Chapter 1. Introducing the IBM 9068-A01/A03 Printer
Front View
The following units can be connected this printer: IBM PC, PS/55, PS/2,
PS/VP, NetVista, or an Aptiva System Unit.
The illustration below shows the rear view of the IBM 9068-A01/A03.

Operator Controls
This section describes the controls on the IBM 9068-A01/A03 printer. The IBM
9068-A01/A03 printer offers the following types of operator controls:
1. Operator Panel
2. Miscellaneous Controls
3. Document Insertion Aperture
Operator Panel
Miscellaneous Controls
Cover Action Detect Function
The IBM 9068-A01/A03 printer monitors the open and close status of the top
cover. Printing will stop when the top cover is opened and the document will
be ejected automatically when it is closed.
Power Switch
This switch turns the power ON and OFF. Do not power-on immediately after
powering off, wait 2 seconds.
Audible Alarm
This audible alarm can be set by programming. For example, you can program
the alarm to sound three times after a print operation. The only
non-programmable condition is a hardware error. The alarm will sound for
two seconds. Ask your supervisor on how the alarm is set for your
organization.
The operator is not required to register the document to a precise starting print
position. If the document is skewed, the IBM 9068-A01/A03 printer
automatically corrects the document skew or returns the document if the skew
cannot be corrected.

Replacing the Ribbon Cartridge
1. Switch the power switch to off.
2. Open the top cover.
3. Push back the blue latch on the left side of the print assembly at the same
time tilting up the upper frame by holding the blue portion, then release
the blue latch.
Reordering Cartridges
The part number for reordering the ink ribbon cartridge is 07K4446. You
can obtain the cartridge from any IBM-authorized supplies distributor.

Documents having the above conditions could damage the printer. Never
insert such documents into the printer.
Documents should be aligned to the left or the right guide. (see “Inserting a
Document”).
Note: Your organization might not use the print operation procedures
described below. Ask your supervisor for the correct procedure for your
organization.
Note: If you are using REMS, performing a hex dump test may result in
communication error.
Instructions
1. If the printer fails during normal operation, do the diagnostic tests. See
“Power-On Test” on page 3-6. If the printer fails again, go to the next step.
2. Compare the symptom on your printer with the symptoms in the following
Symptom-Action Tables:
v Operator Lights
v LED Display Indications
v Printing Failure
3. If your symptom matches any of the symptoms in a table, perform the
prescribed action, each step at a time.
4. After each step, determine if the problem is corrected. Then, return to
normal operation.
5. If the problem is not corrected after you perform the prescribed action or if
you cannot find the symptom in the following tables, follow your
organization’s procedures to get service.
