Introduction

• The new level 6 (MC-L6…) is an update of the

old level 5 (C1-L5…). The level of material in the
old L5 is the same as the new L6. The average
age of the student is 10-12.
• We strongly encourage you to review the lesson
before class so you are adequately prepared to
teach the material.
• The Common Core State Standard equivalent
for level 6 is between grades 2-3.
• As level 6 is a higher level, the student will
transition from learning to read to reading to
learn.
• The slides on the right, from a level 6 lesson,
exemplify this point by extending the use of
higher level vocabulary.

Unit Breakdown
• The breakdown of each unit is seen below. Lessons
1-4 and 7-10 present new material which includes
new content and a new reader (short reading piece).
• Lessons 5 and 11 are review which includes a reading
piece covering a variety of themes addressed in the unit.
• As with the rest of major course lessons 6 and 12 are
assessment classes.
• The final project is first shown in lesson 5, assigned in
lesson 6, the student is reminded in lesson 11 and
presents in lesson 12.

Lesson Breakdown
• A difference with level 6 however, is that
lessons 5 and 11 of each unit are review and
no new material is covered.
• Differences regarding conventions and
spelling will be discussed later.
• Lessons with project slides will have more
slides to accommodate the project.

Differences between level 6 and other levels

Convention

• The grammar focus is on conventional use.

• Grammar is the structure of a language while
conventions are mechanics, usage, and sentence
formation.
• Mechanics includes spelling, punctuation,
capitalization and paragraphs.
• Usage includes word order, conjugation, subject-
verb agreement and register.
• Sentence formation refers to how sentences are
structured naturally, and how phrases and clauses
are used to make sentences.
• To extend material have the student tell the rule to
the teacher or give an example of their own.
• When teaching this level is it necessary to be
aware of and know basic grammar rules.

Differences between level 6 and other levels

Spelling and Academic vocabulary

• Spelling replaces high-frequency words.

• Have the student spell vocabulary words.
• Student gains morphemic understanding
(the ability to break words into smaller
constituent parts and also to guess word
meaning from context).
• A new addition to level 6 is academic
vocabulary.
• Academic words are important to
understanding and analyzing the reading, can
be used across different units, and often have
several meanings; a common one and a
specialized, academic
meaning.

Age appropriate techniques

• When teaching level 6 the style and manner

of teaching is quite different from
lower levels.
• Changing your speaking speed, use of words
and overall interaction will be appropriate
at this level.
• Teaching correct grammar and pronunciation
is essential.
• If the student makes a mistake you can catch
the mistake, correct the student and have
the student repeat the correct grammar or
pronunciation.

Props and TPR

• The props, rewards and TPR that may be used

for lower level students will most likely not be
useful for engaging students at this level.
• Using props at this level can be more for fun
and to enliven the classroom rather than as a
learning tool.
• Also, using more realia or photos can be more
helpful in engaging students and extending
material.
• Using TPR for teaching is not as essential, but
it can still be used as a means of gesturing
to reinforce learning.
• Using hand gestures or ‘talking with your hands’
is tied to cognition and speech so this can be a
helpful learning tool.

Simplifying material
(If the lesson is too difficult for the student)

• Underline sentences with key information and

have the student only read those sentences.
• For comprehension questions provide the
student with key words to answer or go back
to the reader and guide the student to answer
using hints.
• For vocabulary, have the student read simple
sentences and guide the student in reading
longer sentences.
• For practice slides demonstrate 1-2 questions
and ask the student to follow or lead the student
to complete the questions.
• If there is extra time review difficult material.
• If the student does have difficulty completing
the material please leave a comment about that
in the feedback for the parents.
• In the picture on the right the teacher is alternating
reading with the student by spinning for who will
read next.

Extending material
(If the lesson is too easy for the student)

• You may find that your student’s level is above

the level of the lesson.
• Most lessons contain about 24 slides which
will turn out to be about a minute per slide.
• If you feel that the lesson is moving too
quickly it may be necessary to extend the
material.
• This level uses lots of real-life pictures. These
are a great tool to use when asking more
advanced questions.
• The blank slide at the end of the lesson is also a
valuable tool to use in extending material.
• If you do use the blank slide it is important
to ensure the activity or game is level
and age appropriate.

Increasing student interactivity

Rewards

• As with lower level students, maintaining an

energetic persona is important in engaging
with the student.
• Along with rewards, positive correction,
encouragement and praise are always
useful tools for increasing student engagement.
• At this level using sincere and honest praise will
encourage the student more.
• Directly rewarding the student by writing their
name on your reward system can create
a stronger and more positive reaction from
the student.
• Rewards are always helpful in encouraging
the student. However, it will make learning
more fun for your student if your reward
reflects the student’s age and maturity.
• Making the reward more interactive will
also encourage the student more.

Teaching vocabulary

• Like the other levels you should help to lead the

student in reading the vocabulary.
• If you choose to break the word down into
syllables for pronunciation please ensure
you teach the correct number and location
of the syllables.
• Furthermore, when breaking the difficult word
into syllables, separating each syllable and saying
the constituent parts of the word slowly will allow
the student to repeat the word correctly.
• In order to expand the material and make
the material more interesting you can use
the picture to reinforce learning by engaging
in short free talk.
• It can also be helpful to have the student use
the word in a sentence of their own and ask
the student the tense of the sample sentence.
TM
C 大米教育科技香港有限公司

Reading with the student

• As students in this level are quite high level having

the student read the material will help expand
their learning.
• If they don’t know the meaning of a word,
encourage them to guess the meaning
from context.
• You can also expand by asking the meaning
of certain words you think they may not know.
• Often, if the student mispronounces a word, after
they repeat the correct pronunciation you can test
their knowledge by asking the meaning of the word.
• If they have difficulty pronouncing words you
can underline them as they read and review
the pronunciation after the student has completed
reading the passage.
• This technique will reduce interrupting the student
and create a smoother learning flow.
TM
C 大米教育科技香港有限公司

Higher order thinking

• As students move from learning to read

to reading to learn challenging them
with more difficult comprehension questions
will become the norm.
• If you find the student can answer the questions
with ease you can ask your own more advanced
questions to challenge the student and
encourage higher level thinking.
• The main difference between level 6 and lower
levels is that level 6 students are more advanced.
• Therefore, please try to challenge the students and
encourage higher order thinking.
TM
C 大米教育科技香港有限公司

Free talk

• Free talk is another area where material

can be extended or simplified depending
on the student.
• If the student feels shy about expressing
their answer feel free to give your own
answer and again ask the student what
they think about the question.
• You may feel it necessary and appropriate
to expand upon these questions with questions
of your own.
• Using open-ended questions can further
engage the student, make learning fun and
extend material according to the student’s
interests.
• Encourage student to always answer in complete
sentences when speaking.
