Background and release[edit]

Love Yourself: Tear was first announced on April 16, 2018, following the release of a nine-minute
short film entitled "Euphoria: Theme of Love Yourself 起 Wonder" on April 5.[8] The video included a
new single, also named "Euphoria", recorded as a solo by member Jungkook. The song was
produced by DJ Swivel, Candace Nicole Sosa, Melanie Fontana, Bang Si-hyuk, Supreme Boi,
Adora, and BTS' leader RM, and was complimented for its synth-pop style and tropical
house elements.[9] Tear was designed as a follow-up to BTS' 2017 EP Love Yourself: Her, with
"Euphoria" serving to connect the two releases.[10][11]
On May 6, the trailer for the album, featuring a new song entitled "Singularity", was
released.[12] The neo-soul solo was performed by member V, and serves as the intro track for the
album.[13] "Singularity" was produced by British composer Charlie J. Perry, with lyrics also provided
by RM.[14] The trailer was commended for its sensual, dream-like atmosphere, use of symbolism and
contrast, and charismatic performance by V.[15][14] The song itself received compliments for its
haunting tune, jazz elements, and themes of desperation,[16] with V garnering praise for his rich,
expressive voice and quiet, confident delivery.[17] Promotional concept photos presenting four
different themes were released on May 8, for the "O" and "R" versions,[18][19] and May 10 for the "Y"
and "U" versions.[20] The official track list of eleven songs was released on May 13, revealing a
second collaboration with Steve Aoki, as well as a track titled "Airplane pt.2", said to be an extension
of J-Hope's song "Airplane" from his mixtape Hope World.[21][22]
On May 14, the first video teaser for what was revealed to be the first single, "Fake Love", was
released via Big Hit's official YouTube channel.[23] The song has been described as "an emo, hip hop
genre track with a grunge rock guitar sound & groovy trap beat that creates an odd gloominess", and
lyrics that "clearly represent the theme of the album by realizing that a love that was thought to be
fated was actually a lie".[24] The Billboard Music Awards released a short, sneak peek clip from the
music video on May 15, which showed part of the new choreography and teased a line from the
song's chorus, "I'm so sick of this fake love".[25][26] Big Hit released the second and final video teaser
on May 16.[27] On May 18, the album was released, along with the music video for "Fake Love".[28]

Promotion[edit]
On May 18, 2018, two hours prior to the album's release, a "Comeback Preview Show" was
broadcast live from Los Angeles on Naver's V LIVE broadcasting site featuring BTS discussing the
new music. It garnered over 3.3 million viewers.[29] "Fake Love" made its worldwide television debut
on May 20, when BTS performed it live at the 2018 BillboardMusic Awards.[30] This marked the first
time that a Korean music act performed at the award show.[31]
As was previously done for Love Yourself: Her, a special "BTS Comeback Show", hosted by Mnet,
was broadcast live worldwide on May 24, featuring performances of "Fake Love" and several B-side
songs from the album. The group revealed behind the scenes images of comeback preparations and
presented a special video specifically for their fans. The show was broadcast simultaneously online
via Mnet Japan, YouTube, Facebook and Joox.[32][33] BTS also performed "Fake Love" on The Ellen
DeGeneres Show on May 25, marking their second appearance on the program.[34][35]

