Discuss Meaning or Message From Text
Every person is different and special in their own way and no one should be
discriminated against because of these differences. It is important to fight for
equality and fair treatment, and to never allow segregation.
Self Portrait Activity
 Art time!
We are going to be drawing pictures of
ourselves to celebrate the diversity in the
classroom!

(During this activity we will be passing out

old, broken crayons to some students, and
brand new ones to other, so they can get a
sense of segregation and unfairness.)
Real World Colors and Shapes
Remember when drawing ourselves we need to use real word colors and shapes!

Examples:

● Colors of Hair
○ Brown
○ Black
○ Yellow
● Shapes
○ Head: Oval or Circle
○ Body: Lines, Rectangles, Ovals, Triangle
Gallery Walk to See Portraits
We are going to be doing a Gallery Walk to see how no two self portraits are the
same, and they are all special in their own way.

Place your portrait on your desk so we can walk around and look the work
everyone else has done.
Gallery Walk Discussion
We will ask students what they noticed about the pictures. Some students might
share that they noticed how their friend’s picture was different than theirs. We
will talk about how every person is different and it is good to celebrate our
differences.
Celebrating Differences Activity
1. Everyone will get a cup with a snack in it.
2. One of the teachers will say something, and if it applies to you, poor your
snack into the bucket.
3. Once everyone has poured their snack in, we will mix it up to see that all of
our differences are what makes us fun and special.
4. We will dump the mixed snacks back into the cups for a treat!
