Introduction and General Hints

All methods in this list are conservative recommendations. Different samples of the same sample type may show a
different reaction behavior. As a consequence, modifications of reagent mixtures and/or programs (e.g. longer ramp
time to avoid spontaneous reactions, longer hold time to obtain appropriate results) may be required. It is the user's
responsibility to adapt the methods with respect to the sample material.

The 'Generic Methods' will serve as a good starting point, if no other suitable method can be found. Use the
appropriate method according to the sample characteristics ('reactive' or 'inert') and to the type and number of vessels.

Start preliminary experiments with the lower sample weight given in the table!

When digesting sample materials, which tend to react spontaneously (like many organic materials and even metals),
we recommend to increase the ramp time and to reduce the pressure increase rate to 0.3 bar/s.

If a vigorous reaction is observed after addition of reagents, wait for 10-15 min before closing the vessels. If the
samples do not react spontaneously during the preliminary runs, you may increase the sample weight stepwise up to
the max. recommended sample weight.

For sample materials which tend to float on the surface, we recommend to use the stirring option in order to improve
the contact between sample and acid.

When running a temperature profile with a higher number of vessels than given in the table, extend the ramp time for
another 5-10 minutes.

After a digestion with hydrofluoric acid a subsequent complexation run may be necessary to complex free fluorides.
Add 6 mL of a cold-saturated boric acid solution (approx. 5 % H3BO3) per mL used acid.

We recommend to use Rotor 8NXQ80 with quartz vessels for ultra-trace analysis of e.g. Hg, Se, As.

All used reagents must be of appropriate purity and following concentration:

HNO3: 65 % HCl: 30-32 % HF: 40-48 % H2SO4: 96 % H3PO4: 85 % HClO4: 70-72 % H2O2: 30 %

Before starting with any application carefully read the instruction manual!
