Civil Engineering Department Track alignment

1) Find out the super elevation and transition length to be provided on a rail way
Curve of 500 m radius located in a railway line if you know that Cd max = 100 mm
and Cex max = 75 mm. and the pattern of traffic is as follows:

No of Train Load Speed

no Types of trains
trains (ton) (Km/h)
1 Mail/ express and passenger train 12 750 50
2 Goods traffic 7 1700 15
3 Mixed trains 2 500 30

2) Calculate the super elevation and transition length for a 3° curve with maximum
permissible speed 110 Km/h. Assume the equilibrium speed to be 80 km/h and the
booked speed of the Freight train to be 50 km/h.

3) A curve of 875 m radius is located on a railway route where the maximum

permissible speed is 130 km/h. if the speed of freight trains is 65 km/h,
 Find the cant and if Ca max = 150 mm, Cd max = 100 mm and Cex max = 75 mm.
 Minimum length of transition if you know that:
Desirable rate of change of cant /cant deficiency =35 mm/s.
Maximum rate of change of cant /cant deficiency =46 mm/s.

4) A curve of radius 825 m is to be set between two straights with the deviation
angle of 60 the maximum permissible speed is 100 km/h, the speed of the goods
train is 75 km/h , the equilibrium speed of the section as decided by the chief
engineer is 80 km/h . Find the tangent distance of parabola and also calculate the
offsets of the transition curve if the station of the starting point of transition curve
is 253051, find out the station of the end of transition curve.

5) Part of railway line composed of two successive reverse curve as shown where
maximum permissible speed is 110 Km/h , maximum cant deficiency is 100mm
and maximum cant excess is 75 mm. it is required that:

1- Detailed plan of this part

2- The cant diagram of two curves

3- Curvature diagram

4- Calculate the stations and elevation of the point of curve (PC) and point of tangent
(PT) of two curves.

6) A 4‰ upgrade is joining a 5‰ down grade at level (10.00m), and station 10.000

km. The maximum speed is 100 km/h and freight speed is 50km/h. It is required
to connect the two grades by a circular vertical curve and calculate the offsets of
vertical curve.

7) For the given alignment, the maximum permissible speed is100 km/h and the
booked freight speed is 65Km/hr. The level of point C is (10.00). The maximum
super elevation is 150 mm and the distance AB must be the minimum. It is required
to:
1. Design the vertical and horizontal curves.

2. Draw a detailed plan and cant diagram.

3. Calculate levels for inner and outer rails at A and B.
