LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson students will be able to:
1. Identify that the color wheel is made up of primary and secondary colors which can
be split up into warm and cool colors.
2. Apply the knowledge of colors to create artwork which uses the different colors to
represent the ideas of warm and cool colors.
3. Use painting as their technique of exploring ideas and concepts about color.
Color Wheel Art 1) Show them the exemplar and ask a few questions.
Project “What materials do you think I used?” Where are
the cool colors?” “Where are the warm colors?”
2) Tell them that we will be starting this art project
today. Hand out a piece of paper to each student as
well as some circles for them to use to trace. Have
them work in partners and help each other with the
tracing process. Have them place the circle in the
middle of their paper and trace around it with the
pencil. 10 min
3) One side of the page/circle will be the sun and the
other will be the moon. Guide students in drawing
the moon outline in the circle to split it in half. Have
them draw two eyes on either side of the circle and
a smile that extends to both sides. On the sun side
of the paper have students draw diagonal lines from
the circle to the edge of the paper. On the moon
side, have the students draw squiggly lines from the
circle to edge of the paper. Have them draw
different designs in each section created, these
include circles, triangles, stars, moons, or anything
else they would like to draw.
4) For the next class, or if there is time, have them
trace over all the lines in black crayon. Have them
paint their project, do one side at a time (all the
warm colors, or all the cool colors) to not mix too
many colors. Tell them to paint yellow first then
orange, red, blue, green, purple.
Conclusion Time
• Have them gather all the materials and put them away. Make sure their
names are on their projects and collect them all.
5 min
• Have the students line up at the door, silently and transition back to
class.
Assessment
• Visual observations of students work and effort- formative
• Taking in of the projects to see where the students are and if they are following the
different outcomes- formative
