TECHNICAL DATASHEET#TD2501AX

PID Controller
P/N: RPID-M512-01

FEATURES
• Analog Closed Loop PID controller provides a
single channel interface between a control system
and a unipolar or bipolar proportional solenoid
actuator as well as redundant feedback devices
such as a LVDT, RVDT or dc transducer
• Field configurable with multiple potentiometer
adjustments and DIP switch selections
• Accepts 18-32 VDC power supply input (battery)
• Reference (command) input is user selectable
(+1-5V or 4-20 mA)
• Output current ranges are user selectable with a
DIP switch in 15, 20, 50 and 100 mA steps to
make various output combinations up to 185 mA
maximum (unipolar or bipolar) PID Controller
• Unipolar or bipolar output is user selectable (DIN rail mount packaging not shown)
• Offset current is user adjustable (0 to 80% of full scale)
• Short circuit protection provided on actuator output
• RFI protection provided on output
• Proportional, Integral and Derivative on/off selection with user adjustable gain
• Integral and Derivative constants are user selectable (100 V/s or 10 V/s)
• Superimposed dither frequency is user selectable for 10 Hz, 25 Hz, 50 Hz, 100 Hz and
combinations of those increments
• Superimposed dither amplitude is user adjustable (0 to 10% of full scale)
• Latching enable connection accepts an external NC contact for normal operation and provi des an
external shutdown capability
• Latching shutdown failure indication
• Onboard LED indication of controller disabled
• LEDs to monitor Power OK for positive and negative power supply lines
• Latching response upon occurrence of an input, position or feedback failure with onboard
pushbuttons to reset the fault and multiple LEDs to indicate signal failures
• Isolated optocoupler alarm output terminals for position, feedback and input failure
• Terminals for external input, feedback and position failure alarm resets
• Position feedback signal conditioning circuit for an external 5-wire LVDT or RVDT sensor
• Potentiometer adjustment of the LVDT zero and span
• LVDT excitation frequency is fixed at 3 kHz
• Secondary feedback input accepts user selectable 1-5V or 4-20 mA (overcurrent protected)
• Position readout utilizes a 1-5V or 4-20 mA signal (short circuit protected) with terminals for an
external meter connection
• Position error is adjustable from 5 to 25%
• Open loop operation is user selectable
• Operational from 0 to 70 degrees C
• Screw terminal connections accept 18-22 AWG wire (12-14 AWG for grounding wire, 14-18 AWG
wire for power input)
• DIN rail mountable for remote mounting in a typical industrial control panel

PID Controller – Basic Function Test

(Use this procedure to get started. Select desired settings after running this test.)
OPEN LOOP CONTROL, 4 – 20 mA input, +/-50mA output
1. Place a jumper between screw terminal connections EXTERNAL DISABLE and GND.
2. Set output current for 50mA (SW3-7 ON).
Set command input for 4 to 20mA (SW1-2 ON).
Set output to bi-polar (SW2-8 OFF).
Set for open loop control (SW1-7 ON).
Set for 10Hz dither (SW3-1 ON).
Set for proportional gain only (SW2-7 ON).
3. Set PROPORTIONAL Gain. Adjust potentiometer to fully counter-clockwise.
Set MAIN Gain potentiometer to center.
4. Apply POWER (24VDC).
5. Apply 12mA to the command input and OFFSET potentiometer to adjust output to 0mA.
6. Apply 4mA and use the MAIN Gain potentiometer to set the output to –50mA.
7. Apply 20mA and check that the output is +50mA.
8. Re-check that center (12mA command input) is 0mA output.
9. Use the OFFSET and MAIN potentiometers to adjust as needed.
