GUIDELINE FOR STUDENTS
DESIGN PROJECT I

1.0 FORMAT

1. Body of report should include all typewritten text such as analysis, results, summaries,
discussions, descriptions, literature review. The format of the report must follow the guideline
described in Section 2.2.
2. Where calculations are concerned, provide one sample calculations for each main item to be
calculated for market analysis, break even analysis, manual mass balances and energy
balances. Keep the key calculation features in the main report, the rest can be included in the
Appendices.
3. All repeat calculations for mass and energy balance, simulation outputs (HYSYS/SuperPRO),
property data, MSDS and spreadsheet calculations should be put in the Appendices.
4. Regarding Appendices, provide ONLY the necessary information. DO NOT COPY chunks of
material from textbooks, internet or other sources.

2.0 PROPOSAL & REPORT REQUIREMENTS

2.1 PROPOSAL

The proposal should be between 10-15 pages (exclude appendices). Proposal must be
submitted on the specified date according to the Gantt chart provided at the beginning of the
semester.

The content of the proposal should include:

i. Description of methods that can be applied, selection and justification of the best method. The
safety of the plant, waste or/and by-product (if any) should be taken into consideration.
ii. The Process Flow Diagram (PFD). Students are not allowed to copy the existing plant PFD.
Students are advised to refer to the existing plant as a guide ONLY. PFD must be developed
according to BS symbols.
iii. The study the supply and demand of the products. It should also include the proposed production
rate as well as the profitability projection of the plant.
iv. A proposed site location of the plant which considers marketing area, raw material supply, transport
facilities, availability of labor, availability and price of land, effluent disposal facilities, local
community considerations, climate, political and strategic considerations and utilities.

3
2.2 REPORT

The maximum number of pages for the report is 100, excluding appendices. Students are encouraged to
submit the draft of the report to the supervisors 2 weeks before the final submission date, to allow for
corrections (if any). Final report must be submitted to the Coordinator on the specified date according to
the Gantt chart provided at the beginning of the semester.

Contents

The report should consist of the following topics:

i. Process introduction, process background, process details (i.e. chemistry, kinetic, thermodynamics)
and process selection.
ii. Supply and demand study, market analysis and break even analysis.
iii. Site selection and site location study.
iv. Physical and chemical data properties, environmental and safety consideration, waste treatment
and material safety data sheet (MSDS).
v. Detail mass balance and energy balance.
vi. Process Simulation (ASPEN PLUS/HYSYS or SuperPRO).

Other formatting information:

 Font type & Size: Arial, 11 pt

 Spacing: 1.5
 Page layout, Margin: Top 1”, Bottom 1”, Left 1.25”, Right 1”
 All pages must be numbered
 The references should be cited correctly. And the list of the references should be included at
the end of every chapter.

5.0 CONSULTATION

The student is provided with an individual log book to record all Design Project activities. Any
information, discussion, interview or visit during the semester must be recorded properly.

6.0 LOG BOOK

The student is provided with an individual log book to record all Design Project activities. Any
information, discussion, interview or visit during the semester must be recorded properly.

7.0 REPORT SUBMISSION

The report will be submitted to Coordinator in separate chapters. For each chapter, the front
cover of each chapter should have the followings:

1. The Project Title

2. The name of the Chapter/Topic (e.g: Site Location)
3. The names of the students in the group
4. The Supervisor’s Name

**The group number (i.e EH2207B) should be indicated under the Supervisor’s Name.

For each Chapter, the colour of the front cover should follow the color codes given by the
Coordinators at the beginning of the semester.
