ASSIGNMENT 1: TWO-WAY FLOOR SLABS

Calculate the reinforcement of an equivalent frame from the underground parking floor slab of
a building. The floor slab is a two-way waffle one and has the plan view as represented in the
attached CAD file.

The actions to take into account are the slab self-weight, which consists of a waffle one with
lost lightening blocks made of mortar, pavement with a weight of 1.5 kN/m2, and an overload
corresponding to a ground story intended for a commercial local open to the public, according
to CTE.

The self-weight of the waffle slab can be estimated according to Appendix C of the SE-AE
document of the CTE.

The width of the ribs is 12 cm as a consequence of the most strict fire requirements which
must be adopted in an underground parking. Therefore, inter-axis distance between ribs is of
82 cm.

The exposition class is IIa and the concrete type is HA30. The steel reinforcement is B500S.

The slab must be designed according to the prescriptions of the design code for both Service
Limit States (SLS) and Ultimate Limit States (ULS).

Taking into account the characteristics of the structure it is possible to apply the direct method
to obtain the moments and forces in the slab.

Each student will develop the design of one of the equivalent frames defined by a determined
alignment of pillars (numbered in the plan view provided in the CAD file). The assigned frame
and pillar are indicated in a companion file.

QUESTIONS:

1.- Check if the direct method can be applied.

2.- Define the appropriate depth of the slab so that the deflections do not need to be checked.

3.- Define the geometry and the loads of the equivalent frame

4.- Determine the design moment laws of the equivalent frame

5.- Calculate the reinforcement of the central strip or support strip assigned to you
6.- Draw the reinforcement in elevation view. Define the necessary reinforcement for positive
and negative bending, the shear reinforcement if necessary and the mesh reinforcement in the
compression layer

7.- Check the resistance of the slab to punching over the pillar assigned to you and,
if necessary, compute the required punching reinforcement. In order to estimate the
load applied on each pillar it will be acceptable to apply a simple geometric
distribution. It can be assumed that in the solid slab, the ratio of area of distributed
longitudinal negative reinforcement to gross concrete area perpendicular to that
reinforcement is ρl = 0.0045.
