Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Kahoot! Mathematics

Content Area: Mathematics
Grade Level(s): 2nd grade
Content Standard Addressed: MGSE2.NBT.5 Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on
place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.

Technology Standard Addressed:

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable):

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☒ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☒ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☒ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☐ Teacher-Paced ☒ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Universal design for learning is all about creating learning environments that accommodate all students’
abilities and learning differences. UDL will support visual learning in my classroom. English learners can also
spend time and review the content as needed.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

The students will be completing the Kahoot! to tell me what they know and what they do not know. This is a
formative assessment for me to use to see where my students are at. They will do this on some sort of
electronic device and finish on their own time. I will walk around to make sure that everyone is on task and
working hard. This should take no more than 10 minutes.
Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):
☒ Multiple choice ☒ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☒ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
I want the students to know what they did wrong, so that they can make the decision to work on that
particular problem. It is important to me that students take initiative.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
We will go over any missed questions and depending on the amount of people who missed, I would go back
and reteach strategies to questions like that specific one.
How will the data be used?
In this task, I will be taking a formative assessment. Since things like this are fun for students, they will not
feel anxiety over an “assessment”. I will take this data to help me guild my teaching. I need to know what
level all of my students are on to teach them the correct way. This data will also give me the knowledge to
pull small groups, reteach, etc. I think that I would take this just as data, and not really for a grade. This would
not be a final test by any means. There goals would be shared with the parents. I think that after seeing
where the student is struggling, we can set a goal and share that. I want the student to be able to take
responsibility for their learning. I think that I could also use my small groups for differentiation.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

I probably would have tried a quiz beforehand that stressed the students out. By doing a Kahoot! it is less
stressful and more fun for the students. I want to really understand what the students aren’t getting so that I
can best help them. This will give me that opportunity. I hope this will be less intimidating so that I really see
what the students are and aren’t getting.
Reflective Practice:
I think that by making this formative assessment more of a game, students will be more excited to participate.
This will give me the opportunity to learn more about their learning, so I can best help them to move forward
in their learning. To enhance this project, I would maybe do another Kahoot! among the class to see where
everyone was at with their fluency in mathematics. This could give students the opportunity to compete,
since boys usually love to be competitive.
