PROFILED STEEL SHEETS
Steel deck is made by cold forming structural grade sheet steel into a repeating pattern of parallel ribs. The strength and stiffness of the
panels are a result of the shape of the ribs and the material properties of the steel. The present version of the Indian Standard
for Cold Rolled Cold Annealed (CRCA) steel (IS 513) is not rich in content in respect to the structural applications that CRCA steel
has been witne~sing in the country. With hot rolled (HR) Steel long available in grades like Yst 240 and Yst 310 for processing into
CR ste~l, the exclusion of structural grade steel from IS 513 remains an enigma. Indian steel manufacturers also make Yst 550 grade of
HR and thus availability of high tensile structural steel is a reality for structural grade CRCA material. However, because of the
low ductility of high tensile steel (elongations are generally about 1 to 4% for Yst 550 grade CR), its use for deck applications where
they act as formwork to support green concrete and unforeseen erection loads until the slab attains its properties may not be wise.

Transport considerations would generally limit the length of deck sheets to about 7.2 m. The sheets are furnished in standard
width with ends square cut. Any cutting for width, e.g. cuts for openings, angular fits etc. are done at the job site by the fitting crew.

SACRIFICIAL SIIUTTERING (FORM DECK)


Profiled steel sheets as sacrificial shuttering is a concept widely accepted in recent times for fast track construction.
It has been established as a pragmatic solution for tall industrial buildings where conventional shuttering props would have been
highly impractical. With commercial construclion fast gaining ground, and providing faster occupancy translates into sound

busi~ess logic, profiled deck sheets as sacrificial shuttering has become an obvious choice. Its advantages are not only techno-economic
but also highly practical and utilitarian.

STEEL - CONCRETE COMPOSITE DECK


In addition to acting as a form deck (shuttering) during the construction period, composite deck sheets substitute the
tensile reinforcement in the concrete slab. This is made possible by the composite action developed between
two dissimilar materials like concrete and steel by the provision of shear connectors at the interface of the two
materials. These shear connectors are embossments in the deck sheets in typical pattern unique to each profile. These embossments
develop friction as well as mechanical interlock between the concrete and steel sheet. These two reactions take care of
longitudinal shear developed at the interface of the concrete and steel sheet, preventing sliP. and thereby enabling the two
materials to act as a single entity of composite deck. To ensure friction at the embossments, there should not be any paint or grease
on the sheet surface in contact with concrete nor should any vibrating load be permitted to act on the slab untill the concrete has
set completely and composite action has developed.

The friction between the steel sheet and concrete is expressed by a co-efficient denoted as "k" while the mechanical interlocking between
steel and concrete made effective by the embossments is denoted by "m". The design of the composite slab is entirely governed by
these two coefficients "m" and "k" which are also known as the shear-bond values of a composite deck sheet.

It is not enough merely to incorporate the embossments on a profiled sheet to proclaim composite slab action.
Each profile with its embossment is unique and will have its own unique shear-bond value. This unique shear-bond value is
mandatorily to be established through extensive laboratory tests (BS 5950 : Part 4, EUROCODE 3) as per guidelines laid down
in the standard before the profile can qualify as a true, established composite deck sheet.

CKiLDECKSPANhas been parametrically tested independently and separately at Structural Engineering Research Centre (SERC),
Chennai and Coimbatore Institute of Technology (CIT). The test results at the two institutes have been cMlJ.ftaredand,thereafter
CRiLDECKSPAN has been certified as having m =88 MPa and k =0.032 MPa which may be used for design of composite slab capacity
as per BS 5950 Part 4/ Eurocode 3.

There is an increasing value of "time" and "quality" in modern construction. A perceptible shift towards larger column - free areas in
buildings is also evident. The use of steel in building construction ensures both these needs are fulfilled. The flexibility offered by steel
construction is well established. Steel is the only material that offers a "sustainable construction" approach and delivers maximum "life-
cycle"economy to construction. These, coupled with the comparative savings in mass, so essential for countering natural calamities,
and ease of restoration when damaged, makes steel the best answer for construction. The developed world has been adopting structural
steel applications for construction' for decades and the innovations in structural steel construction particularly for buildings, bridges
and flyovers have been manifold. The environment friendliness (including impact on health of workers) in the totality of construction
material, methodology and techniques makes steel construction an answer par excellence.
Composite construction is a combination of rolled or fabricated steel sections with concrete slab topping. Connectivity between steel and
concrete is achieved through shear connectors. The composite floor slab comprises of a metal deck (Le. a cold formed profiled sheet
designed to support wet concrete without propping and also act as positive moment reinforcement with the cured slab) 100 - 120 mm of
concrete and light 1fibre mesh reinforcement. The metal deck is supported on secondary beams. Such composite slabs result in decrease
In construction depth of the floor, lighter slabs and reduced foundation loads. Plastering costs too are eliminated. Large column-free
Areas, faster construction (the need to block working space through props and scaffolds is absent), reduction in overall weight,
better seismic resistance and simultaneous progress for other utilities are some of the typical advantages of composite slabs.

The critical factor is obviously the selection of material. With improvement and advancement in the quality of structural steel in India,
a wider range of steel is now available. Cold rolled (CR)steel in structural quality having better mechanical properties than Is 513 quality,
Essential for use in such construction, is now available. The designer has greater flexibility in choice of steel today. However, great care
needs to be taken in the choice of the deck profile. Typical trapezoidal sections, commonly used for roof and wall cladding, are not suited
for use as metal deck for composite construction. The design of the profile with -n= built characteristics for "non-slip" connectivity even
without use of shear connectors is of prime importance.

General Guidelines On Laying Metal Deck For Composite Slab Construction


Bearing : The minimum bearing for metal decking is 50 rnrn on steel work. For concrete or masonry work this shall be 75 mm
Minimum.

Fixing : At ends, fixing @ 300mm centres is recommended. At intermediate supports, fixing may be done @600 rnrn centres.
Fixing to steelwork may be done using shot fired nails or self drilling, self-tapping screws.
Slots may be cut in the decking to allow for the concrete encasement of beams.

Service Holes: For holes 1openings up to 250 rnrn, no special treatment is required. Prior to pouring of concrete the opening is
boxed out. When the concrete has acquired design strength, the deck may be cut using a non-percussive tool.

For opening larger than 250 mm, structural trimming steelwork shall need to be done as part of the supporting
steelwork. Angle framework may be provided where openings occur in between beams.

Loading : Concrete decking is vulnerable to damage during the construction stage. Overloading with items of machinery,
skips, reinforcement etc. must be avoided.