Love Yourself: Tear received positive reviews from critics. At Metacritic, which assigns
a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from critics, the album received an average score of 74,
which indicates "generally favorable reviews".[44] Neil Z. Yeung from AllMusic gave the album four
stars out of five stating that "stylish and yearning, Love Yourself: Tear is BTS at a polished and
focused peak, cohesive enough to feel like it was conceived in one particular period rather than
cobbled together like some of their previous releases".[45] Blanca Méndez of Spin stated that
"whereas the first installment of the series seemed uneasy and disjointed in its span of styles, Love
Yourself: Tear's genre-hopping sounds like the group is simply having a good time".[46] Sheldon
Pearce of Pitchforkwrote that the album "formula is a slick, loosely thematic album about love and
loss, with a stronger focus on rapping than ever before" and that "Tear aims for cohesion and
produces fun, prismatic songs in the process."[47] Jess Lau of The 405 noted that "Love Yourself:
Tear shows off each individual member's qualities fairly and acts as a well-structured introduction to
a wider global audience that is all too eager to pick out negatives".[48] Elias Leight from Rolling
Stone stated that "BTS' Love Yourself: Tear is K-Pop with genre-hopping panache" and noted that
"throughout it all, the members of BTS affect melodic sincerity, singing with intensity and melisma,
rapping in tones that show their effort and strain, as if caring never went out of style".[41] Caitlin Kelley
from Billboarddescribed the album as "one of their most thematically cohesive yet sonically varied
albums, with maximalist production erupting against lyrics about emptiness".[49]
Crystal Tai of the South China Morning Post said, "On Love Yourself: Tear, the band also known as
the Bangtan Boys, reveal that they are boys no longer, instead embracing a mature sound that is as
dark as it is real".[50] Jeff Benjamin from Fuse TV pointed out that "while the lead-up to the album
release saw BTS shifting expectations for Korean-pop acts, the music itself positions them away
from any dismissive boy band or pop star labels".[51] Hong Dam-young of The Korea Herald revealed
"BTS' focus has always been on connecting with listeners and using its members' own stories as
leverage. And the group has not deviated from that in its new album Love Yourself: Tear" describing,
"Musically, the fully packed 11-track album is admirable, as it seamlessly shifts between genres
ranging from emo hip hop and Latin pop to pop ballads. Unlike the group’s previous socially
conscious hip-hop works, Love Yourself: Tear is overtaken by dark tunes and complexed feelings of
love" adding that, "The key factor behind the album's explosive success doesn't lie solely on its
musical versatility and extravagance, but also in its overarching message: What truly matters is to
deliver messages that can truly touch a listener's heart".[52]
Alexis Petridis of The Guardian, however, gave the album a mixed review, writing that "on the plus
side, they're very good at ballads, performing them with a breathy intensity that's genuinely affecting
and powerful..." but "there is also stuff that you struggle to recall the second it finishes: in one ear
and out the other it goes, leaving no recognisable trace. It's not that it's overly saccharine, which is
the charge regularly levelled at K-pop; it's just commonplace". Petridis pointed out that "the
phenomenon of BTS seems more interesting than the music at its centre, although Love Yourself:
Tear is certainly good enough to keep the phenomenon moving smoothly".[53]

Commercial performance[edit]
Between April 18 and 25, 2018, the first six days of the pre-order period for Love Yourself:
Tear, IRIVER reported that the album had sold more than 1.44 million copies
domestically,[54] surpassing its predecessor Love Yourself: Her as the most pre-ordered album in
Korea, and making BTS the first K-pop group to have two consecutive albums exceed one million
pre-orders.[55] On May 24, news media revealed updated numbers showing that pre-orders had
actually crossed 1.5 million copies.[56] This record was eventually suprassed in July 2018 by BTS'
own album Love Yourself: Answer, with a difference of about 62,000 copies.[57] After its release, Love
Yourself Tear sold over one million copies during its first week, around 250,000 copies more
than Love Yourself: Her, with BTS becoming the first K-pop artist to achieve this on the Hanteo chart
since its inception in 1993, and making them true "double million sellers" (pure,
without repackage).[58]
On May 27, 2018, the album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, earning
135,000 album-equivalent units (including 100,000 pure album sales), becoming BTS' highest-
charting album in the US, as well as the first K-pop album to top the US albums chart, and the
highest-charting album by an Asian act.[59][60] It is also the highest sales week for both BTS and a
Korean act in the United States, and the first album primarily in a non-English language to top
the Billboard 200 since Il Divo with Ancora in 2006.[61] As of July 2018, according to Nielsen Music's
Mid-Year Report, Love Yourself: Tear is the ninth best-selling album of 2018 in the United States.[62]
In South Korea, the album sold 1,664,041 copies in its first two weeks, making it the highest monthly
sales for an album since the Gaon Chart's inception.[63] The record was previously held by BTS' own
EP Love Yourself: Her.[64]
The album has sold over 100,000 copies since its Japanese release, becoming the first of BTS'
Korean-language discography to be certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of Japan in
August 2018.[65]

Background and promotion[edit]

