CR 1.

3 Engineering Activates

1) I joined the construction project two years after its commencement, at a stage when the
construction activities were more into civil (Structural) works and the design review had
been in the final stage. The electrical works had barely started at this phase. During the
day shift working hours assigned to me to start handling the Electrical and Low voltage
works, I got ample opportunities to study all approved design drawings, specification and
related contract documents.

. lately after two years of construction start date, when I joined the project, reviewing of
design drawing were in last stage and the construction activities at site were more into civil
(structural) works, rather electrical works was not much started. I was appointed for Day shift
where I have to handle both Electrical and Low voltage works. It was a good time for me to
study all approved design drawings, specification and other contract documents.

2) My engineering career commenced with a challenge of reviewing and approving each

submittal of the contractor within four days period. The submittals comprised Light
Fixtures, UPS Systems, Bus Ducts, Cables, Electrical Panels and Passive Components
that included Cat6A Cables, Patch Panels, Fire Alarm System, AV systems etc.. During
those days, every day, I used to receive 8 to 10 submittals of different electrical materials
and accomplished my review goals by working late hours.

each I started my the work by reviewing material submittals submitted by contractor for
approval, major items like light fixtures, UPS systems, bus ducts , cables ,Electrical Panels,
Passive Components like Cat6A Cables, Patch Panels, Fire Alarm System, AV
systems..Etc.The most challenging part for me in this project was that the maximum time
period to review each submittal was 4 days as the project nature was fast track and every day
I used to receive 8 to 10 submittals of different electrical materials. I used to accomplish
reviewing by working late hours.

Milestones of Achievements:

 I overcame an issue during the light fixture approval phase when the Medical
Team objected to the requirement that all the patient room were to be fixed
with Down Lights as per the Design Drawing requirement, on grounds that
the lowered height of the False Ceiling from 3 Meter to 2.3 meter would
adversely affect eyes of the patients who were to be carried on stretches.
My proposal during a meeting involving the Light Fixture Vendor, Contractor
and the Architect was to use Wall Washer Fixtures instead of Down Lights,
This was readily accepted by the Architect and finally by the Contractor and
the Supplier, against sanctioning of 2 % increase in the Package Price. In
order to maintain 150 lux in the corridor, I procured lux level calculation from
them.
 During light fixtures approval, as per design drawings and specification all
patient room corridors lights were down lights whereas medical team refused
using downlights as it will affect the patients eyes carrying on stretchers as
the false ceiling height was just 2.3mts ( as per design it was 3 mts changed
to 2.3 mts during construction phase),I conducted meeting with light fixture
supplier, contractor and architects and proposed idea of wall washer fixtures
instead of downlight where architect team agreed the idea ,whereas
contractor and supplier said will check the budget and if it is within their limit
will change and finally with 2 % increase to their package the changes were
approved. I even asked to submit lux level calculation in corridors in order to
maintain 150 lux.
 As the Maximum Temperature Withstand capacity is 40°C for most of the
Light Fixtures and bearing in mind that Kuwait temperature reaches even
55°C , I pay more attention to Temperature Tolerance Factor, and check the
Wattage, Lumens, Color Temperature, CRI & Ballast Power factors as well,
while giving approval for light fixtures. If approval is sought for any alternate
light fixtures other than what are specified, I make sure the those fixtures
meet the lux level in that particular area by making use of dialux software.
 While approving light fixtures I keep an eye on wattage, lumens, color
temperature, CRI, ballast power factor and most important temperature
tolerances as most of manufacturer maximum temperature withstand is 40°C
but in Kuwait temperatures reaches 55°C.If there are any alternate light
fixtures than specified, I make sure the alternate light fixtures meet the lux
level in that particular area by using dialux software.

