Third female claims to be victim in Copes trial

Witness: ‘All I wanted was to be loved, and they threatened me’

Editor’s note: The following report in-
cludes details of alleged sexual battery of
children.
A witness in the sexual battery trial
of a former Palmer Home employee is
claiming to be a third victim of sexual
abuse, and there appears to be at least
one document to back up her story.
The female witness was the third to
testify in the trial of 45-year-old Seth
Copes. Copes and his wife, Kara Copes,
began working as house parents at the
Columbus children’s home in 2006, but
the couple was terminated from their
position in 2013 after teenage twin girls
pressed charges against
Seth Copes alleging he
sexually assaulted them
when they were 7.
The Dispatch does
not identify victims of
sex crimes.
The third witness,
now a 21-year-old wom- Copes
an living in Los Angeles, California, is
not biologically related to the victims
who pressed charges in 2013 but lived
in the same cottage with them when all
three were children at Palmer Home. She
is not listed as a victim in Seth Copes’
indictment, according to court records.
Seth Copes had only been charged with
two counts of sexual battery.
She testified to two incidents when

medical history in front of the jury.

8,716, a 139-vote margin, after
election day, absentee and affida-
vits were counted. Faver’s total is
good for 50.3 percent of the vote,
while Turner received about 49.6
percent.
The race remained too close to
call for much of the day, while the
counties processed 280 affidavits
— the bulk of which were tallied in
Oktibbeha County.

Smith’s victory in Mississippi’s
Senate election runoff was clos-
er than usual in the GOP-dom-
inated Deep South state. But
she still was never really threat-
ened by Democrat Mike Espy
in Tuesday’s contest, which
brought the state’s long histo-
ry of racial politics into sharp
relief.

Sen. Thad Cochran, returns to
Washington as the first woman
elected to represent Mississippi
on Capitol Hill:
Racial politics still dominant
In the end, Hyde-Smith de-
feated Espy by a margin of 54
percent to 46 percent — much
closer than the cakewalk many
predicted in a reliably red state
that President Donald Trump
won by 17 points in 2016. The
contest was the latest reminder
that race remains a potent fac-
tor in the region’s polarized par-
tisan politics. Espy was seeking
to become Mississippi’s first
black senator since Reconstruc-
tion.
Ahead of the runoff, a vid-
eo surfaced of Hyde-Smith
praising a supporter by say-
ing, “If he invited me to a pub-
lic hanging, I’d be on the front
row.” For many black voters,
the comment harkened back to
the state’s dark past of lynch-
ings during the Jim Crow era.
They were galvanized by her
remarks and saw their votes
as a rejection of racism. Many
whites dismissed accusations
that Hyde-Smith’s comments
were racist.
Her statement was widely
seen as a dogwhistle, similar to
comments made in Florida by
then-Republican gubernatorial
nominee Ron DeSantis, who
warned voters not to “monkey
up” the election by voting for
Andrew Gillum, who lost his
bid to become the state’s first
black governor. It also echoed
comments by President Donald
Trump, who cast Gillum as in-
competent and Georgia Demo-
cratic gubernatorial candidate
Stacey Abrams as unqualified.
Strong black
turnout not enough
Black voters came out for
Espy, but it wasn’t enough, giv-
en the overall makeup of Mis-
sissippi’s electorate and white
voters’ overwhelming loyalty to
Republicans, even among sub-
urban whites who elsewhere
nationally trended toward Dem-
ocrats in the 2018 midterms.
Espy’s biggest challenge
was simply that Mississippi
doesn’t have a metro area com-
parable to Atlanta or Nashville,
Tennessee, or Charlotte, North
Carolina — growing population
centers where white voters are
considerably more likely to
support Democrats than their
counterparts in small towns.
Yet even in Mississippi coun-
ties that fit the suburban model
— better educated, more afflu-
ent — voters stuck with Hyde-
Smith.

ter pressure to generate
electricity,” Wells said.
“The water pressure is
based on how high the
dam is, and the flow re-
cords give you an idea of
how much energy it could
produce. Once you deter-
mine that, you compare
that to the construction
costs it would take to
build, along with the op-
erating cots. It’s an eco-
nomic analysis.”

