until 1979
• Impact – containment is proved successful as
the islands remain apart of Taiwan and the
US-China are able to negotiate a settlement

• Relations with USSR – US is more willing to
seek détente
• Détente – increased cooperation between
the US and USSR
• Ex. 1972 - SALT
• Relations with China – leads to the Sino-US
rapprochement
• Ex. 1972 – Nixon visits China
• Military – the US will no longer send US
soldiers to contain communism, but will
provide military assistance
• President Carter supplied regional powers (ex.
Brazil, Turkey, South Africa, Iran, Indonesia)
with aid and training to contain communism
• Domino Theory did not happen in Asia as Laos
and Cambodia became communist, but no
where else
