SPECIALTY FLOORING
1. GENERAL
1.1 Contract Documents
1.1.1 All work of this Section shall comply with the requirements of the Contract Documents
for the Main Building Works, with the Drawings, Schedules and with all other Contract
Documents.
1.2 Work Included
1.2.1 Supply and install gymnasium floor system
1.2.2 Supply and install hardwood flooring system
1.2.3 Jack-Up Floor
a) The supply, installation, testing, commissioning and maintenance of jack-up
floating floor system capable of being raised 50 mm for the Cineplexes and
Bowling Alleys all in accordance with the requirements set out in the
Manufacturer’s specifications.
b) Include all plastic sheeting, perimeter isolation boards, caulking compound,
riser seals, isolators, restraints and any ancillary items whatsoever required
for the implementation of the Contract works.
c) The Contract works shall be carried out strictly in accordance with the
Contract designs, Drawings and details, and any variation thereto.
d) The designs, details, planning and performance of the Contract works shall
be fully coordinated with all other works and activities inter-related therewith,
mechanical, electrical and other services, installations, building works and
architectural finishing works shall be fully considered by the Contractor when
planning, scheduling and executing his works. No claim whatsoever by the
Contractor in respect of the sequencing, programming and execution of his
works as and if affected by the activities and works by others will be
considered. The Contractor shall execute and complete his works having
due regard for the sequencing and scheduling of works by others in so far as
such works in any way have an effect upon, or are affected by the
implementation of the Contract works and the Contractor is deemed to have
included in his price, all necessary coordination, planning, sequencing and
inter-relating with the work by others.
1.3 Related Work Specified Elsewhere

1.4 Submittals
1.4.1 The Contractor shall provide written nomination of professional, technical and
supervisory expertise necessary to fulfil the Contract.
1.4.2 The Contractor shall supply prepared details for supply, installation and maintenance
for the whole system, to the Architect, which will include:
a) Load and deflection curves of all isolators;
b) Certification of the neoprene compound to the listed AASHO Specification;

c) Test data verifying the maximum dynamic frequency and damping at various
load ranges; and
d) Acoustical test data from an independent laboratory, showing a minimum
STC improvement of 22 and a minimum INR improvement of 25, using a 100
mm (min) concrete floor and a 50 mm air gap.
1.4.3 Shop Drawings
Submit shop drawings showing sections and details of the floor systems.
1.4.4 Submit 3 copies of “WSFI Care and Preservation of Your Wood Floors”.
1.4.5 Submit certificates attesting that the materials furnished meet with the specification
for grade, quality, dryness and treatment for the floor systems.
1.4.6 Samples
3 nos of samples (a) to (g) required.
a) a) Each type of material used.
b) b) 300 x 300 mm sample panel of each of the floor systems.
c) c) 600 mm2 6 mm plastic sheeting;
d) d) One isolator complete with jack-screws and neoprene isolator;
e) e) 600 mm long section of perimeter isolation board.
f) f) Caulking compound;
g) The Contractor shall provide temporary shuttering within a corner of the
Cineplex’s recessed slab to provide a 3 m x 3 m completed sample for
demonstration.
1.4.7 Qualifications of Specialist Sub-Contractors
Specialist Sub-Contractors, in order to obtain approval for doing the work shall:
a) Submit evidence of being bona fide operatives specialising in gymnasium,
sports hall and aerobic floor.
b) Submit evidence of having been in business continuously, under their present
name, for a minimum period of five (5) years.
c) Submit a list of minimum five projects of similar work the company has
completed within the past three years, giving the job location, name of owner,
owner’s telephone number, and dates on which the work was started and
completed.
2. PRODUCTS
2.1 Acceptable Manufacturers
2.1.1 Acceptable manufacturers, subject to compliance with specified requirements. Other
manufacturers providing similar and equal product will be given equal consideration.
2.2 Materials
2.2.1 Gymnasium Floor System
Surfacing for gymnasium floor shall be Dynapoint 109G Sports Surfacing or approved
equal conforming to DIN 18032.
a) Materials
i) 9 mm polyurethane rubber granular base
ii) Intermediate polyurethane sealing layer

iii) 2 mm polyurethane coating with top varnish
2.2.2 Multi-Purpose Floor System
a) Materials
i) The floor system shall be Biocushion maple hardwood flooring
system or Connor AGA Neo-Shok maple hardwood flooring system
or approved equal system. Use shall be approved by MFMA (Maple
Flooring Manufacturing Association) and tested according to DIN
18032, Part II.