Love Yourself 承 'Her' is the first album to be released since BTS revealed their new "brand identity" on July
4, 2017, complete with a new, simplified logo and an alternative English name, "Beyond the
Scene".[1] Promotions for Love Yourself: Her began on August 10 with a series of posters that teased a set of
dramatic short films or "highlight reels" that were released over four days starting on August 15. On August
21, 2017, it was revealed that BTS was in preparation for a new mini-album to be released on September
18,[2] which was later confirmed by Big Hit Entertainment. On September 4, BTS released a comeback trailer
featuring "Serendipity", the intro track from the album. Recorded as a solo by member Jimin, the "chill-out
urban track" was noted for its "mystic vocals and characterful lyrics."[3] Two days later, Big Hit posted concept
photos for all four versions of the album on the label's official Twitter account.[4][5] The tracklist was posted on
September 12[6] and two teasers for lead single "DNA" were released on September 14 and 15.[7][8] On
September 18, the album was released alongside the music video for its title track, "DNA".[9] In the 24 hours
after release, the "DNA" music video had been viewed 21 million times, becoming the first K-pop group music
video to reach over 20 million views in 24 hours.[10]
BTS held a press conference on September 18, 2017, four hours before the album was officially released,[11] as
well as a special live broadcast on the V LIVE app after the release.[12] A comeback show was held live
on Mnet on September 21, and was simulcasted on video platforms and VOD services Mnet Japan in
Japan,[13] YouTube,[14]Mwave,[15] VIKI,[16] Iflix in Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia,
Thailand, the Philippines, the Maldives, Myanmar and Brunei, Joox, Toggle in Singapore,[17] Mnet Smart,
and iQiyi in Taiwan.[18] The program "will talk about the stories behind creating [BTS'] new album, the story
behind the creation of the group, and the truthful stories of the seven members."[19] Their first comeback stage
took place on September 22 on KBS' Music Bank.[20]

Commercial performance[edit]
During the period of August 25 to 31, LOEN Entertainment, responsible for the distribution of BTS' physical
releases, recorded a total of 1,051,546 stock pre-orders. This made BTS the first K-pop group to reach more
than one million pre-orders.[21]

Love Yourself 承 'Her' debuted at number one in Korea on the Gaon Album Chart,[22] while "DNA" debuted at
number two on the Gaon Digital Chart, with all tracks from the digital EP also placing in the top 40 of the
chart.[23] The EP opened at number seven on the US Billboard 200, making it the highest-charting K-pop album
on the chart and biggest sales week of a K-pop album until the release of BTS' own Love Yourself: Tear in
2018.[24][25] It achieved 31,000 album-equivalent units, of which 18,000 were in pure album sales.[24]This made
BTS the first Asian artist in seven years to debut within the top ten of the chart, surpassing the record set by
Filipino singer Charice with her eponymous American debut album, which debuted at number eight in
2010.[26] On October 7, 2017, BTS made their debut on the UK Albums Chart with the EP, peaking at number
14.[27]

According to the monthly Gaon Album Chart released on October 14, Love Yourself 承 'Her' was the highest-
selling release of September 2017, with 1,203,533 copies sold since its release on September 18. The album
also has the second highest monthly sales in the history of the Gaon Chart,[28] and the first in 16 years to exceed
1.2 million copies sold since g.o.d's fourth album Chapter 4, which was released in November 2001.[29][30] Love
Yourself 承 'Her' eventually became BTS' highest-selling album, overtaking their 2016 LP Wings, as well as
becoming the best selling album in the history of the Gaon Chart with over 1.61 million copies sold as of
March 2018.[31][32] It won the grand prize at the 32nd Golden Disc Awards in the Physical Category on January
11, 2018.[33]
After debuting at number two on the Japanese Oricon Albums Chart, the EP moved to number one in its
second week.[34]
The album has remained on the Billboard 200 for twenty-seven weeks, the only Korean album to do so.[35]

The Star 7/10[37]

