Introduction

Assembling a computer involves connecting internal and

external computer components. Internal computer components

include the ones that are installed inside a system case,

such as motherboard, RAM, disk drives, and disk devices.

External computer components are devices that are attached

to the system case, such as mouse, keyboard, scanner, and

modem. You need to first decide the type of components you

want to install before starting to assemble a computer.

There are different precautions you need to cater to in

order to successfully assemble and disassemble a computer.

Assembling computers is a large part of a technician’s

job. As a technician, you will need to work in a logical,

methodical manner when working with computer components. As

with any learned trade, your computer assembly skills will

improve dramatically with practice.

Understanding how a PC is assembled and disassembled

is a key component in the training for a computer

technician. Knowledge of how the computer parts “fit” will

help the technician solve repair and upgrade problems. IDE

storage devices, such as the hard drive and CD-ROM drive,

are the most common type of storage devices installed in

today’s PC. How can the computer technician ensure the

COLLEGE OF INFORMATION AND COMPUTING SCIENCE

2
CAGAYAN STATE UNIVERSITY SANCHEZ MIRA CAMPUS |

cabling for these devices is properly oriented? Make sure

that the colored stripe [usually red, sometimes blue] is

oriented on the number 1 pin of the IDE port [both on the

motherboard and the drive]. On the drive’s IDE port, the

number one pin is usually closest to the power connector.

Building and assembling a computer, for those who have

a penchant to do so, may be a very rewarding experience. If

you are reading “How To Assemble A Desktop PC” (Personal

Computer), you are probably contemplating building or

assembling a computer instead of purchasing one pre-built

or pre-assembled. Building or assembling a desktop PC is a

viable option for many people and may bring significant

benefits.

This document contains step by step disassembly

instructions. The instructions are illustrated where

necessary with images of the part that is being removed or

disassembled. Furthermore, the screws that are removed are

shown in the image of the parts themselves.

CPU Assembling and Disassembling Tool

The first thing and important thing to do is prepare

our tools. We can’t disassemble without using tools so this

the most important.

Figure 1: CPU Assembling and Disassembling Tool

This is the thing we might need in the performance;

number one is screw driver, such as Philip. And we need

gloves for safety reasons, computer edges are a sort sharp

so this will be our hands and fingers supporters. And the

last thing is brush; brush is very important tool in this

activity. Because the computer is full of dust or dusty.

This is serve as for cleaning the computer and each part.

Outer shell casing

System case is the box that holds the different

components of a computer. The method of opening a system

case depends on the type of cases, or form factors that are

available. The main goal or objective of this step is to

remove the outer shell casing of the system unit.

Figure 2: Outer shell casing

System case is the box that holds the different

components of a computer. The method of opening a system

case depends on the type of cases, or form factors that are

available. The main goal or objective of this step is to

remove the outer shell casing of the system unit.

There are system cases that have two covers, right and

the left, which you have to remove. You have to unscrew the

COLLEGE OF INFORMATION AND COMPUTING SCIENCE

5
CAGAYAN STATE UNIVERSITY SANCHEZ MIRA CAMPUS |

required screws in order to remove the covers. Once the

screws are removed, you can remove the side panels. On most

computers, they just slide off. Remove the system case and

keep it aside so that the whole system can be seen.

I found out that the system case has six screws and

once I opened it, it is dusty and dirty so I cleaned it up

by using brush. And also it is a sort of sharp; especially

the edges which we need to use globes in order for us to

have a safety performance in disassembling the computer.

To start it I used a screw driver with a size of 1 x 3

inches. In using the screw driver, it should be counter

clockwise you really need a force because the screw is very

tight. After the case is disassembled, the inside of the

system unit will be seen.

My finding in this procedure is to encountered just 4

screws but its 6 screws.

Before we remove the outer shell casing, marc

unplugged those cables that plugin. He starts unscrewing

the six screws on the back of the computer. Once the screws

are removed, marc removed the side panels he slides off.

We found out that there are 6 screws holding the outer

shell of system unit.

