e all laud tolerance, or at least we should. We believe that
a lack of tolerance among our fellow beings is the root
cause behind many of the conflicts in the world around us.
Good for us. Now that we have benevolently patted ourselves on
our back, perhaps it is time to take a really good look; right under
our noses among the community we live and work in. Do we show
tolerance to those around us? For that matter is tolerance the right
attitude we should be displaying? Is tolerance by its very nature
implying a condescending attitude on our part?
Let us take a look ... Except for the omnipresent hamburgers, piz-
zas, sushi or biryanis what is the extent of our interaction with
cuisines of other communities? How about the arts — music, films,
theater, literature — except for the popular varieties what is our
exposure to them. Have we ever created the opportunity to visit a
concert or cultural festival of another community? It has been said
that a culture is the sum total of all the influences that a region has
undergone, and this region no doubt has undergone quite a few;
but despite the variety of these influences, what has its impact been
on us?
How about the rights of people working for us, or with us? Do we
respect their rights to human rights as enshrined by the UN and
other bodies. When was the last time, or even the first time, that
we actively attempted to propagate tolerance towards other com-
munities; or, at least refrained from stereotyping, including gender-
typing others? How about our assumptions and beliefs about other
nationalities and ethnic groups; have we ever made any attempt to
verify the veracity of these impressions?
