Karon GOYO: Ang Batang Heneral Rizal C404

5:55-7:25PM TTh Characterization of the Portrayers

The movie was embedded with historical fact and a pinch of fictional touch to complement its narrative
sense. The film gave rise to certain characters which had a fresh perspective, differing from the ones we read on
books and historical artifacts. The movie presented the following characters:

Gregorio del Pilar. He was the center of this movie which revolved on his personal life. Less than the hero
most teachers would revere to, he was more like a general bounded with youthfulness that lead him to be a ladies’
man, self-doubtful, and quite reckless with his leadership skills. He was already looked up to by his fellowmen in
Bulacan, as their hero for he stood on the battle ground knowing when to surrender for the sake of his fellow
soldiers, and when to attack with all his life. More so with his quick promotion as the Major-General of Pangasinan,
he was fleeting with arrogance that his authority was greater than anyone else, most especially that he was
favored by the Señor Presidente who is Emilio Aguinaldo. For him, he believes that the path he’s taking is the right
one that would spring the justice and freedom the Filipinos are crying for. However, as his quest for such was in
progress, his child-like features brought by his juvenile nature, became a hindrance. He sure was strategically wise
on the battlefield as shown on the battle at Tirad Pass, but his reason and blind idolation with Emilio Aguinaldo’s
ways lead him to a false cause. However as the movie approaches its end, it showed that he was way beyond just
a general. He was a soldier filled with love, and he was bringing out the fever among his comrades too. As he
journeys through the mountains, running away from the Americans, he discovered several learnings and wisdom
from other people. Once a leader falls, another may rise, but the mother country, if it falls, no one could replace it.
Before the curtains fall, he knew that this last battle of him wasn’t just because of the President’s command, but a
battle for the Filipinos’ cry. Therefore, despite his lack of understanding on the current situation, his motive and
sentiment towards his countrymen was a reason for him to see the true value of a hero who’s not just a martyr,
but a light before the eyes of anybody else that awakens their true spirit that would stand for a common cause.

Antonio Luna. The great general who was fighting for a purpose was his title here. He was one with the
cause though seen as obssessive for his reason. His death was a mystery to the characters for they were puzzled
by his sudden passing.

Julian and Vicente Enriquez.

Bernal Brothers. Angelito, the youngest of the brothers, was set to an interrogation to discover the
whereabouts of his two brothers

Apolinario Mabini.

General Alejandrino Torres.

Remedios and Felicidad.

Americans.

Lieutenant Garcia.

Joven Herando.
