well-site operations for System and Tool Configuration.

SureShot Tool Configuration and FID Programming

a. Power-up the Blade Server (ruggedized system) or Laptop PC (lite system).
b. Install MWD Interface Software on PC (PN 50017R0152). Accept all default prompts during
installation.
c. Install SIU Admin Software (50007R0166). Accept all default prompts during installation.
d. Remove the End Cap from the Tool String to access the communications connector.
e. Verify that the Black SIU & Encoder Interface Box is turned off.
f. Connect the RS-232 Serial cable to the PC COM1 Serial Communications Port and to the
SIU & Encoder Interface Box Host Computer Comm Port.
g. Attach the blue downhole System Interconnect Cable to the SIU & Encoder Interface Box
Note: The Encoder Comm Port and the communications connector are on the
downhole end of the tool.
h. Verify that all cable connections are properly attached before proceeding to the next step.
i. Power up the SIU & Encoder Interface Box.
j. Run the MWD System Interface Program on the PC.
k. The MWD SYSTEM CONFIGURATION SCREEN will open; check the following:
✔ Verify COM Port is set to COM1 in the File menu on the upper tool bar.
✔ Verify normal MWD Sensor Bus activity.
✔ Verify normal Node Status (No Red LEDs).
✔ Verify nominal Power Bus Voltage (30 to 36 volts). Record the voltage.
l. Configure the Tool FID Formats:
1) Press Configure System button to arrive at MWD Configuration Screen
a) Verify normal System Status (No Red LEDs).
2) For Tool Configuration, there are three options; You may load the configuration from a file
or directly from the encoder, or you may manually edit the configuration file.
If a previous FID Tool Configuration is to be used, then press the Load Configuration
From File button, select the desired configuration file and then proceed to Step 4. To
obtain the file from the Tool String, press Load Configuration From Encoder and
proceed to Step 4. If a custom Tool configuration is required, then proceed as follows:
a) Press Edit Configuration button
b) Press MPT Parameters button to view MPT Parameters Screen
c) Set MPT Encoding Type to TimeBase2
d) Set MPT Transmission Rate

e) Set MPT Transmit Delay (normally 32 seconds)


f) Set Inclination Threshold (normally 3 degrees)
g) Set Static Survey Delay (normally 24 seconds)
h) Set MPT Transmission Formats Be certain when setting Repeat, Resync and
LOOP BACK. LOOP BACK SHOULD NOT BE SET TO NONE

✔ Exit to MWD Configuration Screen when finished
3) Configure the power source and battery settings.
a) From the MWD Configuration Screen, press the Edit Configuration button.
b) Press Master Parameters button to view Master Parameters screen
c) Select your Power Source from the menu selections
✔ The battery switch thresholds have preset defaults, but can be changed if needed
4) Press Program Encoder Configuration button
5) Save Configuration To File button, enter file name, and save configuration so that you
are able to recall the file when programming the SIU.

Tool String Roll and Flow On Test

a. Ensure that the Tool String is positioned away from magnetic interference, placed on
relatively level ground, and securely supported on Jack-Stands.
b. Go to the MWD Configuration Screen and select Perform Roll Test.
c. Select the test type (45 or 90 degree rotation).
d. Note the “Results File” location where the Roll Test data will be stored or select your own file
location with the Browse button.
e. Enter “Roll Test Report Information” and Remarks into the forms.
f. Click the Start Test button to begin the Roll Test.
g. Rotate the string until the angle reads 0 degrees in the program. Alternatively, you can rotate
it to a convenient location to reference as 0 degrees and click Set Scribe Line.
➢ Note: Setting the tool's scribe line to high side is now performed in the Roll Test menu.
h. Follow the prompts to rotate the tool string and click the Accept Data button at each location
to collect Roll Test data points.
i. When the Roll Test is complete, click View Report to view the Roll Test report on the screen.

j. Click on the Exit button to leave the Roll Test program.


k. To print the report, go to the file location where the Roll Test was saved and open the file with
a text editor and print it.
l. To perform a Flow Test using the FlowStat™ Test Box, (P/N 60201 Black) attach the Flow
Simulation clamp to the FlowStat™ Sensor, power up the FlowStat™ Test Box, and start
simulated flow. If the FlowStat™ Test Box is not available, then perform a Tap test on the
FlowStat sensor. This may take 2 minutes to establish flow on. Ref : FlowStat™ Test

m. Monitor the MWD System Interface program Main Screen and verify that the flow on state
is detected. Located in the middle, on the right hand side of the screen
n. Verify that the Rotary Pulser is actuated.

Keep hands and fingers away from the Rotary Pulser Valve
Section when batteries are connected. Inadvertent and
unexpected Rotary Valve movement can cause serious injury.
Always install the Rotary Pulser Valve Guard whenever the Tool
String is on the Catwalk!

o. Monitor the MWD System Interface program and verify that the Power Bus Voltage (Load)
is nominal (30 to 36 volts). Top right hand side, of screen, record voltage.

