Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Phases of the Moon

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 4th grade
Content Standard Addressed: S4E2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to model the
effects of the position and motion of the Earth and the moon in relation to the sun as observed from
the Earth.
b. Develop a model based on observations to describe the repeating pattern of the phases of the moon
(new, crescent, quarter, gibbous, and full).

Technology Standard Addressed: Empowered Learner

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Students will be able to interact with this academic game that is
structured like a quiz that is multiple choice. The Kahoot! can be used as an assessment, review game, or a
fun activity to get students to interact with technology in a whole-group class setup. This type of student
response tool can make learning fun for the students and they can enjoy what they are learning in terms of a
fun competitive game.
Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
The students will watch a video about the phases of the moon prior to the SRT activity. The students will then
engage in a conversation with the teacher about what happened in the video and what they have learned
that’s new to them. The teacher will then go over the different phases of the moon as a whole group which
was discussed in the video leading up to the SRT activity.
Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☒ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☒ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity: Each student will receive a tablet and they will
sign into it. After they have signed in, they will go to the Kahoot! app and type in the game code the teacher

has presented on the board. Once they are signed in, the students will start their 8 question quiz by pressing
the correct answer to the question. Each question will stay up for 20 seconds and the students will have that
much time to answer their question.
Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):
☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):
1. How many phases does the Moon have?
2. Where does the Moon get its light?
3. How often do the phases of the Moon cycle repeat?
4. What is the phase of the Moon when the Moon is between the Sun and the Earth?
5. What is the phase of the Moon when all the Moon is lit up?
6. What do you call a phase of the Moon when less than half of the Moon is lit up?
7. What do you call a phase of the Moon when more than half of the Moon is lit up?
8. What do we call a phase of the Moon when half of the Moon is lit up?
Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?
☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
I have pre-selected the correct answers and display them after the SRT activity so the students can reflect on
what questions they have missed. I will go over the questions that students have missed so when it comes
time for the test, students are aware of the right answer.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
The teacher will go over the questions that majority of the students have missed or if students volunteer to
ask certain questions to go over. Knowing what questions the students have missed is a great way for the
teacher to know what to go over next time on the topic. The teacher can also see the data from the Kahoot!
game and see which students were struggling and which were exceeding.
How will the data be used?
The data from the Kahoot! game can be used for the teacher to reteach and reflect on the students’
performance. Being able to see the data of each student can help the teacher see which students need extra
help with the topic and which students are doing fine with the topic. The data can also help the teacher
realize what needs to be differentiated in the content to meet the needs of all the students.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.
My personal learning goal for this activity is to make learning this content fun and competitive. I want the
students to be able to learn about the content using technology and being interactive with it. This student
response tool is competitive with the time limited questions and score board but I do not want the class to
get out of hand because of the competitiveness. I just want the class to stay engaged because it is
competitive.
Reflective Practice:
I think Kahoot! is a great student response tool to get students engaged in the content while having fun with
the game. Some students may get frustrated about the time limited questions and how it is competitive but
creating an environment where students know it is just a game can help. This activity may need to be
differentiated for EL students so I would add more time to the questions so they have time to read it.