100 mm onto existing floor screed.
iii) First grade maple tongued and grooved plus butt joint, size
600 mm length (minimum) 37 mm wide x 20 mm thick.
iv) 100 mm high x 20 mm thick maple skirting.
v) 2 layers of 12 mm thick CDX (all weather) plywood.
vi) 20 mm thick Biocushion Isolator pads or 2-stage Neo-Shok pads or
approved equal.
vii) 1 coat Robbins Miracle or Connor Miracle polyurethane sealer and 2
coats Robbins Miracle Finish or Connor Finish polyurethane coating
or Connor Finish (matt) or approved equal.
viii) Steel power nails
2.2.3 Jack-Up Floor
a) Plastic sheeting:
2 layers thickness 200 micron (min.)
b) Jack-up isolators:
Bell-shaped cast iron housings complete with 19 mm (3/4”) minimum
diameter steel jack-screws and maximum 60 durometer Bridge Bearing
grade Du Pont neoprene isolators having AASHO Table B properties as listed
below.

c) All neoprene isolation medium shall be designed to accommodate the
variation in loads imposed on the floor. The dynamic frequency shall be
maximum 15 Hz to minimum 10 Hz.
Multi-stage neoprene elements shall be used to accommodate the full load
range whilst operating within the specified natural frequency range. The
floating reinforced concrete floor thickness is 100 mm and the dead load of
the floor is 290 kg/m2 (min). The designed live load of the floor is 17.5 kpa.
A concentrated load of around 10,000 kg applied over a contact area of 350
x 350 mm shall also be accommodated. Under the later condition, a travel
limit utilising a noise stop pad is required.
Light-walled metal housings or isolation materials requiring protective
coatings are not acceptable.
d) Perimeter isolation board:
20 mm thick 160 kg/m3 fibreglass or 13 mm neoprene sponge.
e) Caulking compound:
Pouring grade, non-hardening, drying or bleeding.
3. EXECUTION
3.1 Installation
3.1.1 Gymnasium Flooring
a) Preparation of the Floor Surface
i) Lay PVC membrane waterproofing on the concrete slab as specified
on Section 07100 - Waterproofing and Insulation.
ii) Lay cement and sand screed as specified in Section 03700 - Pavior
over the waterproofing membrane.
iii) The finished screed surface should be kept dry, free of grease,
brushed free of all dirt, dust, laitance and loose materials.
iv) A primer is then applied over the whole screed surface and allowed
to cure for minimum of one day.
v) The surface is then checked for planeness, such that the gap
beneath a 4 metre straight edge does not exceed 3 mm in any
direction.
vi) Where depression exceed tolerance specified in item (v) above, an
appropriate self levelling compound should be applied to correct the
levels and be allowed to cure for a minimum of one day.

b) Installation of the Elastic Layer
i) A 2-component polyurethane glue is then liberally applied in area
where required.
ii) The 9 mm thick rubber granular mat is then unrolled over the glue,
making sure it is evenly pressed down without distortion.
iii) The rubber granular mat should be unrolled one lane at a time. Joints
in between the adjacent mats should be tight fit. Glue should be left
to cure for minimum of one day.
iv) A 150 mm wide fibre-mesh should be laid centrally along each joint
pressed down using 2 component polyurethane glue. This should
also be cured for a minimum of one day.
v) The 2-component polyurethane is then applied over the whole rubber
granular surface to seal off any voids and be allowed to cure for
minimum of one day.
vi) A 2-component polyurethane green colour coating is then applied to
a thickness of approximately 1.5 mm. Curing time should be
minimum of one day.
vii) A 2-component polyurethane Varnish (Oxide Green Colour) is then
laid and be allowed to cure for at least 2 days. During this process,
the room should be well ventilated with no naked flame, fire,
cigarette, lights, hot plate, etc within the premise as the fume is highly
flammable.
viii) Line markings of appropriate colours are then painted using
polyurethane paint.
3.1.2 Multi-Purpose Flooring System
a) Preparation of the Floor Surface
i) The surface shall be dry, free of grease, brushed free of all dirt, dust
laitance and loose materials.
ii) Should there be any gaps, they must be filled to floor level with proper
cement and sand mortar.
b) Damp-proofing Treatment
i) Apply by brush 1 coat of Aquaseal Primer or approved equal at a rate
of 0.15 litres per square metre and allow to dry for 1 to 2 hours.
ii) Apply by brush a coat of Aquaseal Primer or approved equal liberally
on all floor area at a rate of 0.8 litres per square metre and allow to
dry. A proper ventilated area will normally dry in 6 hours.
iii) Apply by brush a second coat of Aquaprufe or approved equal
liberally on all floor area at a rate of 1 litre per square metre and allow
to dry.
iv) The damp-proofing treatment should be carried 25 mm up the walls
both the coats of Aquaseal Primer or approved equal and the 2 coats
of Aquaprufe coating or approved equal.
v) The damp-proofing shall be allowed to cure for at least 12 hours. The
drying time will depend very much on the humidity and conditions of
the surrounding areas.

