EQUALITY VIRGINIA

ABOUT US:

Equality Virginia is a statewide nonprofit, non-partisan outreach program fighting for equality

through education, community organizing, and advocacy for all Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and

Transgender (LGBT) Virginians.

Young Americans that identify as LGBT are five times more likely to attempt suicide than their

heterosexual peers. (1) These young people feel unwelcome and unequal, and its past time that

we change this. This organization exists because we need to build a society where all are

welcome, and nobody feels persecuted or discriminated against because of their sexual

orientation or gender identity. Equality Virginia believes we are stronger together than alone, and

it is our mission to create an accepting and equal commonwealth for all LGBT individuals and

their families.
Equality Virginia was founded in 1989, as Virginians for Justice. In 2002 with the founding of

the Equality Virginia Education fund, Virginians for Justice changed to Equality Virginia,

clarifying and solidifying our mission of building a welcoming and fair Virginia. You can find

the Equality Virginia offices in the heart of Richmond, at 530 East Main Street, 600, Richmond,

VA 23219, or write us at P.O. Box 17860, Richmond, VA 23226. Today in 2018, Equality

Virginia is going strong, still solemn in our mission, still seeking justice for all Virginians just

like almost 30 years ago.

How does Equality Virginia follow through on our mission of building a better

and more equal Virginia?

We Engage With The Business Community:

Members of the LGBT community are more likely to be discriminated at work than their

heterosexual coworkers. Equality Virginia works with Virginia’s large and small

businesses through our Equality Means Business program to create and showcase Virginian

workplaces where All Are Welcome.

We Create Transgender Visibility:

Transgender individuals are one of the most at-risk demographics in America. The

National Center for Transgender Equality published in 2015 that 40% of transgender adults

reported attempting suicide; 92% of these individuals reported these attempts were before they

were 25. (2) Increasing visibility and acceptance of transgender issues is critical to showing these

young people that they can have a full life in Virginia. Through advocacy, community

organizing, and outreach we want to build a Virginia where all transgender individuals know

they are equal.

Build Inclusive Schools:

Equality Virginia works within our local school districts to design and implement anti-

bullying and nondiscrimination policies to protect all LGBT school students and staff in

Virginia. We know that LGBT youth are at an extreme risk if not shown acceptance and

tolerance, we need to make sure schools show these students that they are safe to be themselves

in Virginia’s schools.
Social Media:

Equality Virginia is excited for the day where we are no longer needed as an

organization. Our ultimate goal is to build and thrive in a great culture of pervasive tolerance,

fairness and equality. We can’t wait to achieve our mission, and we hope you’ll help.