plants would operate by
using surplus water —

Our View
Hydroelectric studies at area dams generate interest
Since its completion in
1984, efforts to maximize
the benefits of the Tenn-Tom
Waterway have focused heavi-
ly on increasing commercial
traffic and, of course, recre-
ational opportunities.
But a Georgia civil engi-
neer believes the waterway,
more specifically its locks
and dams, can be used for
another benefit — producing
clean energy.
Jeremy Wells, a Coloradan
now living in Macon, Geor-
gia, has filed an application
with the Federal Energy
Regulatory Commission to
perform feasibility studies
at two areas sites – The John
C. Stennis Lock & Dam in
Columbus and the Aberdeen
Lock & Dam to determine if
either are suitable for con-
structing hydroelectric power
plants.
If granted the permit for
the study, Wells hopes the
results would support a power
plant that would produced
enough electricity for 5,000
homes from the Columbus
site and 3,000 homes from
the Aberdeen site.
Right now, it’s all con-
jecture, little more than a
dream.
Any study would have to
show that the costs of build-
ing and operating the plant
would be profitable, which is
the whole point of the feasibil-
ity study.
If that’s the case, we like
the idea for several reasons.
First, it’s a good use of a
resource already available,
producing clean, renew-
able energy by harnessing
the power of the water that
already flows through the
dams. Such plants would
not impede commercial or
recreational traffic and would
operate under the authority of
the U.S. Corps of Engineers.
There are hydroelectric
power plants in 34 states and
plans for four plants in north-
west Mississippi are nearing
the construction phase.
The primary objection to
hydroelectric plants are the
ecological impact of con-
structing the dams necessary
to generate power. Obviously,
that’s not an issue in this
case. The dams are already
here, so the ecological con-
cerns are no longer an issue.
The feasibility study is a
just preliminary step, so it
would be premature to sug-
gest that we will see hydro-
electric power plants at either
site in the foreseeable future.
But we applaud the effort
to examine the untapped
potential of the Tenn-Tom and
especially the idea of adding
another clean, renewable
source of energy at a time
when climate change has
emerged as the world’s prima-
ry environmental challenge.

outdoors all during the four seasons – hunting,
fishing or hiking the trails of his adopted state.
He built a beautiful country home for Carolyn
and himself outside of Dover-Foxcroft, where he
established many walking trails and enjoyed the
natural setting and the wildlife on his land. He
was a self-taught expert at anything he attempt-
ed, whether it be construction, identifying song-
birds or training dogs to accompany him on his
hunting trips. He enjoyed having family visit and
showing them the beautiful scenery and sights
that drew him to Maine. He always made time to
spend with the children in his family, no matter
how busy he was. His patience and calm demean-
or made him a favorite uncle of all and a beloved
brother-in-law, who could always be counted on
to lend a helping hand when needed.
He was preceded in death by his parents and
his brother, David Howard Blake.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Easley
Blake of Columbus; his sister-in-law, Pam Riley
Blake of New Jersey; his nephews, David Wal-
ter Blake of Indiana, Christopher Michael Blake
(Gwendolyn and their daughter, Phoebe Marie
Blake) and James Richard Riley (sons. Steven
Blake Riley and Nicholas Marion Riley); and his
niece, Amanda Riley Becker (Chuck and their
daughter, Riley Anne Becker), all of New Jer-
sey. He is also survived by his brother-in-law,
James William “Buddy” Easley, Jr. (Kathy); his
sisters-in-law, Frances Ann Hawkins, Glenda
Beard (Wayne) Rose Marie Coggins (Danny),
all of Columbus and Cynthia McGee (Forrest) of
Richmond, VA. He is also survived by his Easley
nieces and nephews, Carol Anne Stafford (Jim),
Angelia Lytle (Sean), Beth Hawkins (Chris),
Eddie Hawkins (Mary Helen), Phil Coggins,
Jeff Coggins (Jessie), Katie Santiago (Antho-
ny); great-nieces and nephews, Sarah Cantrell
(Oren), Taylor Cox (Corey) and Trey Hawkins;
and great-great-nieces and nephews, Cooper
Cantrell, Kendall Cox and James Coggins.
Although his presence is gone, his memory
will live on, with love, by all who knew him.

The third witness told
the jury of two instanc-

remembered Seth Copes

she said, occurred when
Kara Copes was out of
town.
The witness said Seth
Copes went into her room
while she was sleeping
and carried her to his
bedroom. She woke up in
his bed and ran back to
her own room.
She said she first told
the Copes’ 8-year-old
daughter about the inci-
dent.