CPU Fan

The CPU fan is located right on top of the CPU heat

sink, which is a large piece of metal with fins on the top.

Used to cool the CPU (central processing unit) heat sink.

Effective cooling of a concentrated heat source such as a

large-scale integrated circuit requires a heat sink, which

may be cooled by a fan; use of a fan alone will not prevent

overheating of the small chip.

Figure 3: CPU Fan

The main goal or objective of this step is to remove

the CPU fan, so that we can see the heat sink which we are

going to clean it to. The CPU fan plugs into the

motherboard just follow the wires and you should easily

find it.

COLLEGE OF INFORMATION AND COMPUTING SCIENCE

7

CAGAYAN STATE UNIVERSITY SANCHEZ MIRA CAMPUS |

The CPU fan has four screws; the screws are deeper and

smaller than the usual screws. That’s why we use a smaller

and a longer screw driver. Once the screws are finally

loosened, we just simply pull the CPU fan from the CPU heat

sink.

A cpu fan is a fan inside, or attached to, a computer

case use for active cooling and may refer to fans that draw

cooler into the case from the outside, or air across the

heat sink to cool it.

After removing the case the next step to do is to

remove the cpu fan at the top of the cpu heat sink, which

is a large piece metal with pins on top.

The cpu fan plugs into the motherboard, we follow the

wires that connected in cpu fan and it is easy to find. To

remove the fan from the heat sink, we remove the four

screws.

We found out that cpu fan has four screws with rubber

and located at the top of heat sink which the one giving

the cpu cooling system.

Power Supply

Power supply box is the unit that supplies electricity

to all the internal components of a system that are

connected to it. The power supply supplies power to every

component in a computer, therefore it has the most wires

out of every other component in the computer.

Figure 4: Power Supply

The first thing I will do is unplug every wire coming

from the power supply. Once everything is unplugged,

unscrew the screws holding the power supply in place, on

COLLEGE OF INFORMATION AND COMPUTING SCIENCE

CAGAYAN STATE UNIVERSITY SANCHEZ MIRA CAMPUS |

the back of the computer. Next, push the power supply from

the outside, and then lift it out.

Power supply has four screws located at the back of

the computer. Each wire is connected to the other component

of the computer. One is connected from the motherboard, and

the others connected to the CD/DVD drives, Internal Hard

Drive and Portable hard drive slot.

This figure is to remove power supply in a way of

removing those screws. Marc assigns me to get the zip lock

and put those crews inside of it. And we help each other to

remove the power supply form its place.

We found out that the power supply is a large metal

box.

When the performer is starting to disconnect the

things that are connected to power supply, he takes some

pictures of it to ensure that he don’t forget when the

cables are connected. After disconnecting the things, he

use a screw driver to unscrew the power supply.

My findings in this procedure is taking pictures is

important because it will help eventually when you to

assemble again.

CD/DVD Drive

Optical drives retrieve and/or store data on optical

discs like CDs, DVDs, and BDs (Blu-ray discs), any of which

hold much more information than previously available

portable media options like the floppy disk.

Figure 5: CD/DVD Drive

First, unplug the connector from the back of the

drive. Once that is completed, unscrew some screws and pull

on the tab securing the drive in place, and then pull it

out from the inside. If you don't have a second drive,

there should be a flat piece of metal covering the drive

slot.

COLLEGE OF INFORMATION AND COMPUTING SCIENCE

11

CAGAYAN STATE UNIVERSITY SANCHEZ MIRA CAMPUS |

The CD/DVD drive is one of the easiest components to

remove. And there is only two screw in it located at the

side.

Removing the CD/DVD drives is one of the easiest

components of system unit to remove. In order to do this,

the performer and a screw driver that has a size of 1 x 3

inches. After unscrewing, the performer puts the screw in

the plastic bag.

My findings in this procedure is very easy. I mean

it’s the easiest part in this activity.

To remove the CD/DVD drives, first we unplug the

cables from the back of the drive. Once that is completed

we pull on the tab securing tab in place, then we push it

out from inside.