 While approving UPS system I found that the contractor has submitted
battery calculations based on connected load rather than UPS maximum
capacity and also the selection of batteries were done at 20°C .I rejected the
submittal and asked to resubmit battery calculation by considering all the
deration factors and with maximum UPS capacity.
 I found that during projectors approval in small meeting rooms which has
capacity of 6 people ,the Audio Visual contractor has considered long throw
projector with retractable lift as per specifications and approved design but as
per site condition the ceiling height was changed from 3 mts to 2.3 mts which
will affect the image view on screen .So I instructed the contractor to change
projectors in small meeting rooms to ulta short throw type with same image
brightness (lumens).
3) I reviewed shop drawings, builders work drawings, composite drawings submitted by
contractor to ensure the drawings are in compliance with design drawings, site
requirements , ministerial regulations like MEW(Ministry of Electricity and
Water),KFD(Kuwait Fire Department),and other standards IEC,BSI,NFPA,ANSI/TIA and
recommend approval or disapproval.
4) Due to lack of coordination between electrical and plumbing contractors at site, plumbing
contractor installed plumbing pipes in many routes firstly prior to busducts installation and
electrical contractor raised a concern and claimed variation for new route changes to client. I
reviewed the drawing submitted by contractor and found that many routes were chose
lengthier in order to get maximum variation. I have rerouted bus ducts as per actual site
conditions without changing the procured busduct lengths so that voltage drop and cost remain
same and where ever it was not possible to change the route I instructed contractor to install
attic slab with proper slope to avoid water leakage onto bus ducts rather than increasing
lengths and ampacity .
5) As per KFD regulations all fire exit doors shall be kept open/unlocked all the time. However
infant protection system need security for protecting new born babies, all doors related to
special areas including fire exit doors shall be secured. Hence I had meeting with KFD
engineers and explained them about the importance of door lock in compliance with NFPA101
standards by having delayed egress for fire exit doors, and thereby KFD permitted.
6) I have reviewed Engineering calculations submitted along with shopdrawings, material
submittals like Cable sizing, Voltage drop ,UPS sizing, Lux level ,short circuit current analysis,
load analysis, Single line diagrams, Motor control center (MCC) panels sizing and type of
starters selection, all panels breaker sizing’s, Testing and commission reports.
7) I have witnessed fluke test for structured cabling and found many of cables (cat 6a) were
exceeding 90 mts violating specification’s and TIA 568 standards and instructed contractor to
change the route or to replace with fiber.
8) I have witnessed busduct testing at site installation where contractor was only proceeding with
torque test without doing meggering.I insisted contractor’s engineer to do megger test and
guided him the procedure to install busduct that each length of busduct shall be meggered
before and after jointing. Finally torque tests were done to meet manufacturing
recommendation which was 70 N-m and megger test by applying 1000 v and insulation
resistance were recorded and at last connecting full load thermal scanning was done to check
hotspots.
9) During the process of delivery of transformers which was scope of Ministry of Electricity and
water (MEW), said that they are in shortage of 23 No’s of 1600 KVA transformers out of total
76 No’s and they will provide 1250 KVA instead. I was asked by project director to solve this
issue ,then I started collecting actual loads from Medical,HVAC and other trades and made a
load analysis using Microsoft excel for maximum demand load (MDL) per transformer and
found that out of 23 / 6No’s of transformers loads were greater than 1250KVA , finally after
preparing as new single line drawing agreed with MEW to deliver 17 No’s of 1250 KVA and
other 6 still to be remain 1600 KVA rating.
10) I control/manage inspectors and guide them for the supervision activities. I monitor and
record all the construction activities at site through inspectors and maintain the records of all
Inspection requests submitted by contractor and prepare weekly progress reports and submit to
higher management to cross check actual progress versus contractor claimed progress and
basline, and also I recommend the acceptable completed progress percentages of all electrical
activities to the client for Contractor’s Monthly Payment Applications
11) I inspect the material delivered to site along with my inspector’s team to verify the delivered
materials are as per approved material submittal / samples and approve or disapprove material
inspection reports.
12) I inspect site daily/weekly to check if the electrical works are installed as per approved shop
drawing/method of installation/ministerial regulations/NFPA. The following are few of my findings at
site
 Many times I found power sockets installed just 0.5 mts away from sink which
is against MEW regulations which calls for atleast 2mts away from sink. I
raised Job site instruction (JSI) to change the socket location or if changing is
not possible as per site condition asked to change water proof socket with IP
45.
 I found some of the cables in cable tray are grouped touching each other, I
raise the JSI to maintain distance between cables as 2x diameter of biggest
cable in cable tray or else to resize the cables considering grouping factor.
 I found lightning protection cable passing through a shaft was 700 mm away
from HVACduct, whereas manufacturer recommendation was to maintain
atleast 2mts away from any services, hence raised a JSI to route it through
external surface of building.
 During my site inspection I found that electrical contractor has forgot to put
UPVC sleeves under road crossings for street lights and civil contractor has
proceeded with road concrete pouring. I raised a NCR (non conformance
report) for the issue and brought notice to higher managements.
13) I have lead the snagging procedure through inspectors and other shifts engineers and
prepare outstanding works/Snag list and issued to contractor for rectification.
14) At present stage all electrical work installations like PVC/EMT conduting, wiring, cable tray
installation ,cable terminations, copper tape installation & earth pits for earthing, wiring
devices installation, Light fixtures installations, Electrical panel installations ,Substations
equipments and its terminations, termination of Medical,HVAC and other equipment’s are
done. For Low voltage structure cabling ,Passive components installations like patch
panels, network racks ,CCTV installations,Firealarm devices and panels are been
completed which is approximately 85 % of electrical and low voltage works. Final
commissioning of low voltage equipments and connecting whole electrical and low
voltage network to Main control center for integration and monitoring is pending which is
expected to finish by March 2019.Low voltage contractor works in only one shift, as the
result the final commissioning work has been delayed.