The information, which
was not directly related
to the case, could have
colored the jury’s view of
the credibility of the vic-
tim’s testimony, Rogillio
argued.
“He was about to go
into real violations,” Rogil-
lio said. “There was com-
plete assassination of her
character.
“The jury’s heard it
now,” he added.
Kitchens, who raised
his voice when admonish-
ing Pavlinic, said the at-
torney’s question violated
the victim’s medical priv-
ilege, which the victim
had not waived. However,
Pavlinic disagreed.
“For the purposes of
the record, the statement
… did not come from med-
ical records,” he said.
He said he learned of
the incident from a sep-
arate conversation with
Copes’ wife, but Kitchens
said she would not have
been able to waive the
victim’s medical privilege
either.
Kitchens further al-
leged Pavlinic’s tactic was
“an intentional act to prej-
udice the jury against (the
victim).”
Pavlinic claimed that
wasn’t his intention.
“There is no way for
you to climb inside my
head and know that,” he
said.
Pavlinic is an attorney
with Maryland-based
Premier Defense Group,
an organization devoted
exclusively to defend-
ing those accused of sex
crimes.
After being sanc-
tioned, Pavlinic moved for
a mistrial on the grounds
that defense attorney Pat-
rick Rand of Richland,
who Copes also retained,
had not made the same
preparations for question-
ing certain witnesses that
Pavlinic had. Kitchens de-
nied the motion.
Rand will question wit-
nesses for the rest of the
trial.
The sanctions came af-
ter two days of testimony
during which prosecutors
repeatedly objected to
evidence Pavlinic wanted
to bring up, including al-
leged sexual behavior by
the victims as teenagers.
Kitchens ruled before the
trial that any evidence
about the victims’ sex-
ual activity outside the
assaults they reported
would violate Mississip-
pi’s rape shield law.
Kitchens had previous-
ly warned Pavlinic to ask
outside the jury’s hearing
if he had a question about
evidence after Pavlinic
made reference to one
of the victims “sexting”
during opening state-
ments on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, Kitch-
ens said after all those dis-
cussions, Pavlinic should
have known to approach
the bench before bringing
up the medical issues.

Even though several West Point
High School senior football players
were interviewed at different
times, each one came back to the
same phrase.
The quote was essentially “We
can’t be the class that doesn’t win a
championship.”
The seniors know what is stake
when West Point

West Jones (12-2)
at 7 p.m. Saturday
in the Mississippi
High School Activ-
ities Association
(MHSAA) Class

As tight end/tackle Ezekiel
Head put it, “This program is all
about winning championships. If
you miss (winning a champion-
ship) a year, you don’t need it to
be when you are a senior. We are
passionate about making sure this
gets done.”
West Point will try to win a 10th
state championship and its third
title in a row for the second time in
program history. West Point won
the Class 4A title in 1987, followed
by Class 5A titles in 1988 and 1989.
“Being able to win three
straight would be special for the se-
niors,” West Point senior defensive
back Ryan Melton said. “You don’t
see that. You don’t expect that. A
lot of people were counting us out
because we lost so many players
off last year’s team. However, we
have one game we have to win. We
haven’t done anything yet.”
West Point’s senior class enters
the game with a 42-2 record. Both
losses came in the regular season
to Class 6A foe Starkville. In Class
5A, Region 1 play, West Point has
reeled off 21 wins in the last three
seasons.

“It’s about winning. It’s about
tradition,” West Point senior safety
Tyler Rupert said. “We expect to
win. To a lot of people this year
may be a surprise, but it is not to
us. We have the expectation to
compete for championships. For se-
niors, this is your year. This is your
final year to play in the program.
You just don’t want to walk off that
field for the last time as a loser.
You want to celebrate with your
brothers.”
A year ago, Marcus Murphy
and Chris Calvert set the tone as
West Point rolled to an undefeat-
ed record and a convincing state
championship. The lowest margin
of victory in any game was 19
points.
This season, Hattiesburg (a sec-
ond-round playoff upset victim of
West Jones) had been the favorite
to win Class 5A. Many felt Olive
Branch would win West Point’s
region.
“Being under the radar has
really helped us,” West Point senior
running back Kameron Martin
said. “People didn’t think we were
the same West Point team. Ev-
erybody in our locker room knew
better. We knew our capabilities.
With all the pressure off, we have
been able to focus on becoming
a better team. I think the lower
expectations helped us not feel the
pressure but it also motivated us.”
While several members of the
senior class were united in a per-
sonal mission and a desire to build
the program’s legacy, each one had
a different viewpoint on the how
the season has come together.
Head believes the loss to
Starkville was the turning point.
“We had to work harder,” Head
said. “We had to do the little things
right.”
Senior tackle Jaylon Webb said
the turning point was a 34-33
region win at Olive Branch. The
Green Wave scored twice in the
final three minutes to snag the
victory.
“After that win, we felt like we
could do anything,” Webb said.
Melton felt like a 55-27 first-
round playoff victory against Can-
ton was when it all came together.
“It was a playoff game, and we
proved we were one of the best
teams in the playoffs,” Melton said.
After beating Canton, West
Point grabbed its second win of
the season against region rivals
Lafayette (27-20) and Olive Branch
(35-0) to reach the state title game.
While last season was a cake-
walk, this season has had its close
calls. The escape at Olive Branch
was followed by a one-point home
victory against Lafayette. The play-
off rematch against Lafayette was
also decided in the final minute.
“State championship teams usu-
ally have a few close calls,” Melton
said. “Last year was not normal.
We have been challenged and each
time we have proven we were up
the challenge. That’s the sign of a
good team.”

