COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING TRIVANDRUM

FIFTH SEMESTER B.TECH. (ME) FIRST SERIES TEST – SEPTEMBER 2018

ME 303 MACHINE TOOLS AND DIGITAL MANUFACTURING (ME)
Duration: 2 Hours Maximum: 50 Marks
Part A
Answer any FOUR questions. Each full question carries five marks
CO No. Q. No. Question
CO1 1 Orthogonal and Oblique cutting are not same. Substantiate the statement
CO1 2 Plastic deformation is phenomenon of machining. Clarify the statement
with figures of various zones of plastic deformation.
CO2 3 Categorize the different types of chips? Specify the conditions favouring
each of the type of chips?
CO2 4 Heat is generated in machining. Elucidate with various of zones of heat
generation and the phenomenon?
CO1 5 Cutting fluids are inevitable in modern machining by their properties. If you
agree with that statement, make it clear with their properties and types.
CO2 6 Suggest the heads of cost to be considered to prepare a quote for a
machining job tender and estimation method of any one head.
(4x5 = 20 marks)

Part B

Answer any THREE full questions. Each full question carries ten marks.

CO1 7 The ASA given an way of nomenclature/tool signature of single point

cutting tool. Narrate it in a manner by which you introduce it to
students.
CO1 8 Cutting force and feed force are the two directly measurable forces in
a machining with a single point cutting. But there are several forces
acting on different areas. Elucidate with figures if needed the way of
estimating the non measurable forces.
CO2 9 One cannot sustain the accuracy and finish of a machined surface with
a single point cutting tool due to changes in the tool geometry. Prepare
a short report as if you are discoursing the reasons and the mechanisms
C02 10 (a) Reckon the ways F W Taylor contributed to economics of machining .
(b) In a machining operation that approximates orthogonal cutting, the
cutting tool has a rake angle =100. The chip thickness before the cut =
0.50 mm and the chip thickness after the cut = 1.125 mm. Calculate
the shear plane angle.
(c) Graphically portray the relationship between cutting time and flank
wear.

(3x10 = 30 marks)