c) Cement and Sand Screed
i) Once the damp-proofing is sufficiently cured, lay a 25 mm thick
cement and sand screed over the entire floor.
ii) The surface should be finished smooth. The planeness tolerance of
the finished screed shall be as follows:

iii) The screed shall be properly cured for at least 3 to 4 days by constant
wetting. Thereafter, it should be left ventilated to allow it to dry for a
period of 7 days.
d) Robbins Biocushion Maple Hardwood System
i) Install polyethylene film with joints lapped 150 mm minimum.
ii) Install Robbins Biocushion Isolator pads 300 mm centres to centres
on lower plywood subfloor.
iii) Install lower plywood subfloor perpendicular to finish flooring
direction. All joints shall be staggered and spaced 6 mm apart.
iv) Install upper plywood subfloor diagonal to lower subfloor panels
staggering joints and spacing 6 mm apart. Secure panels using
adhesive and 25 mm staples placed 150 mm overall centres at panel
perimeter and 300 mm centres to centres through interior.
v) Machine nail maple finish flooring with end joints properly driven up
and proper spacing provided for local humidity conditions. Provide
50 mm expansion voids at the perimeter and at all vertical
obstructions.
e) Sanding
i) Sand flooring with drum sander, edger, buffer and hand scraper.
ii) Vacuum floor before first finishing coat.
iii) Apply one coat of Robbins Miracle Sealer and two coats of Robbins
Miracle Finish.
f) Game Lines
i) 50 mm wide lines shall be straight with sharp edges in red.
g) Skirting
i) Install Robbins maple skirting or approved equal using 25 mm long
finishing nails space 300 mm on centre.
ii) Mitre all joints at 45o angle, fill nail holes with plastic wood prior to
sanding and finishing.
3.1.3 Jack-Up Flooring
a) The Contractor will provide hoisting equipment, scaffolding, finishing tools
and incidental labour as may be required to complete the Contract.

b) Cement perimeter isolation board around all pedestals, walls, columns,
cubes, etc.
c) Cover entire floor area with two (2) layers of 6 mm plastic sheeting, returning
sheeting up perimeter isolation board.
d) Tape all joints of both layers with waterproof tape.
e) Position bell-shaped castings on a maximum grid of 1220 mm, in strict
accordance with approved Drawings and recommendations of the selected
Manufacturer.
f) Position reinforcement in accordance with Structural Engineer’s Drawings
and pour floor monolithically. Concrete to be power float finished.
g) Raise floor 50 mm by means of the jack screws. This procedure shall be
carefully executed under the supervision of the Manufacturer’s
representative and shall not stress the slab unduly.
h) Caulk perimeter isolation boards in all locations.
i) Grout jack-screw holes.
3.2 Inspection
3.2.1 The Contractor shall prepare and submit to the Architect, a full quality control
programme which, shall be properly implemented throughout the performance of the
Contract works. The Contractor shall also carry out or arrange to have carried out
entirely at his own cost, any test upon materials or workmanship comprising the
Contract works which may deemed necessary by the Architect. In the event that any
test or material or workmanship is deemed to be a failure, the materials or works in
question shall be removed and reinstated by the Contractor entirely at his own cost.

3.3 Testing
3.3.1 The Contractor will supply cube tests for the concrete to be used.
3.3.2 The Contractor will provide surveyed data to confirm evenness and level of the
finished floor.
3.3.3 The Contractor will test for an airborne noise rating of STC 75. The Contractor will
test for an impact noise rating of INR +25.
