ARCHITECTURE
Leon van Schaik AO, Professor of Architecture at RMIT University for 30 years and mentor to
countless Australian architects, lays down his highly influential creative philosophies in his latest
book, Architecture in its Continuums. The text represents a distillation of a lifetime of thinking
about architecture and the ways in which it is practiced, researched and taught. The book
remediates a gap that van Schaik sees in current architecture writing. There are, he says, 'very
few books on architecture that, I believe, concern the practice of architecture itself, as distinct
from the large body of writing about the history, sociology and environmental science of
architecture'.

Engaging both the skills of craftspeople and their century old methods, along with advanced
papermaking technologies, Washi - a traditional Japanese paper - is an art form in its own right.
Designer Eriko Horiki, utilizes and adapts the paper, playing with surfaces texture and light, to
create large scale installation pieces, interior walls and partitions. Here a collection of her works
created for restaurants, churches, museums and private clients are presented, accompanied
along with an examination of the manufacturing techniques used, and an interview with the
designer.

ARCHITECTURE
One of the first built projects of Eduardo Souto Moura, Casa das Artes was designed in the early
1980s and completed construction in 1991. The building is located in the gardens of a
neoclassical mansion in Porto, dating from the beginning of the 20th century. The competition
programme proposed a cinema, auditorium, an exhibition gallery, and required that the
surroundings be preserved as they were. According to the architect, "Work was not allowed to
interfere with the garden. Omitting was more important than proposing, deleting was more
important than designing, and simplicity more important than composition." This monograph
reflects his very minimalistic approach.