We found out that the CD/DVD drive has two screws in

it. Although it is not hard to pull as long as you follow

the procedure carefully. Some computers has a ribbon as a

connectivity from the motherboard. But this computer has a

cable only not a ribbon. Computer has a ribbon are those

old computers. And now a days they are using cables in it.

Hard Drive & Portable Hard Drive Slot

A hard drive is a data storage device that uses

magnetic storage to store and retrieve digital information

using one or more rigid rapidly rotating disks platters

coated with magnetic material.

Figure 6: Hard Drive & Portable Hard Drive Slot

First off, de-attach the connector at the back of the

slot, and unplug the other end from the motherboard. Also

unplug the SATA cable from the motherboard and the hard

drive. The portable hard drive slot is secured the same way

the CD/DVD drive is, with a screw. Unscrew it, and then

slide the slot out.

To remove the hard drive from the side of the slot,

unscrew the four screws securing it in place. You must be

COLLEGE OF INFORMATION AND COMPUTING SCIENCE

13

CAGAYAN STATE UNIVERSITY SANCHEZ MIRA CAMPUS |

very careful to not drop the hard drive, as it is very

delicate!

To remove the hard drive, the connector at the back of

the slot should be unplugged and also the other end that

connects it into the motherboard. Then unplug the cable

from the motherboard and the hard drive. Pull on the tab

and slide the slot out. To remove the hard drive, unscrew

the four screw securing it in one place and place screw in

the resalable plastic.

My findings in this procedure are, hard drive is a

medium size plastic and some kind of metal in it. And it

has a slot in it.

To remove hard drive, unplug the other end from the

motherboard. And unscrew it eventually so that we can pull

it out. This hard drive very important components in a

computer so we must perform it carefully without broking

it.

I found out that the hard drive and its slot has a 5

screws. 1 screws at the top the one that connected in some

case. And it has a four screw connected in the slot. We

just pull it out very careful. This thing is expensive.

Connectivity Center Cables

Computers are all about connectivity and loaded with

cables both internally and externally that allow data to be

exchanged between the computers components and peripherals.

Figure 7: Connectivity Center Cables

Most new computers have a connectivity center located

at the front of the computer.

The connectivity center is the area on the back/front

of the computer where there is many input sections, like

usb, firewire, microphone, headphones, video, etc.. I won't

COLLEGE OF INFORMATION AND COMPUTING SCIENCE

15
CAGAYAN STATE UNIVERSITY SANCHEZ MIRA CAMPUS |

remove the whole connectivity center in this step, but I

will unplug all the cables coming from it.

Do that (unplug all cables), then unplug the wires

leading from the power button, hdd light, and power light.

We will find the connectivity center the front

of the computer where many cables and wires are connected

in it. To do this, unplug all the cables coming from it.

Take some picture first from it from the area before

unplugging it, for you must have a guide when you’re

putting the cables back together.

My findings in this procedure is the

connectivity center has many wires connected to the

motherboard.

First thing to do is let some take some photos

in this procedure, connectivity center is a lot cables and

wires. Taking some photo in this procedure is very

important. It is servers as guide sooner. Unplug all the

connectivity center from the motherboard. If finish

unplugging, this cables are connected in front of the

computer.

I found that this is hard part because a lot of

wires I can see and it is hard to pull on the tab also.

RAM (Random Access Memory)

Random access memory is form of computer data storage

that stores data and machine code currently being used. It

allows data items to be read or written in almost the same

amount of time irrespective of the physical location of the

data inside the memory.

Figure 8: RAM (Random Access Memory)

The more RAM you have, the faster your computer runs.

Most computers have 4 RAM slots, and two RAM chips.

To remove the RAM, push down on both tabs holding the

RAM in place, which are located at both ends of the RAM.

Again have them secured in a safe place and put the screws

back. Clean the connector edges of the card peripherals by

rubbing the gold colored edge moderately with a rubber

eraser then brushing off the shredding.

