ADVENT CAROL SERVICE
St. Nicholas’ West Tanfield.

 Today we remember ‘The Patriarchs’, Abraham our father in
faith, and David, Jesus’ ancestor in whose city he was born.
God of Abraham and Sarah,
and all the patriarchs of old,
you are our Father too.
Your love is revealed to us in Jesus Christ,
Son of God and Son of David.
Help us in preparing to celebrate his birth
to make our hearts ready for your Holy Spirit
to make his home among us.
We ask this through Jesus Christ,
the Light who is coming into the world.
All: Lord Jesus, Light of the world,
born in David’s city of Bethlehem,
born like him to be a king:
be born in our hearts this Christmastide,
be king of our lives today.
CHRISTINGLE
One of the enjoyable festivals of Christmas is the Christingle Service which is held in churches
and schools, often to raise money for the Children’s Society.. A Christingle is an orange that is
a symbol of the world, with a hole cut in the top, into which a candle is placed, to represent
Jesus bringing light into the world. Four sticks are stuck into the orange representing the four
seasons (or possibly that the light of Jesus shines in all directions). Impaled on the sticks are
sweets and fruits – a reminder of the fruits of the earth – or the good things that are ours
through knowing Jesus. A red ribbon is tied around the orange representing the blood of Jesus
shed for the world.
We will be holding four Christingle Services in our group of churches:

SNAPE CHRISTMAS SOCIAL
Saturday 8th December from 7.30 p.m. in Snape Institute. Mulled wine, finger buffet, mini
panto, table quiz, carols sing-a-long and more. In aid of Herriot Hospice Home Care. All are
welcome, so do come along. Tickets £8 from David and Elizabeth Lickess at Bridge House.

MASHAM SHEEP FAIR – help is needed with organising the stewards for the Flower Festiv-
al in the church. Becky Foster leads on this but would welcome assistance – if you are able to
help or would like more information please speak to Becky or the Vicar. Half of the proceeds
from the Flower Festival goes to the church, the other half to the Sheep Fair. Normally we
have about 1,000 visitors over the weekend so it is essential that the event is stewarded.
1 THESSALONIANS 3: 9 TO END
How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy that we feel before our
God because of you? Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you face
to face and restore whatever is lacking in your faith.
Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus direct our way to you. And
may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, just as
we abound in love for you. And may he so strengthen your hearts in holiness that you
may be blameless before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all
his saints.
LUKE 21: 25-36
There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on the earth distress among
nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will faint from fear
and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will
be shaken. Then they will see “the Son of Man coming in a cloud” with power and
great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads,
because your redemption is drawing near.’
Then he told them a parable: ‘Look at the fig tree and all the trees; as soon as they
sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near. So
also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is
near. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken
place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
‘Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunken-
ness and the worries of this life, and that day does not catch you unexpectedly, like a
trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth. Be alert at all
times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take
place, and to stand before the Son of Man.’
