gram ended a business relation-
ship with a company Tuesday af-
ter that company’s president was
identified as someone charged
with a sex crime against chil-
dren.
Bulldog Sports Properties
and Gulf Relay LLC severed ties
after Gulf Relay was the primary
sponsor of MSU’s Military Ap-
preciation game against Arkan-
sas on Saturday. The president
of Gulf Relay, Douglas Hind-
man, was arrested by the Hinds
County Sheriff’s Office in 2006
during an investigation into
online sex predators. He was
charged with child exploitation,
a crime that would have includ-
ed a penalty of registering as a
sex offender.
Hindman pleaded guilty to
cyberstalking — a charge that
has not landed him on the Mis-
sissippi Sex Offender Registry
— and was later pardoned by
former Governor Haley Barbo-

have small families and don’t want
to cook a big fancy Thanksgiving
for just three people,” she added. “A
lot of the guests that come are small
guests like that — groups of three
or four that maybe don’t want to do
an elaborate meal at home but they
still want to have all of the bells and
whistles, and this is a great way for
them to do that.”

65-year-old Betty Jones, one
of two victims, along with
81-year-old Kathryn Crigler,
in the infamous 1990 Labor
Day murders. She was work-
ing in her yard one day when
Lott approached her.
“I look up and see this
burly-looking man,” she said.
“He started talking and he
didn’t stop for 30 minutes. He
vowed at that point that he
was taking over that case and
he was going to do whatever
it took to solve it. I believed
him.”
Years later, Lott’s promise
came through, as SPD ar-

breakthrough for the nearly

she would attend a “public hanging”
if the supporter invited her.
Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith’s re-
mark was caught on video that was
released last week. It has brought
my comments, I certainly apologize.
There was no ill will, no intent what-
soever in my statement,” Hyde-Smith
said Tuesday during a televised de-
bate with Democrat Mike Espy.
The apology was a new approach
for Hyde-Smith, who repeatedly re-
fused to answer questions about the
hanging comment at a news confer-
ence Nov. 12, the day after the pub-
lisher of a liberal-leaning news site
posted the video on Facebook and
Twitter.
The clip shows Hyde-Smith prais-
ing a cattle rancher at a Nov. 2 cam-
paign event in Tupelo by saying: “If
he invited me to a public hanging,
I’d be on the front row.” Shortly af-
ter the video’s release, she said in a
statement that the expression was an
“exaggerated expression of regard”
to ever indicate I had ill will toward
anyone,” Hyde-Smith, a former state
agriculture commissioner, said Tues-
day night. “I’ve never been hurtful
to anyone. I’ve always tried to help
everyone. I also recognize that this
comment was twisted and it was
turned into a weapon to be used
against me, a political weapon used
for nothing but personal and political
gain by my opponent. That’s the type
of politics Mississippians are sick
and tired of.”
Espy responded during the de-
bate: “No one’s twisted your com-
ments because your comments were
live, you know, it came out of your
mouth. I don’t know what’s in your
heart but I know what came out of
your mouth. It went viral in the first
three minutes around the world. And
so it’s caused our state harm.”
The Mississippi Highway Patrol has devel-
oped a description of the vehicle believed to have
been involved in a fatal hit-and-run in Lowndes
County Saturday.
On the MHP Starkville Twitter account, the
vehicle is described as a Chevy Silverado (year
model 1993-2003) or a Chevy Tahoe (1999-2006)
with damage to the front right part of the vehicle.
Dewilliam Zerrell Binion, 18, was killed af-
ter a vehicle hit him on Highway 373, north of
Noblin Road, at about 8:14 p.m., according to a
Mississippi Highway Patrol press release.
Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant said
it appears Binion was walking toward Columbus
Air Force Base and was struck from behind. He
added Binion was a resident of the area where he
was walking.
Binion was pronounced dead after he was
taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Tri-
angle.

ments have made “little
clear progress” recently
in compelling the Taliban
to negotiate a peace deal,
according to a new U.S. as-
sessment Monday that said
military and political signs
point toward continued
stalemate.
“Progress toward peace
remains elusive,” Glenn A.
Fine, the acting Pentagon
inspector general, wrote
in an introduction to a
comprehensive review of
military, political and hu-
manitarian conditions in
Afghanistan during the
July-September period.
These were the final three
months of the 17th year of a
war that began in October
2001.
The report offered little
support for the Trump ad-
ministration’s assertions
that its revised war strat-
egy, announced in Au-
gust 2017, is bringing the
Afghan government and
the Taliban insurgency
closer to peace and recon-
ciliation. When he visited
Kabul in July, Secretary of
State Mike Pompeo said
the strategy “is indeed
working.”