Billboard writer Tamar Herman described the EP as "a dual exploration of the group's electro-pop and hip-hop
leanings", with the first half consisting of “dance tracks that emphasize the group's vocals" while in the second
half "the act's hip-hop side arrives in earnest...delivering powerful rap performances."[38] Viri Garcia of The
Cornell Daily Sun commended BTS for "trying to achieve a sound closer to pop while keeping their own
signature sounds" and succeeding in creating a "masterpiece full of emotion and musicality that can't be
paralleled by any American or Korean act."[39] However, Monique Melendez from Spin summarized the album
as "thematically confident in its separate halves but musically disparate", with the group refusing to
compromise on a specific musical direction. Melendez further commented that Love Yourself 承 'Her' came up
short compared to BTS' past works, such as Wings and The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1 and Part 2,
in which "visuals, lyrics, and sounds united under fully-realized concepts."[40]
The EP's lead single "DNA" was featured on Vulture as one of the "8 Best New Songs of the Week",
describing the track as the "sound of a boy band headed in a new direction plotted for crossover domination“
and one that "recategorizes BTS by shrugging off genre entirely."[41] The New York Times pop music critic Jon
Caramanica wrote that while BTS' music often exhibits the “flamboyance and sometimes manic energy" that is
characteristic of K-pop, Love Yourself 承 'Her' takes a remarkably "tranquil approach” to the genre through
side tracks such as "Pied Piper", which he described as "a slow disco number that's emphatic in its relaxation."
Caramanica additionally highlighted "Outro: Her" as a track with a hip hop beat that is "lush with
instrumentation, and moves with a casual saunter reminiscent of the mid 1990s."[42] Tamar Herman also offered
praises for the lyrical delivery of "Pied Piper", and stated, "A take on K-pop's rampant and highly profitable
fan culture, 'Pied Piper,' is BTS doing what they do best: addressing a societal problem through their jaunty
music." Herman called the track "BTS' most subversive song of their career."[43]

Wings is the second Korean studio album (fourth overall) by South Korean boy band BTS. The
album was released on October 10, 2016 by Big Hit Entertainment. It is available in four versions
and contains fifteen tracks, with "Blood Sweat & Tears" as its lead single.[1] Heavily influenced
by Hermann Hesse's coming of age novel, Demian, the concept album thematically deals with
temptation and growth. It was later reissued as a repackage album, titled You Never Walk Alone,
on February 13, 2017,[2] a continuation of the canon for Wings. Three new songs were added to the
track listing, with "Spring Day" and "Not Today" promoted as the lead singles.
Both albums received positive reviews from critics. They sold a combined 1.5 million physical copies
worldwide,[3] the group's highest record sales at the time.[4] This earned BTS the title of "million
sellers" due to the outstanding financial reception.[5] According to Gaon Chart, Wings was the best-
selling album of 2016 in Korea.[6]

Background and release[edit]

On August 31, 2016 Big Hit Entertainment released a statement announcing BTS's third global
official fan club concert where they would perform new material for the first time.[7][8] From September
4 to 13 Big Hit Entertainment released a series of short films for each member to promote the
upcoming album.[9][10] The short films started with Jungkook's "Begin",[11][12] followed by Jimin's
"Lie",[13]V's "Stigma",[14] Suga's "First Love",[15] RM's "Reflection",[16][17] J-Hope's "Mama",[18][19] and
ended with Jin's "Awake".[20]
Wings[edit]
On September 25, BTS released a comeback trailer on YouTube,[21] featuring member J-Hope
rapping solo. The video depicted a boy's mind meeting a devil called 'temptation'.[22][23] From
September 28 to October 4 Big Hit Entertainment released concept photos of the album[24][25][26][27] on
official Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook pages revealing the album will be available in four physical
versions designated: W, I, N and G.[28] The album's track list was then released on October 5 on the
official website and Twitter account.[29][9] A music video teaser[30] was also released on October 7 on
YouTube, indicating "Blood Sweat & Tears" would be the lead single. Big Hit Entertainment lastly
revealed the design and details of the physical album which would include a photobook, polaroid,
mini standee and poster.[31]
During the press conference for the release of the album, leader RM explained, "The harder a
temptation is to resist, the more you think about it and vacillate. That uncertainty is part of the
process of growing. 'Blood Sweat & Tears' is a song that shows how one thinks, chooses, and
grows."[32] Symbolism such as the 'wings' were representations of growth, with Suga adding, "The
song relays an optimistic determination to use our wings to go far, even if we are met with
temptations in life."[32] Jungkook explained during the group's preview show on V Live, that his solo
track, "Begin", was about his journey to Seoul and meeting the BTS members.[10] V described his
song, "Stigma", as "a song under the neo-soul genre". J-Hope described his song, "MAMA", as
unforgettable, as it was about his childhood emotions for his mother. "Awake" was Jin's first
experience in co-composition.[33] RM revealed the 14th track, "Two! Three! (Still Wishing For Better
Days)" ("둘! 셋! (그래도 좋은 날이 더 많기를)") was the first official fan song.[33] The song "Am I
Wrong" samples Keb' Mo's 1994 jazz/blues song "Am I Wrong"[34] and the album credits[35] Kevin
Moore as co-writer and co-producer.
You Never Walk Alone[edit]
On November 18, 2016 Big Hit Entertainment released a teaser trailer[36] for an upcoming concert
tour of Wings[37] while revealing the ticketing schedule[38] with ticket sales starting on December 21.
They later announced BTS would be back[39] on February 13, 2017[40] with part two of Wings. On
February 2 and 3 concept photos[41][42] were released on the group's official Instagram, Facebook,
and Twitter accounts, indicating that the physical album would be available in two versions,
designated 'Left' and 'Right'. The track list[43] was then released on BTS' official homepage and
Twitter account on February 7, revealing the track "Outro: Wings" as a remake from their previous
album. A music video teaser[44] was released on YouTube on February 10 hinting at the new lead
single, "Spring Day". They also released the design and details of the physical album, accompanied
by a photobook, photocard, mini standee, and poster.[45] On February 11, the second music video
teaser was released on YouTube, which indicated that "Not Today" was another single from the
album.[46]
You Never Walk Alone is a continuation of Wings and contains stories that were not included in the
previous album.[40][47] The album also contains messages of hope and consolation meant to heal the
youth of the generation.[48][according to whom?]

