Topic: Roll & Read (Fluency Sentences)

In the last lesson the teach did “Echo Reading” with the
class to practice fluency. This is where the teacher reads a
sentence and then the students repeat what the teacher
read right after the teacher finishes. The do this until the
whole page is read.
The teacher will explain how to do Roll and Read by
modeling the first one. The teacher will first highlight all
long o “oa” sounds pink and all “ow” sounds orange. Then
the teacher will roll the dice. The teacher will next read
the section (the number) he/she’s die landed on.
The students will complete this activity in groups of 3-4
students. Each student will have their own worksheet, but
they may share highlighters and the one big dice. The
students will go around the group and complete the
worksheet. The teacher will be walking around the room
to assist struggling learners.
Independent Practice
Remind students how the
teaching point can be used in
independent writing. (There
should be a link between the
mini lesson and the students’
independent writing lives).
Group Wrap Up
Restate the teaching point. Ask:
Did you try what was taught?
Did it work for you? How will it
affect your future writing?
The students will complete the highlighting independently and
they will read to the group independently. They will also turn in
the worksheet for a daily grade. The students will need to be
fluent reader because the whole world revolves around being able
to read. The teacher will point this out to his/her students.
As a group wrap up the teacher will call on different
students to read a column, have a reading race, or read
the column as fast as he/she can. This will be a good
review for the students because they should have already
read the passage once.