JACKSON — A federal
judge on Tuesday struck
down a Mississippi law
that bans most abortions
after 15 weeks, one of the
most restrictive in the
United States.
U.S. District Judge
Carlton Reeves ruled that
the law “unequivocally”
violates women’s consti-
tutional rights.
“The record is clear:
States may not ban abor-
tions prior to viability,”
Reeves said, citing Su-
preme Court rulings.
The only abortion clin-
ic in Mississippi sued
when Republican Gov.
Phil Bryant signed the
law March 19, and Reeves
issued a temporary re-
straining order the next
day to keep the state from
enforcing the law.
The Mississippi law
and the responding law-
suit set up a confronta-
tion sought by abortion
opponents, who are hop-
ing federal courts will
ultimately prohibit abor-
tions before a fetus is via-
ble outside the womb, the
dividing line that the U.S.
Supreme Court set in its
1973 ruling saying that
women have the right to
terminate pregnancies.
An Iowa law, also chal-
lenged in court, bans
most abortions once a fe-
tal heartbeat is detected.
The Mississippi law
would allow exceptions to
the 15-week ban in cases
of medical emergency or
severe fetal abnormality.
Doctors found in viola-
tion of the ban would face
mandatory suspension or
revocation of their medi-
cal license.
A national abor-
tion-rights group, the
Center for Reproductive
Rights, helped represent
the Mississippi clinic.

means that women in Mis-
sissippi will maintain the
ability to make their own
decisions about whether

Army soldier has been arrested in the
shooting death of another soldier in Col-
orado.
Twenty-year-old Pfc. Isaiah Towns of
Batesville, Mississippi, was being held
on suspicion of second-degree murder
in the Saturday death of Spc. Shakir D.
Cook-Troynel.
The Colorado Springs Gazette re-
ports Towns was being held in lieu of
$100,000 bail. Jail records didn’t indicate
whether he had an attorney who could
speak on his behalf.
Citing a court document, KRDO-TV
reports Towns told police he found his
wife and Cook-Troynel together in a bed-
room. Towns told officers he and his wife
struggled, and Towns’ pistol discharged,
striking Cook-Troynel.
The 23-year-old Cook-Troynel was
from Homestead, Florida.

of the assets of individuals with disabilities.
I strongly support Carrie Jourdan for Lowndes
County Chancery Judge because she has proven
herself to be a champion for justice. During my
tenure at Palmer Home for Children I personally
witnessed her tireless legal advocacy for vulner-
able children, the mentally ill, and those who had
been wrongfully incarcerated. Carrie Jourdan
exhibits the courage and compassion necessary
to be the Lowndes County Chancery Judge. That

pany-wide because most
people are going out for
dinner or having it catered
on Thanksgiving Day.”
Elmore has worked at
various Cracker Barrel
locations for the last 18
years, though this will
be his first in Columbus.
He said the atmosphere
and the work makes him
feel as though he’s giving
back to customers.
“I think it’s a way of giv-
ing back,” he said. “...It’s a
way for people that don’t
have time to get out there
and cook a full-course
meal to just come in and
just let somebody else do
all the cooking and take
care of the rest. For the
last 18 years for me, it’s
been that way and it gets
busier and busier every
year, but Cracker Barrel
has always been the place
of choice for the people
that (were) not cooking
the big meals at home.”

Holmes’ personality, point guard play proves perfect fit for Bulldogs

Holmes’ greeting is another
sign things are different this
season for the Mississippi State
women’s basketball team.
The senior point guard didn’t
always used to enter the media
room at Humphrey Coliseum
with a bubbly disposition and
ask everyone how they were do-
ing. Earlier in her MSU career,
Holmes was more reserved
and reluctant to speak up, even
though she played a key role as
backup point guard to Morgan
William.
But Holmes’ welcome Tues-
day to those on hand for the
MSU women’s basketball media
availability is another sign that
things will re-
main consistent
even if they are
a little different.
That’s because
Holmes offered a
similar greeting
the last time she