Music videos[edit]
Wings[edit]
A music video for "Blood Sweat & Tears" was released October 10, 2016[49] after a month of
promotional buildup. The music video tied in heavily with literary, philosophical, and artistic allusions
of Herman Hesse's coming of age novel, Demian.[50][51] The music video was produced and directed
by Lumpens[52] and GDW.[53]
You Never Walk Alone[edit]
On February 13, 2017, the official music video for "Spring Day" was released.[54] The song delivers a
message about never losing hope while waiting to be reunited with an estranged friend.[55][according to
whom?]
"Spring Day" is an alternative hip-hop song with the essence of British rock and electronic
music.[according to whom?] The main melody was written by RM.[56] The video was produced and directed by
frequent BTS collaborator Lumpens (YongSeok Choi)[52] and GDW.[53] On February 20 the official
music video for "Not Today" was released on YouTube.[57] "Not Today" is an
addictive moombahton track and the music video features a powerful moombahton dance
performance.[57][according to whom?] The video was produced and directed by GDW.[53] A week later BTS
released a second music video for "Not Today",[58] with a dance choreographed by Keone Madrid.[59]

Promotions[edit]
Wings[edit]

held a 'Wings Showcase'[62][63] for the release of the studio album at Lotte Hotel in Seoul, Korea. BTS
also promised to have new songs at upcoming concerts. Promotion on local music programs
continued for a month, starting with Mnet's M! Countdownon October 13[64] where they performed
three songs: the lead single, "Am I Wrong" and "21st Century Girl" the first week. On November 12,
the BTS 3RD Muster [ARMY.ZIP +]concert was held with BTS performing Wings comeback releases
for the first time.[65][66]
You Never Walk Alone[edit]

