Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan

GRADE 6-ENGLISH

I. OBJECTIVE:
At the end of the lesson the students are expected to:
 Define short story
 Determine the different elements of a short story
 Understand the value of honesty to others
 Analyze a classic short story

II. SUBJECT MATTER:


Topic: The Honest Wood Cutter
Sub-topic: Elements of a Short Story/ prediction

Materials:
Video of “The Honest Wood Cutter”
PowerPoint presentation of the “Elements of a Short Story”

III. PROCEDURE
 Recall what have been discussed on the previous lesson
A. ACTIVITY (10 minutes)
 Tell the students that they are going to watch a short story entitled “The
Honest Wood Cutter”
 Ask them to write down all the important information in the video that
they will watch

 Before playing the video, tell the students that you are going to pause the
video thrice. In each pause, the students are going to predict what will

happen next to the story. They are going to write their prediction in their
notebook.

SCENE MY prediction…

 After each pause, ask one or two students among the class to share their
prediction and what are their reasons in concluding their prediction.

B. ANALYSIS (15 minutes)


 Discuss the short story in the class
 Ask the students the following questions:

Literal

a. When/where did the story happen?


b. Who is the main character in the story? What are his characteristics/values?
c. What is the work of Deena and Soma?

Interpretive:

a. Deena is different from Soma, in what way? What are the values of Soma?
b. Why the God awarded Deena?
c. Why did Soma tried to deceive the God?
d. Do you think Soma is right when he told the God that the Golden axe is his
possession? Why or why not?

Applied:

a. If you are Deena, are you going tell the truth to the God or you are going to tell Her
that the Gold axe is yours?
b. If you are the God, what will be your punishment to Soma for his untruthfulness?

C. ABSTRACTION (15 minutes)


A.
 Write the word “STORY” in the board
 Ask the student to think of one word that they can associate with the word
“STORY”. Call five students to give the word that they associated with the
word in the board.
 Write the words that the students gave around the word “STORY”.
 Based on the words that the students gave, ask one or two students from the
class to define the word in the board in one sentence.

B.

 Discuss the definition of a short story and its elements using the prepared
PowerPoint presentation.

D. APPLICATION (20 minutes)


A. Group Activity
 Divide the class into five groups
 Tell them to think or brainstorm one situation/event that shows the value of
honesty
 Tell them that they are going to role play one of those situations

 They will be given 2-3 minutes to present their chosen event in front of the
class
 Read the rubrics for role playing so that the students will be guided in the
said activity

IV. ASSIGNMENT

A.

a. In a one whole sheet of paper, ask the students to get the elements of the short
story of “The Honest Wood Cutter”
b. Tell the students to use any graphic organizer to organize the idea from the
short story.