Holmes and MSU will try
to build on that start at 2 p.m.
Wednesday when they play host
to Furman at Humphrey Colise-
um.
Holmes is averaging 7.5
points per game in 25.3 min-
utes per game, which is sec-
ond on the team. Her 4-to-1
assist-to-turnover ratio is some-
thing she takes pride in because
it has been stressed to her since
she arrived in Starkville.
Last season, MSU’s ability
to share the ball and protect
it was instrumental in its sec-
ond-straight run to the national
title game. The Bulldogs were
53rd in the nation in assists
(15.3) and third in turnovers
(10.8) last season. Through
four games, they are 12th in
the nation in assists (20.8) and
113th in turnovers (16.1).
Holmes said everybody on
the 2018-19 team can do some-
thing different, so she has to
continue to build relationships
with her teammates to find out
where their “shooting pockets”

STARKVILLE — Mississippi State’s late
offensive woes were its undoing against Ken-
tucky; offensive success throughout buried
Auburn, and complete offensive ineptitude
was to blame for the loss to LSU. Yet, all of
those games have something in common: it
was close at the end of the first quarter, and
because of it the second quarter went relative-
ly well.
If No. 22 MSU (7-4, 3-4 Southeastern Con-
ference) is to win the Egg Bowl 6:30 p.m.
Thursday (ESPN), there is reason to believe
getting off to a strong start can play a big fac-
tor. MSU has outscored its opponents by 102
points in the first half while Ole Miss (5-6, 1-6
SEC) has been outscored by 25 points in the
same stretch.
A good bit of MSU’s statistical domi-
nance in first half is influenced by domi-
nating Stephen F. Austin (35-3 at halftime),
Louisiana-Lafayette (21 unanswered sec-
ond-quarter points) and Louisiana Tech
(31-3 at halftime). Against SEC competition,
MSU has a scoring margin of 19-27 in the
first quarter, with 14 of those points allowed

Truth be told, No. 22 MSU (7-

Goodman ended his senior season
unsure of if he would have a chance
to live out this dream.
In between his junior and senior
seasons, he and his father Tony took
a tour. They travelled around, going
to camps and visiting colleges. At
some point in that tour, Tony want-
ed to know what Scott was looking
for.
“I asked him, ‘What’s the dream
school?’ to get it and go from there.
The dream was to play in-state, play
in the SEC, to represent his home
state,” Tony Goodman told The Dis-
patch.
Then there was more waiting.
Goodman played his senior season,
and played it well — with no in-state
scholarship offer to show for it. Oth-
er options looked like his only op-
tion until he walked off the practice
field at the Mississippi-Alabama
All-Star game, when MSU senior
special teams advisor Chris Boniol
called and offered a preferred walk-
on spot.
“I think when the Mississippi
State offer came along, even if it
wasn’t a scholarship offer, that was
a big deal, to kick in the SEC,” Tony
Goodman said.
From there, Scott Goodman
spent most of December on the
phone with MSU’s then-special
teams coordinator Scott Fountain;
Fountain took the same job at Geor-
gia after National Signing Day. Tony
Goodman estimates his son spent
almost every day on the phone with
Fountain, possibly all the way up to
the day he signed; he was also field-
ing interest from other schools.
Army and UMass wanted the
Goodmans to come for a visit, but
Tony thinks Scott found it too hard
to go that far from home. The Good-
mans were serious about interest
from Central Arkansas, but head
coach Steve Campbell leaving for
the South Alabama job made that
prospect complicated.
In the end, Boniol is a big reason
why Goodman is at MSU.
“Chris Boniol was a big factor
in that also, his knowledge and his
ability to develop him as a kicker,”
Tony Goodman said. “I always talk-
ed to the special teams coaches and
the coaches that recruited him; I al-
ways asked what their background
was in kicking and I had coaches
tell me, ‘I don’t have any.’ A good
many special teams coaches had no
kicking experience, especially at
the small schools.
“I even had a coach tell me, ‘If he
struggles kicking, I can’t help him,
but I don’t have a problem with you
calling a kicking coach and getting
help from him.’ That’s not really
what I want to hear as a parent.”
Through Boniol, MSU and Scott
Goodman are both getting more
than they wanted out of 2018. MSU
gets a quality kickoff man and three
more years of him; Goodman gets
to live his dream and play in the
most important game of his life on

