This section describes the controls on the IBM 9068-A01/A03 printer. The IBM
9068-A01/A03 printer offers the following types of operator controls:
1. Operator Panel
2. Miscellaneous Controls
3. Document Insertion Aperture

Operator Panel

This light indicates that power is being supplied to the

printer. During normal operation, this light is the only
light that remains on at all times.

This light indicates the following:

On A document was inserted into the
printer, and the printer is operating
normally and ready to print.

Blinking An error occurred during operation.

Off No document is in the printer, the

printer is switched off, or the
printer is not ready to print.

These lights are used as determined by your

organization. Ask your supervisor for a description of
these lights.

This light comes on in a serial or USB connection when

the communication cable is connected and a control
program (the device driver) is available. This light is
continuously on in a parallel connection.

1-2 IBM 9068–A01/A03 Multi-Purpose Passbook Printer Operating Guide

These buttons send a signal to the control unit or to the
computer notifying it that the printer is ready to print.
If your organization has provided for it, your printer
can be shared by two work-station operators. A Start 1
or a Start 2 button is assigned to each operator to
control the printing from his or her work-station. Refer
to “Printing a Document” on page 2-12 for information
on how to use these buttons. The Start 1 and Start 2
buttons are also used to start the print test. Refer to
“Print Tests” on page 3-6 for information on how these
buttons function in print test.

The LED display displays a 2-row alphanumeric which

indicate the machine status and the printer setup
functions. At power-on self test, it displays a four-digit
micro-code level in two passes.

This button stops the printing and releases the

document. When this button is pressed during a
hardware error, the printer is reset.
Note: If your organization decides to do so, the printer
can print the remaining stored data on the next form
that you insert.

This button is used by the operator to disable the auto

document alignment function. In self-test mode, this
button also changes the numbers on the LED display.
Refer to “Chapter 6. Customizing Your Printer” on
page 6-1 for details on how to use this button in
self-test mode.

Miscellaneous Controls
Cover Action Detect Function
The IBM 9068-A01/A03 printer monitors the open and close status of the top
cover. Printing will stop when the top cover is opened and the document will
be ejected automatically when it is closed.

Power Switch
This switch turns the power ON and OFF. Do not power-on immediately after
powering off, wait 2 seconds.

Audible Alarm
This audible alarm can be set by programming. For example, you can program
the alarm to sound three times after a print operation. The only
non-programmable condition is a hardware error. The alarm will sound for
two seconds. Ask your supervisor on how the alarm is set for your
organization.

Chapter 1. Introducing the IBM 9068-A01/A03 Printer 1-3

Document Insertion Aperture
This aperture allows the operator to insert and remove forms at the front of the
printer. The aperture has a horizontal, flat surface which allows most
documents (of sufficiently short length) to be inserted with a single hand. The
document orientation for insertion is top-edge first and face up.

The operator is not required to register the document to a precise starting print
position. If the document is skewed, the IBM 9068-A01/A03 printer
automatically corrects the document skew or returns the document if the skew
cannot be corrected.

and allows wider variation of printing paper than high-impact force printing.
The one-time high-impact force printing is achieved only when you press the
Start 1 or Start 2 button before inserting a document; HP is displayed on the
LED. After printing is completed and the document ejected, one-time
high-impact force printing is automatically deactivated and HP on the LED
goes off. To enable this function, set 21 with the function definition 1 setup
command 51. Refer to “Function definition 1 setup (command 51)” on
page 6-27 for details.
