Summary of Chapter 1
ACTIVITY 1.3

A 6-kg plastic tank that has a volume of 0.18m3 is

filled with a liquid water. Assume the density of
water is 1000kg/m3. determine the weight of the
combined system?
ACTIVITY 1.4

The volume rate of flow, Q, through a pipe containing a

slowly moving liquid is given by the equation:

where R is the pipe radius, ∆p the pressure drop along

the pipe, ℳ a fluid property called viscosity (FL T), and
the length of pipe. What are the dimensions of the
constant ∏/8 ?. would you classify the equation as a
general homogeneous equation ?
ACTIVITY 1.5
ACTIVITY 1.6
A thin 30-cm x 30-cm flat plate is pulled at 3-m/s horizontally
through a 3.6-mm thick oil layer sandwiched between 2-plate,
one stationary and the other moving at a constant velocity of
0.3-m/s. The dynamic viscosity of the oil is 0.027pa.s. Assume the
velocity in each oil layer to vary linearly, (a) plot the velocity
profile and find the location where the oil velocity is zero and (b)
determine the force that needs to be applied on the plate to
maintain the motion.

A 0.8-mm diameter glass tube is

inserted into kerosene at 20◦C.
The contact angle of kerosene
with a glass surface is 26 ◦ .
Determine the capillary rise of
kerosene in the tube.
ACTIVITY 1.8

Determine the gage pressure inside a

soap bubble of diameter (a) 0.2-cm
and (b) 5-cm at 20◦C