COLLEGE OF INFORMATION AND COMPUTING SCIENCE

17

CAGAYAN STATE UNIVERSITY SANCHEZ MIRA CAMPUS |

Do not attempt to clean the edge by blowing or

brushing it off with your fingers. Our body is acidic and

you might only cause the edges to tarnish faster.

So pretty much, the more you have it the faster the

computer runs. To remove ram push down on both tabs holding

the ram in place which are located at the both ends of the

ram.

My findings is ram is easy to remove but we must

careful it because this component is sensitive.

Like the cpu and heat sink fan, ram is installed in

the motherboard before the motherboard is secured in the

computer. Before we uninstall it, let first push the both

side ends which locking the computer ram. After we do that

place your fingers to its high end and carefully pull.

Secure the ram in a place.

I found that the computer ram has many slots from it.

But this computer has only one ram installed in it. And

also upon pulling the ram is some sort of hard to pull, it

is tight.

Power Button & Power LED + HDD LED

The power button, power LED and hard drive LED are all

within a plastic "chasis". There is a zip tie holding the

wires/cables for the front connectivity center and front

power button/LEDs. Cut it.

Figure 9: Power Button & Power LED + HDD LED

To remove the chasis, press in on the tabs that are

located on the chasis' side and push them from the front

with a screw driver. Once the tabs are being pressed in,

pull the whole chasis out of the computer.

Not all computers may be set up like this, so your

computer will probably be different. Just use common sense

to find a way!

COLLEGE OF INFORMATION AND COMPUTING SCIENCE

19
CAGAYAN STATE UNIVERSITY SANCHEZ MIRA CAMPUS |

To remove the chassis, press it on the tabs that are

located in the chassis side. Ponce the tabs are being press

in, pull the chassis out of the computer. Power button is

located in the chassis. So it is important to remove the

chassis first.

My findings in this procedure is it is hard to press

the tabs. But you do that, it is easy for us to pull the

chassis out which the power button located in it.

There is a zip holding the wires and cables for the

front connectivity center and front power button led. Cut

it to remove the chassis, press it on the tabs that are

located in the chassis side. Once the tabs are being

pressed in, pull the whole chassis out of the computer.

The power button is a round or square button that

powers an electronic devices on and off. Nearly all

electronic devices have power button or switches.

I found that we won’t need to remove the button in

it; we just need to disconnect some wires connected from

the motherboard and power supply. We might capture is for

us to easily assembled it sooner.

Connectivity Center

Like I said in step 6, "The connectivity center is the

area on the front/back of the computer where there is many

input sections, like usb, firewire, microphone, headphones,

video, etc.". But this time, I will remove the whole

component, not just unplug the cables\wires.

Figure 10: Connectivity Center

First thing, unscrew the single screw holding it in

place. There might be a different amount of screws, in

different locations on your computer, but just unscrew them

all! One the screw[s] are removed, the whole component

should slide into the inside of the computer, which can

then be removed.

Not every computer has a connectivity center, but most

new ones do.

COLLEGE OF INFORMATION AND COMPUTING SCIENCE

21
CAGAYAN STATE UNIVERSITY SANCHEZ MIRA CAMPUS |

To remove the whole component unplug the wire first.

Then unscrew the single screw holding place. Once the screw

is removed, slide into the inside of the computer. Put it

in a resalable plastic bag to avoid troubleshoot.

My findings in this procedure are a lot of wires

connected in it and a lot of ports too.

Connectivity cables are highly colored bundles of

wires that branch out from the power supply. They provide

internal devices with electricity. The motherboard

connected in it. A stripe on the cable denotes the location

of pin.

Unplug the pata cable into the drive with a pin

indicator on the cable aligned in the pin indicator on the

drive connector. The pi indicator on the drive connector is

usually closest to the power connector drive.

I found out that motherboard have a pata drive

controller, providing support for a maximum of 4 pata

drives. Well just do this procedure patiently so you can

performed it successfully.

Motherboard

The motherboard links every component in the computer

together. The CPU, RAM, and expansion cards are attached

directly to it, and every other part of the computer is in

one way or another attached to it.