Wings[edit]
Wings pre-orders reached 500,000[75] copies on its first week, 200,000 more than BTS' previous
album, The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 2. The concert BTS 3RD Muster [ARMY.ZIP +] sold
all 38,000 seats within 15 minutes.[76] "Blood Sweat & Tears" then broke the record for fastest K-pop
music video to reach 10 million views.[77] Billboard stated that it was the most-viewed K-pop video in
America in the month of October 2016.[78][79]
Shortly after release, the group achieved an 'all-kill', simultaneously holding the No. 1 position on all
major South Korean music charts.[80][81][82][83][84] The album's lead single, "Blood Sweat & Tears",
became the group's first domestic No. 1 hit on Gaon Digital Chart.[85][86][87][88] All 15 songs on the album
charted in the top 50 of the Gaon Digital Chart, garnering over one million digital downloads and
over eight million streams.[89][90][91][92] Thirteen of the album's songs charted on Billboard World Digital
Songs with the lead single debuted at No. 1 on its first week.[93]
The album charted on the Billboard 200 at No. 26, making it the highest-charting best-selling K-pop
album on the chart at the time, with 16,000 copies sold and 11,000 in traditional album sales.[93] It
spent more than one week on the chart[94] making BTS the first K-pop act to achieve the feat with a
single album. In two weeks it sold 100,000 copies, nearly 13,000 of which were in traditional album
sales.[94] BTS also topped Billboard World Albums for the week of October 29.[95] In its third week, it
moved another 1,000 copies, spending another week as the highest-selling K-pop album in
America.[96] BTS made their debut in the Billboard Top Album Sales Chart on the week of October
29, 2016 with a peak position at No. 20.[97] It was the first Korean album listed on the UK Albums
Chart, at No. 62.[98] It was listed at No. 6 on the World Album Year End Chart and was selected as
the Best Kpop Album of 2016 by Billboard.[99][100] It broke South Korea album chart records as the
highest-selling album on its Gaon Monthly Chart[101] and was the highest-selling album since the
Gaon chart's inception. In addition to being Gaon's best-selling album of the year, it won Record of
the Year at the 26th Seoul Music Awards, Album of the Year (4th quarter) at the 6th Gaon Chart
Music Awards and Disk Bonsang or Album Division at the 31st Golden Disc Awards.
You Never Walk Alone[edit]
You Never Walk Alone received a record-breaking pre-order of over 700,000 physical copies, the
highest pre-order record for the first half of 2017.[102] The "Spring Day" music video broke the record
set by "Blood Sweat & Tears" for the fastest K-pop music video to reach 10 million views,[103] which
was then broken by the music video for "Not Today".[104] BTS also set a record for shortest time
between consecutive concerts at the large Gocheok Sky Dome venue for 2017 BTS Live Trilogy
Episode III: The Wings Tourin Seoul. Tickets for both domestic and international concerts on the tour
sold out within minutes.[105][106][107]
Within an hour of its midnight release, lead single "Spring Day" reached the top spot on eight online
music streaming sites, including Melon, Mnet, Genie and Naver Music. The high demand caused an
error on Melon where it temporarily became inaccessible.[108][109] It earned BTS four first-place trophies
on local music program awards.[110] "Spring Day" debuted at No. 15 on Billboard Bubbling Under Hot
100 and No. 1 on the Billboard World Digital Songs, selling 14,000 digital downloads. The four new
songs[which?] held the top four slots[111][where?] making BTS the first K-pop act to do so.[112] The single "Not
Today" then shot up to No. 1 on Billboard World Digital Songs the next week, recording BTS' fourth
entry as chart-topper on the ranking.[113]
The album You Never Walk Alone debuted at No. 61 on the Billboard 200, extending BTS' record as
the K-pop act with the most entries on the chart.[112] This eventually led to their 6th entry on the chart,
unique for a Korean artist at the time.[114] The album debuted at No. 1 on Billboard World Albums,
giving BTS their third chart-topper album on that ranking.[112] Upon its release in China, the album
sold 144,400 in the first week on QQ Music, and charted at No. 1 on the best-selling albums of the
week.[115] In South Korea, the album charted at No. 1 on Gaon Weekly Chart with 373,750 albums
sold in one week, earning the band their 7th weekly chart-topper and breaking the record set
by Wings.[116][110] It also topped February Gaon Monthly Chart, the highest physical sales for the first
half of 2017.[117]