The Yellow Jackets have won
four straight, including last week’s
30-27 overtime victory over Virgin-
ia. But the streak that is the hot top-
ic this week is Georgia Tech’s two
straight wins in Athens — a 30-24
overtime win in 2014 and a 28-27
thriller in 2016.
The Bulldogs were dominant in
last year’s 38-7 win at Georgia Tech,
but the Yellow Jackets are hoping to
add to their recent success in Ath-
ens, especially when they can spoil
Georgia’s national championship
dream.
“Yeah, that would be a huge
deal,” said left guard Parker Braun.
“You never want to tear another
team down, but if we beat them it’s
better for us, you know what I’m
saying. I think we have an opportu-
nity to do that.”
South Carolina at Clemson
Just a few years ago, the Game-
cocks had the unquestioned up-
per-hand on the rivalry and in re-
cruiting in the Palmetto State.
South Carolina won five straight
games over Clemson (11-0, No. 2
CFP) from 2009-13 featuring such
standouts and NFL draft picks as
defensive end Jadeveon Clowney,
cornerback Stephon Gilmore and
wide receiver Alshon Jeffery. But it
has been the Tigers who’ve had the
upper hand — and in a dominant
way — over the past four seasons.
The Tigers have won three Atlan-
tic Coast Conference titles, played
in three College Football Playoffs
and won the national championship
in 2016 while the Gamecocks pro-
gram fell apart. South Carolina has
gradually built things back under
third-year coach Will Muschamp,
although their first trip to Clemson
in 2016 was a 56-7 drubbing that
stuck with players ever since.
Linebacker T.J. Brunson, the
Gamecocks leading tackler, thinks
Muschamp has started infusing
more talent into the program.
Auburn at Alabama
The Tigers know all too well that
even an Iron Bowl upset might not
keep the Tide (11-0, No. 1 CFP)
from a national title shot. The Ti-
gers won 26-14 last season to earn
a spot in the SEC championship
game but Alabama still went on to
not only make the playoffs but win
another national title.
This Auburn team is a bigger un-
derdog after a season in which the
Tigers fell from a No. 8 ranking to
out of the Top 25.
Quarterback Jarrett Stidham in-
sists that unpredictable things can
happen in rivalry games.
“I think every year, regardless
of what the circumstances are for
either team, anything can happen
in this game,” Stidham said. “Rival-
ry games, for whatever reason, are
just like that. Ohio State-Michigan
is kind of another one where any-
thing can happen.
“Everybody here, we’re just very
excited for the opportunity. I mean,
we get to play the No. 1 team in the
country, on the road, everybody
against you. It’s going to be a lot of
fun.”

Top-ranked Duke survives scare from No. 8 Auburn in Maui title game

LAHAINA, Hawaii — Duke
hit Auburn with a flurry of al-
ley-oops, acrobatic drives and
step-back 3-pointers.
The Tigers, unlike the Blue
Devils’ first four opponents,
fought back, going right back at
the top-ranked Blue Devils.
It still wasn’t enough.
Duke withstood its toughest
test of the season so far, outlast-
ing No. 8 Auburn 78-72 Tuesday
night to reach the Maui Invita-
tional title game.
“Big time game. Both teams
played so hard,” Duke coach
Mike Krzyzewski said. “That
was a heck of a win for us. To
play this level of game at this
time of the year is amazing for
us.”
Duke (5-0) came into the
game as the tournament favor-
ite and looked like it would run
Auburn out of the gym after
racing past San Diego State in
the opener.
The Tigers (4-1) clawed back
to pull the Blue Devils within
reach, yet could never get a firm
grip.
Duke answered every Au-
burn challenge, earning a
chance to play No. 3 Gonzaga
or Arizona for the chance at an
unprecedented sixth Maui Invi-
tational title.
Marques Bolden, an upper-
classmen leader among all the
talented freshmen, keyed the
defensive, blocking seven shots
while scoring seven points and
grabbing nine rebounds.
Zion Williamson provided
the wow factor with acrobatic
moves to the basket, finishing
with 13 points and nine re-
bounds.
Jared Harper nearly kept
the Tigers in it singlehandedly
with deep 3-pointers in the sec-
ond half. He had 22 points and
Bryce Brown 16 for Auburn.
“We’re very disappointed
that we weren’t able to take
advantage of the opportunity,”
Auburn coach Bruce Pearl said.
“Our great strength is our bal-
ance and I think when we con-
tinue to become a little bit more
balanced in many ways we’ll
continue to become a better
team.”
The Blue Devils came to
Maui yet to be tested, leaving
fans wondering what they’ll do
next through the first four ooh-
and-ahh-inducing routs.
The Blue Devils express
kept rolling at the Lahaina Civ-
ic Center.
Duke stymied Auburn defen-
sively early, limiting the Tigers
to 4-of-20 shooting while jump-
ing out to a 20-8 lead.
But Tigers would not lay
down that easy. Boosted by a
large contingent of rowdy sup-
porters, they held Duke with-
out a field goal for five minutes,
got out in transition and whit-
tle what seemed like an insur-
mountable lead to six just be-
fore halftime.
Duke tried to run away
with it by scoring the second
half’s first eight points, Auburn
clawed its way back, trimming
what was once a 17-point deficit
to 61-56.
But every time the Tigers
tried to get close, the Blue Dev-
ils had an answer with an al-
ley-oop dunk or a Bolden block.

