Generalist Nursing Practice- Portfolio Reflection
‘The outcome of generalist nursing practice focuses on access to healthcare for
people regardless of their stage of life. The creation of community resources for people is
important and can help increase the continuity of care for patients.
During this course we reviewed several opportunities for healthcare professionals
to offer support in their local communities. There were several areas within the related
‘community nursing field that were exposed to me as a healthcare professional that I had
not previously considered
One of the projects completed for NURS 340 was the Windshield Survey that
required the student to identify at least three aspects of their community that could affect
health. It was conducted in two parts; a written portion defining community, community
health and community as a client, reviewed Healthy People 2020 and possible health,
risks as well asa table including different aspects of the windshield survey. During my
completion of the windshield survey, I recognized the importance access to healtheare in
rural areas is to patients. I live in a rural area, and grew up in an even more rural area than
I currently reside. It became alarming the lack of close medical resources in my
‘community, especially the fact that I have to drive a minimum of 30
utes to my
healtheare provider and it takes 45 minutes to reach any hospital. I am fortunate to have a
vehicle to reach my healthcare resources but there are some that do not and have to rely
on others to get them to their appointments and can therefore decrease compliance.
Overall I found that there are opportunities within my community that may be
interested in participating. The importance of education and primary prevention was very
evident throughout this course as well.