to No. 1. In 2014, the team
started first and finished
first but slipped to second
for two weeks.

“We are facing off with
a program that has become
the standard in our sport,”
said outgoing Garden City
C.C. coach Jeff Sims, who is
headed to Missouri South-
ern when the game ends.
“It’s an honor to be part of
this game for the first time
at a new location. It will be
great national exposure.
We are looking forward to
the challenge.”
Garden City is looking
for its second title in three
seasons. In 2016, it beat Ar-
izona Western College in
the El Toro Bowl at Yuma,
Arizona, to win its first na-
tional championship.
EMCC started its nation-
al title pedigree in the same
location. In 2011, EMCC
squad also beat Arizona
Western College in the El
Toro Bowl. From there,
EMCC won the Mississippi
Bowl in 2013, 2014, and 2017
for its other three titles.
The Lions’ first three
championship squads fin-
ished 12-0. This year’s squad
will try to do the same.
“Going back to back is
a big deal,” EMCC soph-
omore defensive back
JaQuez Akins said. “You
don’t see it that often in
sports. Once you win that
first title, it’s human na-
ture to want another. All
of the hard work in the off-
season, during the sum-
mer months, when it’s hot
outside —this is what you
are working for, this mo-
ment right here.”
The game will be a con-
trast of styles. Garden City
C.C. averages 307.6 yards
rushing per game. Charles
West (1,382 yards, nine
touchdowns) and Ded-
rick Mills (1,358 yards, 19
touchdowns) lead the way.
On defense, the teams
rank No. 1 (EMCC at 11.4
points allowed) and No.
12 (Garden City at 17.4)
nationally.
In addition to the televi-
sion contract, the NJCAA
has announced eTeamS-
ponsor as the title sponsor
for the game. The Crawford
County Convention and
Visitors Bureau has played
host to the week’s events.
“It’s a major develop-
ment for our sport,” Ste-
phens said. “The kids
deserve to be on national
championship. It’s anoth-
er great opportunity to
grow our sport.”
Built in 1923, Smith
Stadium has been recog-
nized twice this decade as
the top Division II venue
in the nation.

No. 4 Georgia football

Fromm said he sees
some of the same players
back from the Alabama
defense he faced at Mer-
cedes-Benz Stadium in last
season’s national champion-
ship game. Since Georgia
coach Kirby Smart is the
former longtime Alabama
defensive coordinator,
Fromm said the Crimson
Tide’s defense also reminds
him of the Georgia unit he
faces in practice.
“They definitely have
some returning players,”
Fromm said. “And they
have some really good
players. But schematically
they’re doing a lot of simi-
lar stuff they last year, very
similar to our defense. And
I think it’s just kind of very
similar to what we see ev-
ery single day in practice,
so hopefully we can be very
successful with that.”
One year ago, Fromm
was completing his fresh-
man season while relying
heavily on senior tailbacks
Nick Chubb and Sony Mi-
chel. Chubb and Michel
became the first Georgia
tandem to reach 1,000
yards rushing in the same