said to me, “If you don’t have leftovers for sand-

This particular holiday, above all others, seems to
demand leftover turkey. Make mine a simple sand-

tas, casseroles and salads. I especially like the recipe
for “gobblers” in today’s food section, along with some
others that sound tasty.
In light of the recent salmonella scare associated
with raw ground turkey, it’s worth a reminder about
keeping all this food safe for eating.
So, how long can we continue to enjoy most of our
Thanksgiving leftovers? According to foodnetwork.
com, a general rule is to eat up what’s left within four
days. Safety begins by getting those leftovers in the
refrigerator within at least two hours after cooking,
sooner if it’s cooled. Food left out too long can start to
grow harmful bacteria. Choose strong food storage
containers with covers as airtight as possible. If a food
is hot, divide it among several shallow containers to
cool faster.
Try to reheat only what you’ll be serving at one time
rather than heating up the entire portion. It’s safe to
eat it and then restore what you don’t use, but the food
will continue to lose flavor and moisture the more it’s
reheated.
And just like on Thanksgiving Day, use a thermom-

The secret to this applesauce cake is cider and dried apples

APPLESAUCE SNACK CAKE

A
pplesauce cakes don’t
have a singular defi-
nition; they run the
gamut from dense, chunky
fruitcakes to gummy “health”
cakes without much flavor.
We wanted a moist and tender
cake that actually tasted like
apples.
To achieve the loose, rustic
crumb that’s best suited to
a snack cake, we used the
simple quick-bread mixing
method, mixing the wet in-
gredients separately and then
gently adding the dry ingredi-
ents by hand.
The challenge lay in add-
ing more apple flavor. Simply
increasing the applesauce
made for a gummy cake,
and fresh apples added too
much moisture. But two other
sources worked well: apple
cider and dried apples.
When reduced to a syrup,
the apple cider contributed
a pleasing sweetness and a
slight tang without excess
moisture. And dried apples
plumped in the cider while it
was reducing gave our cake
even more apple flavor.
We liked the textural
contrast provided by a simple
sprinkling of spiced granulat-
ed sugar over the cake before
baking. This cake is very
moist, so it’s best to err on
the side of overbaked when
testing its doneness. We
prefer the rich flavor of cider,
but you can substitute apple
juice.
Servings: 9
Start to finish: 1 hour (plus up to 2
hours to cool)
1 cup apple cider
3/4 cup dried apples, cut into 1/2-
inch pieces
1 cup unsweetened applesauce,
room temperature
2/3 cup (4 2/3 ounces) sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
1 1/2 cups (7 1/2 ounces) all-pur-
pose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 large egg, room temperature
1/2 teaspoon salt
8 tablespoons unsalted butter, melt-
ed and cooled
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
n Adjust oven rack to middle
position and heat oven to 325 F.
Make foil sling for 8-inch square
baking pan by folding 2 long sheets
of aluminum foil so each is 8 inches
wide. Lay sheets of foil in pan per-
pendicular to each other, with extra
foil hanging over edges of pan. Push
foil into corners and up sides of pan,
smoothing foil flush to pan.

in small saucepan and simmer over
medium heat until liquid evaporates
and mixture appears dry, about 15
minutes. Let mixture cool complete-
ly, then process with applesauce in
food processor until smooth, 20 to
30 seconds.
n Whisk sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg,
and cloves together in bowl; set
aside 2 tablespoons mixture for