Surface System Setup


Set up the SIU non-hazardous environment location
Install the Pressure Transducer as follows:
a. Verify that the Mud Pumps are stopped.
b. Close the required Standpipe valves to isolate the Standpipe Pressure Transducer installation
area from the Standpipe system.
c. Remove the Bull Plug from the Standpipe Pressure Transducer installation area.
d. Install the Standpipe Pressure Transducer in the Standpipe system.
e. Verify that the Standpipe Pressure Transducer is properly installed before proceeding.
f. Open the required Standpipe system valves to integrate the Standpipe Pressure Transducer
into the drilling fluid system flow.
g. Connect one end of the Sensor Interface Cable to the 6-pin connector onto the Standpipe
Pressure Transducer.
h. Run the other end of the Sensor Interface Cable from the Standpipe to the MWD System
Rack. (non-hazardous environment location)
i. Connect the Sensor Interface Cable to the Transducer connection on the back of the SIU.

Sensor Interface Unit Configuration Using the SIU Administrative Interface

REF; SIU Sensor Interface Unit MANUAL 10930 directly into SIU uses small
LCD screen
Program and configure the Sensor Interface Unit as follows:
a. Remove the End Cap from the Tool String to access the communications connector.
b. Verify that the Black SIU & Encoder Interface Box is turned off.
c. Connect the RS-232 Serial cable to the PC COM 1 Serial Communications Port and to
the SIU & Encoder Interface Box Host Computer Serial Comm Port.
d. Attach the Blue Down-Hole System Interconnect Cable to the SIU & Encoder Interface
Box Encoder Comm Port and the communications connector on the downhole end
of the tool.
e. Verify that all cable connections are properly attached, before proceeding to the next
step.
f. Power up the SIU & Encoder Interface Box.
g. Run the SIU Administrative Interface program on the computer.
h. A window will pop up and ask you to select the downhole tool type. Select “MWD Tool”.
i. Verify normal COMM Status OK
j. Press the Import Encoder Settings to make sure the MPT Rate and Type will be
matched. In the sample on the next page, the MPT Rate is set at 0.75 sec vs. the
1.25 sec that the screen shows as Yellow before the encoder settings are imported.
✔ Set MPT Type and MPT Rate to match the Encoder settings. Use the Import
Encoder Settings button, located at the top-right section of the window.
Press the Program SIU Configuration button. This will program the SIU with the new
configuration, applying any changes you have made in the administrative interface.

SWD SIU Administrative Interface program

SIU Administrative Interface Screen shows the Comm Status Box


When the box is colored Green the Serial Port is being used and Real time data can be
accessed.
When the box is colored Blue, the Admin Port is being used and the Firmware programs
within the SIU and the TOOL Encoder may be accessed.

Admin Port

The SIU Administrative Interface window contains six panels, plus Configuration Source information,
and Communication Status. Whenever the operator changes any parameters in the window, they must
press the Program SIU Configuration button for the changes to take effect. The new configuration
should be saved to a file by clicking the Save Configuration button. A saved configuration can be
retrieved by clicking the Load Configuration button.
Other items to check
a. Set the SIU Clock.
b. Set the Filter Mode to Band Pass (most circumstances), Low pass or Correlated
c. Verify the SIU and Encoder Format Tables match as follows:
1.) Go to the Main Screen Tool Bar and display the Format Tables screen as follows:
File → Format Table
2.) Verify that the mwdformat.cfg file matches the format table in the SIU.

SIU Administrative Interface Program

When done confirming formats Press the Return to main menu button.
d. Press the Save Configuration button, enter the file name, and save the configuration.
e. Press the Program SIU Configuration button.
f. Press the Exit button.

SureShot™ Control Center Program


The SSCC is the program that runs and stores the job information and presents the
data on plots reports and displays.

Post-Run Tasks
1. Tool String BHA Removal and Lay-Down
a. Fixed Mount Rotary Pulser System
Remove and Lay-Down the Tool String from the BHA as described in the Fixed Mount Rotary
Pulser Field Operations Manual – P/N 100857 (Chapter 4 – Tool String Removal).
b. Retrievable Rotary Pulser System
Remove and Lay-Down the Tool String from the BHA as described in the Retrievable Mount
Rotary Pulser Field Operations Manual – P/N 11002 (Chapter 6 – Tool String Removal).

2. Acquire Tool Post-Run Data


a. Verify nominal Power Bus Voltage (Idle, 30 to 36 volts).
b. Remove the End Cap from the Tool String to access the communications connector.
c. Verify that the SIU & Encoder Interface Box is turned off.
d. Connect the RS-232 Serial cable to the PC COMM2 Serial Communications Port and to the
SIU & Encoder Interface Box Host Computer Serial Comm Port.
e. Connect the other RS-232 Serial cable to the SIU ADMIN Serial Communications Port on the
rear of the SIU and to the SIU & Encoder Interface Box ADMIN Port.
f. Attach the Blue Down-Hole System Interconnect Cable to the SIU & Encoder Interface Box
Encoder Comm Port and the communications connector on the downhole end of the
tool.
g. Verify that all cable connections are properly attached, before proceeding to the next step.
h. Plug in and power up the SIU & Encoder Interface Box.
i. Startup the MWD System Interface Program on the PC.
j. Verify normal MWD Sensor Bus activity.
k. Verify normal Node Status (No Red LEDs).
l. Verify nominal Power Bus Voltage (Idle).
m. Record Pulse Counts
n. Record Battery Voltage
o. Record Circulating Hours

3. Tool String Post-Run Verification Roll Test


Perform a Tool String Post-Run Verification Roll Test. (See Page 4 of this manual)