Figure 11: Motherboard

The motherboard has six or seven screws holding it to

the frame, which are indicated by large white circles

motherboard out of the frame.

The motherboard is well, the mother of the computer!

It is what links every component in the computer together.

COLLEGE OF INFORMATION AND COMPUTING SCIENCE

23
CAGAYAN STATE UNIVERSITY SANCHEZ MIRA CAMPUS |

Removing the motherboard is the last step in

disassembling the system unit.

To start it, the screw driver that was used by the

performer is 1x3 inches. In using the screw driver it

should be counter clockwise and you should have a force

because the screws are very tight. After removing the 6

screws, put it on a plastic bag. And lastly we lift it out

the motherboard from the frame.

My findings in this procedure is the motherboard has

so many wires and cables that are connected in it.

A motherboard sometimes called it mainboard, system

board, baseboard and logic board and many more. This is the

main printed circuit board found in general purpose

microcomputers and other expendables system.

First unscrew the 6 six screws then lift it out from

the frame. Put the screws on a safe place, we put it on

plastic bags or resealable plastic.

We found out that the motherboard is a last part in

this procedure. And it is the one to put it on first when

start to assemble it again.

I was born on a dark cold night

and under the bright shining stars in

March 28, 1997 in Anninipan Flora

actually The Holy Day and we call it

in Filipino “Mahal na Araw”.

Certainly that is the origin of my name.

And I go to School at Cagayan State University and a

course of Bachelor of Science in Information Technology. I

live with my Parents, Abraham and Luzviminda Laureta but as

I Studying, I’m leaving in my boarding house and just once

about going home. My Dad is a Farmer, and my Mom is a

Midwife. My brothers are Jeremiah and Genesis.

My name is Marc Christian Laureta. As I said before my

birth date is the origin of my name, Marc from the month of

March and Christian because Jesus Christ sacrifice Himself

at the cross. I finish kindergarten at the age of five and

I start in grade school when I was 6. My life in grade

school is unforgettable. Why? Because I’m a honored pupil

back then, top five only but its ok. I only have a few

friends because that life time, I’m not a friendly child.

But I haven’t experience bully back then. My friends are my

cousin only and relatives. And I’m not even close to them.

I just played with my younger brother or playing alone. At

that moment I started in love in anime and computer games.

So it is okay for me being alone. And as I recall my family

go to manila every December for a vacation. In fact, I just

stayed home with my gramps and keep our house safe. I’m

used to be alone but I’m still happy because my gramps and

my hobby never leave me. Same when I was in high school,

still not friendly but my old was increased. Unforeseen,

the adviser of campus rock band was recruited me for

joining their rock band. And I accept it without

hesitation. I really love music at that moment and until

now. My high school life was a moment that I would never

forget. I learned to smoke, drunk and many bad influence

and temptation I experienced. But the good thing is, in

this present day I never doing that again. When I was high

school I started to fall in love. But not a totally love, I

think it’s a puppy love. I’m not matured enough to do such

thing real love. I experienced about broken hearted, being

devastated and I learned something base on my experienced.

But that is life, we must experience about brokenness for

us to learn how to fight. And I graduated in high school

with many certificates and award.

I started to fall in love in Computer when I was

young. As I remember, I was seating on a bench near my aunt

typing in her computer. My aunt is an IT, she is a

Programmer in an agency which she is working. And as I

watched her, wow! She’s awesome, her fingers crazily typing

so fast. And another thing, she is not looking at the

keyboard. And I said to her, “aunt, I want become like you,

you’re so cool”, my eyes sparkling, and she replied “yup,

you will be” with a smile on her chick. So right now I’m

doing my best to fulfil that goal and other objectives of

my life. No matter how hard it is, a problem is just a key

for me to become stronger and it just gives determination

to pass through that mountains and valley in my way. And

the most important thing is the one who gives me strength,

the one who keeping me standing still and alive. God, I

thank him so much and I love Him till he come.
