it is one of the biggest challenges for women to
face: combining the ability to adequately withstand the
impacts of day-to-day life and, at the same time, stay
gentle and graceful.
Only love for other people and for life in general will
help women realize where to be the robust protectors of
essential values and where to show the tenderness and

I was not born in Ukraine. My great grandmother was the last one
in our family who spoke Ukrainian. As an adult, I chose Ukraine as
my mother land, consciously and forever. I also learned Ukrainian
as it is part of my soul.
I believe that people can select their origin and take responsibility
for that decision for their entire life. Nobody has a right to blame
any country for their own misfortune or failure. My mother land
gave me a lot of opportunities and rewarded me with professional
growth.
My Message
I believe that each woman, and especially Ukrainian woman, has
to be proud of herself. We should be grateful for the respectful
environment we live in and exercise our right to keep our freedom,
dignity and personally held values.
You can achieve whatever you wish just by acknowledging who
you are and following your dreams. Self-esteem and dignity are
very important on your way to professional development.

I moved to Vienna and started working at the IAEA after my
retirement. It is an honor for me to share my long-term experience
gathered in Ukraine to help others develop their national safety

I was born and grew up in the city of Lviv in Western Ukraine,

my country was restoring its independence and adopting a new

reinforces cooperation with its partners on various international
platforms. It boasts highly skilled human resources, scientific
achievements, enormous investment opportunities, rich
natural resources and the profound beauty of its cultural
heritage.

My job as a Programme Officer at the Regional Division for
Europe and Central Asia of UNIDO is very dynamic. It entails
daily interactions with representatives from member states,
implementation of technical cooperation projects, funds
mobilization, organization of global forum events and
missions.
My profession provides me with the space for personal growth
and a feeling of accomplishment. My slogan at work is: always

It was my personal encounter with an alumnus of Macalester
College (my alma mater), Koffi Annan, the then UN Secretary-
General, that inspired me to work for the UN. Since then, I
actively pursued my dream and was ultimately recruited by
UNIDO in 2010, after having started my career at the World
Bank.
Today, I am as happy and as motivated as ever to be part
of the UNIDO family, and to deliver on my professional
goals in my role as a Development Finance Officer. On a
daily basis, my work involves promoting, setting-up and
coordinating partnerships between UNIDO, its Member
States and International Financial Institutions, as a way to
collaboratively achieve greater development impacts and
contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals.

Ukraine and I
I was born in the multicultural and colourful city of Odesa,
which is the gateway to the Black Sea in Ukraine. Odesa is a
crossroads of cultures, languages and trade – this makes it
one of the most unique and culturally diverse cities of Ukraine.
Walk down the streets of Odesa and you will experience the
extraordinary blend of traditions, hear the humour-infused
Odesan dialect, be welcomed by warm-hearted local people,
and taste the delicious local cuisine. This is complemented by
the magnificent Black Sea - endless beaches, emerald-colour-
ed city parks and a vibrant region in the background. “Odesa
is the pearl on the shores of the Black Sea!”
Although many of us, including myself, end-up living in differ-
ent corners of the world, we always remain loyal to our city
- Odesa, and to our country - Ukraine!

Ukraine and I
My origin is my source of energy: in-depth Ukrainian culture
and language, inspiring people, diverse and magnificent
nature. In my heart I have forever saved pictures from my
childhood, Ternopil region, the western part of Ukraine:
endless willows and hills covered with gentle wild flowers,
handmade wreaths from enchanting forests full of live
sounds and smells.
Till today, I enjoy expressing the treasure of Ukrainian far-
reaching soul through our passionate music, art, dances and
lyrics.
My Message
As a mother of two girls I believe that for women it is essential
to pay attention to our inner self in order to understand who
we really are and what our purpose of life is:

My strong intention “to change the world through
renewable energy...” gave me a chance to join the UNIDO
board, Department of Energy, ten years ago. Soon I realized
that it was more challenging in practice than I thought.
Nevertheless, I believe in the UN values and admire all of my
colleagues who passionately add, day-by-day, “their drops
to the ocean of change”.
I particularly appreciate the learning process in this
multi-cultural environment by exploring new approaches,
generating extraordinary ideas and going beyond my
limitations.
Through my career, I have realized the importance of
balancing my professional and personal relationships,
planning properly the necessary time and energy, and
focusing on truly important things.

Ukraine and I UN and I

My home city, Zaporizhzhya, is located in the eastern
part of Ukraine. It is not only a hub for industry, it is also
full of inspired and creative people, talented artists, and
strong athletes. In addition, the immense history of the
Zaporizhzhya region that is connected with the Cossacks and
Khortytsya Island cannot be left out.
“Production units” and “resources” can never be referred to
as the main parameters contributing to the development of
the city. But rather these are the people, their dreams and
lives, their work and consciousness.
Work at the UN has been one of the most important
experiences of my life. Involvement in different projects at
the IAEA showed me that a large number of international
experts are making huge efforts to prevent cancer and
improve the effectiveness of its treatment around the globe.
The scale of the projects and the extent of the people’s
knowledge here are truly astounding. Their ability to
define complex relationships in full detail and link them to
their professional experience has continually generated
successful projects. It has an enormous practical and
scientific influence on the development of medicine
worldwide.

My Message

I believe that we shall not stop developing ourselves and

gaining more knowledge. The world is very large and small at
the same time. Therefore, even imperceptible actions are of
enormous importance in general. Faith not only in ourselves,
but in others too, is a crucial helper in the development of
ideas, people and society. “Learn. Think. Live.”
To make ourselves stronger, we should leave our comfort
zone more often. It is a very effective practice to keep us fit,
recharge with new energy and expand the horizon of our
thoughts.

I admire the UN for its values and immense will to make our
world better. With my passion for diplomacy and a strong
desire to do something truly meaningful, I have always
known that the UN is my place to be. Committing to the UN
every day makes me feel empowered and gives me great
hope that everything is possible.
I am extremely happy to be part of the UN family, and it is
an incredible honor to work with like-minded people from
all over the world. I am also very thankful to the UN for
bringing amazing people into my life who are making my UN

Ukraine, my homeland, is one of the most wonderful
countries in the world. It reminds me of a young, beautiful

I was born and raised in Kyiv, and for me there is nothing
quite like wandering around the hills along the Dnipro River,
enjoying the panoramic views over my beautiful city. No
matter which season or weather, Ukrainian scenery is always
breathtaking. In spring, Ukraine shows its neatness with
chestnut blossoms, autumn brings golden richness that
complements the magnificent domes of the old churches,
winter is usually filled with snow, bringing something
magical to everything around, and summer smells like
flowers.
