Data Collection

With the aim to explain and describe the knowledge flow between R&D

institutions in China (Babbie, and Benaquisto, 2009), this research will utilize survey

method of data collection. The respondents of the study will be the selected top managers

of identified R&D subsidiaries in China. The instruments that will be used are self-

administered questionnaires and interview schedules. Moreover, publicly available

documents such as project records, meeting procedures, etc. will also be used for

document reviews to provide qualitative data. This is to support or cross-examine

information gathered from the survey.

Measurements

The measurements for this research will be based on the three types of variables

under observation: controlling variables, dependent variables, and independent variables.

Controlling variables are the ones whose effects are removed or controlled in the course

of the study (Punch, 2005). For this research, the controlling variables are subsidiary size,

industry and headquarters’ size. All subsidiary units are considered equal regardless of

the differences of their sizes. Independent variables are considered as the stimulus under

observation. These variables could either be present or absent (Babbie, 2009). The

independent variables for this study are: technology available and not available to the

units, regional and multinational innovation systems, government and private sector

support, funding, and other relevant resources. On the other hand, dependent variables are

the effects of the independent variables which are considered to be the causes (Babie,

2009). The dependent variable that will be observed is the efficacy or inefficacy of the

knowledge flow between different R&D institutions in China.

Statistical Analysis

For the statistical analysis, regression analysis will be used. It is a method of

determining the relationship between the variables. Specifically, linear regression will be

used to describe the direct relationship between the dependent and independent variables

(Babbie, 2007). At a more limited scope, the analysis shall focus on the interaction

between the recognized regional and multinational innovation systems and their effects

on the efficacy of knowledge flow in the field of R&D in China. The data will be

presented via regression model which will show the direct relationship of the variables

under observation.

Theories Building

With the objective to observe and describe the knowledge flow of R&D in China,

this study will do on a wider goal. That is, to contribute to the new economic model, trade

theories, and resource-based view of strategies applicable to region. In a much wider

perspective the observations will also be used to analyze and describe the phenomenon of

globalizing Research and Development efforts.

Timetable

For the first year of the research period, initial data gathering will be done. The

research instruments: questionnaires and interview schedules will be subjected to two

pretests before finalization. Pretesting should include gathering of respondent’s

comments about the instruments. This is to ensure effective communication which can

save time and other resources (Babbie, 2003). Actual data gathering will be done in the

next year of the research proper. Lastly, the third year will be devoted for analyzing and

collating the data, conceptualizing and finalization of the actual research write-up.
