LESSON RATIONALE
Participating in creative assignments allow students to express emotions and provides an outlet for that expression. This lesson contains a
literary element which ties in content while also leaving room for self-expression. This lesson will also install a sense of pride into the
students and their community.
READINESS

A. Goal: Students will gain further understanding on the role they play in our community as well as the impact they can make now.
B. Objective: Students will learn from a community member how they beautify our community and demonstrate their understanding
through a self-created art installation.
C. Standards: VA:Cn10.1.2a: Create works of art about events in home, school, or community life.
2.W.3.2 Write a paragraph or paragraphs on a topic that introduce a topic, provide facts and details about the topic, and
provide a concluding statement.
Management Plan

student work, paper for writing rough drafts
b. Time anticipatory set- 10 minutes, mini lesson- 10 minutes, independent practice- 20 minutes, closure- 5 minutes
c. Space- student desks, tables
d. Behavior- Students can talk at a level one but need to remain in their seats. Students who cannot handle working with
others will be moved to sit by themselves.
II. Anticipatory Set
• Today we are going to read a book called You Can Be a Friend and it is written by Tony and Lauren Dungy, illustrated by Ron Mazellan.
We will read the book. This book features a young girl who is about to have a birthday party and has a crucial decision to make.
Does she have her birthday party at the pool (which she really wants to do) or have it a place where all of her friends can have fun
(including a friend who is in a wheelchair)?
Purpose: Today we are going to continue working on our art installations so we can move forward in adding beauty to our school
community.

PLAN FOR INSTRUCTION

III. Adaptation to Individual Differences and Diverse Learners
a. All materials will be pregathered and prepared for student use.
b. Examples of all techniques will be done in a whole group setting and then again with small groups.
c. Students who need help with writing will receive that during conferencing, but can also be grouped together at the kidney
table.

IV. Lesson Presentation (Input/Output)

 Okay my little doodlebugs! Yesterday we learned from Mr. Mazellan how he creates his illustrations and we started brainstorming for
what our art pieces will look like! Pull out your sketches. During this time I will conference with students about their ideas. When you
finish your sketch bring it over to me to look at. You guys are working really hard, it’s awesome. When you finish your sketch, I would
like for you to start working on your statement that describes what your art work is about. Everyone look at me. I will have an anchor
chart up to provide an example for them. You need to include what your art work is about, give it a title, and add your name. The title
goes on top and then ‘By: your name’, and finally your description. This piece is just as important as your art work because it allows you
to describe the meaning behind what you created. Students will be given time to free work during this time. I will continue to
conference during this time with students on their sketches as need, but focusing mostly on working on their writing.
V. Check for understanding.
 I will check for understanding as I conference with each student.
VIII. Review learning outcomes / Closure
Okay my doodlebugs, you have made it so far today on your writings. Tomorrow we are going to start our final art installments as well
as make corrections to our rough drafts.

PLAN FOR ASSESSMENT

Formative: I will be conferencing with each student and using a checklist that includes: name, title, 3-5 sentence description of their art
piece. The descriptive piece should include descriptive language, match the students’ drawings.