Wings received mostly positive reviews from critics, for tackling social issues such as mental health
and female empowerment. Fuse's Jeff Benjamin wrote, "The rising K-pop phenoms' new album is
doing it right by letting their seven members spread their artistic wings and solidifying their individual
identities—all while keeping the band identity strong as ever."[10] Fuse listed Wings at No. 8 on their
list of the 20 Best Albums of 2016, praising the album's "vulnerable and honest song material" and
diverse tracks.[120]The album also topped Billboard's "10 Best K-Pop Albums 2016"
list. Billboard branded the album an "accomplishment all its own", praising BTS' involvement in co-
writing and producing and the compositional choice to allow each member a solo song reflecting
individual musical styles, showing that "they can compete with top pop acts." The music chart also
described BTS' music as "forward-thinking", referring to the tropical house and EDM sounds on the
album and lyrics that discussed the darker side of mental health issues.[121]
Rolling Stone's Nick Murray named Wings "one of the most conceptually and sonically ambitious pop
albums of 2016."[122] Billboard's Tamar Herman wrote an article on the repackaged album You Never
Walk Alone, in which he described the single "Spring Day" as an "alt hip-hop song infused with rock
instrumentals and EDM synths" combining the rap elements for which BTS has become known with
"dreamy vocals and yearning lyrics." Herman called "Not Today" the dual single counterpart to
"Spring Day", a power anthem for "all the underdogs in the world."[56] "Spring Day" ranked No. 1
on Dazed Digital's "20 Best K-Pop Songs of 2017" list, and the magazine described the song as "an
intelligent, compelling and elegantly restrained study of loss and longing" that "deliberately avoids
cliché pomp and drama".[123]

Background and release[edit]

Answer was first announced on July 16, 2018,[1] with the announcement of the album containing seven new
tracks coming the following day.[6] The album was designed as the finale of the Love Yourself series, which
connected the story plot of short film Love Yourself 起 Wonder, EP Love Yourself 承 'Her', and studio
album Love Yourself 轉 'Tear',[7] forming the "起承轉結 (Kishōtenketsu)" storytelling composition.[8]
On August 6, Big Hit Entertainment released a Most Beautiful Moment in Life note, part of a series of fictional
notes pertaining to the concept of BTS' albums, starting with their 2015 EP The Most Beautiful Moment in Life,
Part 1. The note, a new diary written by BTS member Jin, spoke him finding a notebook written by his father
in the story. The book discussed the father's failures.[9] Three days later, on August 9, the trailer for the album,
featuring a new song entitled "Epiphany", was released. The solo, described as a "building pop-rock melody",
was performed by Jin, speaks about finding self-love and serves as one of the tracks for the album.[10]The trailer
was directed by Yong-seok Choi (Lumpens),[11] and portrays multiple versions of Jin in a room, telling the
story of a personal journey.[12] Philip Merrill of the Recording Academy described the video as having a "sense
of going backward and forward, through time and through different versions of one's self'.[13] Discussing Jin's
performance of the video, Hong Hye-min of The Korea Times stated that it was as well-acted and emotional,
with Jin's "sorrowful, free voice stand[ing] out".[14]
Promotional concept photos presenting four different themes were released on August 13 for the "S" and "E"
versions,[15] and August 16 for the "L" and "F" versions.[16] The official tracklist was released on August 20,
revealing that it would be a compilation album with a total of twenty-five tracks.[17] On August 22, 2018, the
teaser for "Idol" was released.[18] On August 24, two hours before the release of Love Yourself: Answer, Big Hit
Entertainment announced that an alternative version of "Idol" featuring Nicki Minaj will be included in the
digital version of the album.[19] Afterwards, the album was released, along with the music video for "Idol".[20]

Promotion[edit]
On August 26, 2018, BTS held a press conference discussing the album, as well as the BTS World Tour: Love
Yourself, which began the previous day.[21] They will be performing "Idol", "I'm Fine", and "Answer: Love
Myself" on various South Korean music shows for the week of August 26, including M Countdown, Music
Bank, Show! Music Core, and Inkigayo.[22]

Love Yourself: Answer received positive reviews from critics. Nemo Kim from South China Morning
Post gave the album four stars out of five and said, "[BTS] rappers show[s] their chops on solo tracks, band
send[s] a message to Korean youth about self-love, and single Idol sees them don traditional garb and blend
pop with ancient percussion as Minaj joins in," praising this album "cements BTS’ place as kings of the
genre".[23] Tamar Herman of Billboard praised the album, calling it a "masterful culmination of years of work
and rife with meaning, Answer is undeniably a magnum opus from BTS that that few other artists, boy bands
or otherwise, ever can hope to achieve."[2]

Commercial performance[edit]
During the period of July 18 to 24, the first six days of the pre-order period for Love Yourself:
Answer, IRIVER reported that the album had sold more than 1.51 million copies domestically, surpassing its
predecessor Love Yourself: Tear as the most pre-ordered album in South Korea.[24]
