The Eiffel Tower is an iron lattice tower located on the Champ de Mars in Paris. Built in 1889, it has become
both a global icon of France and one of the most recognizable structures in the world. The tower is the tallest
building in Paris and the most-visited paid monument in the world; millions of people ascend it every year.
Named for its designer, engineer Gustave Eiffel, the tower was built as the entrance arch to the 1889 World’s
Fair.
The tower stands 324 meters (1,063 ft) tall, about the same height as an 81-story building. Upon its
completion, it surpassed the Washington Monument to assume the title of tallest man-made structure in the
world, a title it held for 41 years, until the Chrysler Building in New York City was built in 1930; however,
due to the addition in 1957 of the antenna, the tower is now taller than the Chrysler Building. Not including
broadcast antennas, it is the second-tallest structure in France after the 2004 Millau Viaduct.
The tower has three levels for visitors. Tickets can be purchased to ascend, by stairs or lift, to the first and
second levels. The walk to the first level is over 300 steps, as is the walk from the first to the second level.
The third and highest level is accessible only by elevator. Both the first and second levels feature restaurants.
The tower has become the most prominent symbol of both Paris and France, often in the establishing shot of
films set in the city.

Light and sound is found everywhere. Light and sound waves travel from place to place and can be seen and
heard. Light is visible to the human eye and is responsible for the sense of sight. It is a form of energy we can see
when it is reflected off the surface of an object.
Light waves travel through the air from place to place and do not carry matter. Light is believed to travel faster
than anything in the universe. It travels at a speed of 186,000 miles per second. Light is unable to travel through
solids, but it can travel through liquids and gases.
There are two properties of light. The first property of light is called reflection. Reflection is when light
bounces off a surface which then allows the object to be visible to the eye. For example, when the moon is seen in
the sky, it is because the light from the sun reflects off the surface of the moon. A light ray comes off a surface at
an equal angle to the angle at which it struck the surface.
The second property of light is called refraction. Refraction is when a ray of light passes from a transparent
medium to another transparent medium such as from air to water, it changes speed and the way it bends.
For example, when a pencil is placed into a glass of water, the pencil will seem like it is broken into two
pieces. Because the light is traveling through the water, there is refraction, and the light bends causing the pencil
to look like it is in two pieces. Another example of refraction is the use of eyeglasses to improve a person's vision.
Using a glass that is curved at a certain angle the vision of a person is corrected by the way light is refracted in the
eye.

Do you know what the largest lizard is? This lizard is called komodo. It lives in the scrub and woodland of a
few Indonesian islands
Komodo dragon is the world’s heaviest lizard, weighing 150 pounds or more. The largest Komodo ever
measured was more than 10 feet (3 meters) long and weighed 366 pounds (166 kg) but the average size of
komodo in the wild is about 8 feet (2.5 meters) long and 200 pounds (91 kg).
Komodo has gray scaly skin, a pointed snout, powerful limbs and a muscular tail. They use their keen sense
of smell to locate decaying animal remains from several miles away. They also hunt other lizards as well as
large mammals and are sometimes cannibalistic.
The Komodo dragon’s teeth are almost completely covered by its gums. When it feeds, the gums bleed,
creating an ideal culture for virulent bacteria. The bacteria that lives in the Komodo dragon’s saliva causes
septicemia, or blood poisoning in its victims. A dragon will bite its prey, and then follow it until the animal is
too weak to carry on.
44. The Komodo Dragon uses its ... to recognize the decaying animals.
A. sense of smell
B. virulent bacteria
C. sense of hearing
D. poisonous gums
Once upon a time there lived a group of mice under a tree in peace. However, a group of elephants crossing
the jungle unknowingly destroyed the homes of all the rats. Many of them were even crushed to death.
Then the king of the rats decided to approach the elephant's chief and request him to guide his herd through
another route. On hearing the sad story, the elephant's king apologized and agreed to take another route. And
so the lives of the rats were saved.
One day elephant-hunters came to the jungle and trapped a group of elephants in huge nets. Then the
elephant king suddenly remembered the king of the rats. He called one of the elephants of his herd, which
had not been trapped, to go seek help from the king and told him about the trapped elephants.
The rat's king immediately took his entire group of rats and they cut open the nets which had trapped the
elephant's herd. The elephant herd was totally set free. They danced with joy and thank the rats.