year later. D’Andre Swift
has topped 100 yards in

A slow start put the Bulldogs in danger of
not having a chance to extend that streak.
However, the Bulldogs pulled away with a
31-point second quarter and a 32-point third
quarter.
“Proud of how this team responded in the
second quarter after a poor first quarter,”
MSU coach Vic Schaefer said. “We have a lot
of respect for Little Rock. They were excep-
tional tonight and competed all the way to the
end. Proud of our third quarter. Back-to-back
quarters with 31 and 32 points shows you are
doing something right.
“We had a lot of kids shoot the ball well to-
night. Sixty points in the paint is a good num-
ber for us. They shot 50 percent in the fourth
quarter, and that’s not a good number for us.
We will learn from this and go on.”
McCowan had her fifth double-double of
the season secured by halftime. Anriel How-
ard barely missed a double-double with 16
points and nine rebounds.
Chloe Bibby followed with 15 points, while
Little Rock native Bre’Amber Scott had 13
and Conway, Arkansas, product Jordan Dan-
berry had 10.
Little Rock scored the final seven points of
the first quarter to take a 14-13 lead after one
quarter.
After the Trojans scored the first basket
of the second quarter, the Bulldogs took the
lead back on a layup by Scott at 17-16 with 8
minutes, 9 seconds left in the first half.
McCowan capped a 10-0 run with a layup
for the Bulldogs to give MSU a 27-18 lead with
5:53 left in the half. Danberry later capped a
7-0 run for a 36-23 lead with 2:30 left in the
half.
Danberry scored as the half expired, giv-
ing the Bulldogs a 44-30 lead at halftime.
An 18-2 run covered a five-minute stretch
in the third quarter. Howard scored back-to-
back baskets to cap that run and push the
lead to 69-38 with 3:48 left in the quarter.
The Bulldogs led by as many as 40 on
three occasions in the fourth quarter.
MSU will take on Texas at 1 p.m. Sunday in
the SEC/Big12 Challenge. The game will be
shown nationally on FS1.

Isaiah Wright led San Diego (5-2) with 23
points. Isaiah Pineiro added 21 points, but he
had only four points in the second half. Olin
Carter III had 19.
Ole Miss led 39-37 at halftime. Coach
Kermit Davis elected to put the Rebels in
the 1-3-1 zone to begin the second half. The
move forced several turnovers and allowed
Ole Miss to push its lead to eight. The Toreros
sliced their deficit in half before the Rebels
went on a 10-0 run.
Bruce Stevens added a jumper in the paint
to put the Rebels up 68-54 with 8 minutes, 33
seconds to go. Once again, San Diego cut the
margin in half but it didn’t last long as the Rebels
answered with a 7-0 run to grow their lead back
to 14.
San Diego cut the deficit to six down the
stretch, but Ole Miss converted from the free-
throw line to seal the deal.
Ole Miss will play host to Louisiana-Monroe
at 1 p.m. Saturday. For the first time, Ole Miss
will wear its new powder blue jerseys.

“We talked a lot before the game about pas-
sion and energy,” Southern Miss coach Doc
Sadler said. “Unless you do anything with
those two things, you aren’t going to be very
good. We had not played with passion and en-
ergy at all in the past three games for whatever
reason. The bottom line is it had gotten worse
with every game.”
Harper-Baker was 6-for-8 from the field
with nine rebounds.
Southern Miss sprinted to a 17-1 lead that
closed to 43-36 at halftime. When both teams
traded three-pointers in the first 43 seconds
of the second half, there was no turning back
from a classic.
The Jaguars took their first lead at 55-54
with 9:34 remaining. LaDavius Draine’s two
free-throws with 4:24 left put the home team
ahead 60-59, and it never trailed from there.
Holden knocked down one of his eight 3-point-
ers (on just 10 attempts) to get USA within 63-
62 at 2:26, but Southern Miss clamped down to
make it 68-62 with 33 seconds remaining.

road game: At Orlando, Florida, the Alabama
men’s basketball team will take on UCF at 6

bama and UCF have squared off on the hard-
wood. Last season, UCF earned a 65-62 victo-
ry at Coleman Coliseum.

Tagovailoa is joined as a finalist by

service efforts.
One of the top edge rushers on the squad, Green has been
a standout within the Starkville community throughout his time
as a Bulldog and is also a nominee for the 2018 Wuerffel Trophy.
Green has been involved with community outreach since his
freshman season, volunteering with projects like Read Across
America and other individual mentoring and tutoring projects.
Recently, Green has served as a mentor with Quad County Alter-
native School, heading tours of the football facilities on campus.
Carr, an outside hitter on the volleyball team, also was a
recipient of the award in 2016. She has lent a helping hand at
the Palmer Home for Children, Operation Gratitude, and National
Girls and Women in Sports Day youth event. She has volun-
teered at vacation bible school, at the health fair, and attended
Mississippi State M-Club Meetings. Carr is also a member of the
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Her efforts as a sophomore
earned her a spot on the 2016 SEC Community Service Team.
