ESSAY QUESTIONS

What is your motivation to join UDF? (300-500 words)

My primary motivation in joining UDF is to continue what I personally do best in high
school, which is debating. Becoming a student in Diponegoro University is one of my biggest
achievement and my first step to realise my dream. In my path of realising that dream, I know
that I should develop the things that I like from high school and debating is one of them.
Failed to compete in NSDC because the lack of awareness about debating in my hometown
motivates me to take my debating skills into University, if I can’t compete in NSDC then I
have to prove myself that I can compete in NUDC and other International Debating Events. I
believe UDF will provide the means for me to achieve that dream. Furthermore, debating for
me is not only about competing in various competition but it’s more than that, there are
various reasons why I want to join UDF. Debating in my opinion is also a way for someone
to advocate about issues that matter to us, as a college student I also want to be active as an
Agent of Change that actually knows about the issues surrounding us. I also believe that UDF
can be my second family in a place far away from my home. Based on my high school
experience in a debating club, I met some of my closest friends on a debate team. We travel
over the country together for tournaments, not to mention very intelligent and thoughtful
people tend to debate, and I hope by joining UDF those intelligent and thoughtful people in
UDF can pass their knowledge on to me. Based on my personality, here is my SWOT
analysis to help UDF to consider me as a new member:
Strenghts : I’m highly motivated to join UDF and to participate in UDF activities, I have
debating experience and have participated in a national debating competition, I can hold on to
my commitment
Weaknesses : I’m not really friendy to new people, a bit shy when meeting someone new for
the first time, and a little bit pessimistic toward myself
Opportunities : I’m highly motivated to improve my skills, I acknowledge and want to learn
from my mistakes
Threats : My pessimistic trait can sometimes trigger an anxiety attack whenever I’m in public
That is all my short motivation essay, I apologize for the mistakes I may cause from this
essay, I hope it can be used as a consideration to accept me as a new member of UDF. If I’m
trusted as a new member of UDF, I promise to commit and dedicate myself to UDF.

What do you know about trade war between US and China?

Please explain your opinion! (400-600 words)
Trade war between US and China happened shortly after Trump won the US Presidential
Election. Since campaigning for the election, Trump has always said that the trade between
the US and China is imbalance and blame it as the primary reason for unemployment in the
US. So to reduce unemployment and end the unfair trade as what Donald Trump said, Donald
Trump and his administration introduced Tariffs on China and China is also giving tariffs on
the US. These tariffs that are given by both countries are going back and forth and cause

damage on both ends. China is targeting their tarrifs on US automotive products, crude oil,
and crops like soybean from the US while the US tarrifs are targeted on aerospace products,
robotics, manufacturing, and also automotives. These tarrifs are like extra payment whenever
a country wants to export or import to a certain country and in this case is between The US
and China. This Trump trade policy that started the whole trade war has a good and a bad
impact on US economy. US Steel Companies are winning the trade wars because of the
Chinese needs of steel from the US, while United States’ soybean farmers and pork producers
are losing the war, and some customers of the United States in general are also losing the war
since in 2017 alone $507 Billion worth of imports are coming from China. For now many
manufacturers in the United States are holding their own but with most of the economy
coming from exports the tariffs are expected to have a huge impact and aprroximately 3000
jobs are at stake, and at the moment the farmers who are paying the biggest toll. On the other
end China is also feeling the effect of US Tarrifs on their manufacturers. This result in
Chinese manufacturers to look for new customers in Europe, Russia or the Middle East
dropping low margin products and cutting back on sales to the US. This trade war betwen the
US and China are also impacting on their currency power, and China is looking to lose on the
currency as Yuan just had its worst 2 weeks of the history of modern China economy. In this
trade war ther are no clear winner as who win the war, but for now this trade war has a good
and bad impact on both economy and both countries’ influence over other countries.
