Introduction:
GM: G-CO.A.1
Know precise definitions of angle, circle, perpendicular line, parallel line, and line segment,
based on the undefined notions of point, line, distance along a line, and distance around a
circular arc.
GM: G-CO.A.2
Represent transformations in the plane using, e.g., transparencies, tracing paper, or geometry
software; describe transformations as functions that take points in the plane as inputs and give
other points as outputs. Compare transformations that preserve distance and angle to those that
do not (e.g., translation versus horizontal stretch).
GM: G-GPE.B.7
Use coordinates to compute perimeters of polygons and areas of triangles and rectangles, e.g.,
using the distance formula.
GM: G-GMD.A.3
Use volume formulas for cylinders, pyramids, cones, and spheres to solve problems.
GM: G-MG.A.1
Use geometric shapes, their measures, and their properties to describe objects (e.g., modeling a
tree trunk or a human torso as a cylinder).
GM: G-MG.A.3
Apply geometric methods to solve design problems (e.g., designing an object or structure to
satisfy physical constraints or minimize cost; working with typographic grid systems based on
ratios).
7.G.A.1
Solve problems involving scale drawings of geometric figures, including computing actual
lengths and areas from a scale drawing and reproducing a scale drawing at a different scale.
7.G.B.6
Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, volume and surface area of two-
and three-dimensional objects composed of triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, cubes, and right
prisms. (Pyramids limited to surface area only.)

Students will be able to:

● Create a city using surface area and equations of parallel and perpendicular lines.
● Define surface area and calculate the surface area of many different shapes.
● Define volume and calculate the volume of many different shapes.
● Know the different volume formulas for each different shape discussed.
● Draw parallel/perpendicular lines
● Using a computer program build a 3D city model.
● Calculate ratios of their city to the life size version of the city.
● Calculate and determine dimensions of their cities features
● Compare similar shapes
● Know when to use volume, area, and surface area and calculate them appropriately.

Abstract:
The students will be rebuilding the city of baton rouge for their unit project. This project
teaches them to transfer and contextualize their knowledge about surface area and volume.
Students will learn how to calculate ratios of their city to the life size version. They will also be
able to find equations to find parallel and perpendicular lines. Students will use the subscription
to CityPlanner to bring their ideas to life.

Rationale:
In this project students will understand the difficulty that goes into building a city. They
will be able to use the information they learn to make a difference in their community and even
discover a passion for architecture and the city of Baton Rouge. These students will grow to
appreciate the city around them after learning the difficulty of building a city. It is safe to say
that most of these students do not have a passion for mathematics or pride for where they come
from. If they had the opportunity to recreate their hometown it could change the way they think
about Baton Rouge. Giving them the opportunity to bring their own ideas to life can encourage
them to follow their dreams and continue to present their ideas because the community does care
about them. There are many things the students would not be able to see using only a 2D model
of their work. Having the CityPlanner program shows students how the city will actually
function and help determine which ideas are realistic and which ideas are not. The 3D model also
gives the students the feeling of achievement, the feeling that they are actually doing work that is
making a difference in their community. Plus, the CityPlanner program is an avenue for the
students to experience technology in a more constructive engaging way rather than experiencing
video games or television.

Description:
This project will be over the duration of 4 weeks. The students will first have to make a
2D version of their city before they are able to bring it to life using the CityPlanner program. The
students will be using parallel and perpendicular lines, surface area, and volume to create their
cities. They will have to take into consideration the population of Baton Rouge, and many other
outside factors. While using the CityPlanner, the students will begin by recreating their 2D
model into the program. The next step is to raise their major structures up from their layout into
three dimensional figures. The final step in the program is for the students to add their finishing
details to make their city actually theirs. This is a platform for students to plan, explore, and
create a final project of their own design. This program also reveals the connection in today’s
world of being drawn on paper, designed on a computer and then finally being built brick by
brick. The students are using this software to explore mathematical concepts and apply them into
an artifact of their own imagination.

Evaluation:
Throughout this project there will be many different formative and summative
assessments. There will be days of lecture-type classes where the students are learning the
background information on how to get their cities up and running. After these classes the
students will complete an exit ticket going over all of the material taught. After all lecture based
days are over there will be a quiz going over all material. There will also be checkpoints
throughout the project to ensure the students are working efficiently and understanding all
material that they need to complete their project. These checkpoints are solely for the students to
get feedback from teachers and peers to help them succeed. At the end of the project the students
will have met all objectives and completely understand all material used in building their city.
