Lesson Plan Guide

Teacher Candidate: Sydney King Date: 12-1-18

Grade and Topic: Kindergarten Math Length of Lesson: 30 minutes

Mentor Teacher: Townes School: U of M

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

● Student will be able to count by ones fives and tens to 100 with 95% accuracy.
LESSON OBJECTIVE:
● Student will identify specific reasons why skip counting is beneficial.
● The student will participate in the lesson and will miss out on fun activities until it is done.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
● Count to 100 by ones, fives, and tens. Count backward from 10 by ones.

MATERIALS:
● Skip counting work sheets, number cards, number charts, a skip counting sing-along from the internet,
flip book, dry erase markers, interactive whiteboard, laptop/iPad cart.
● If applicable, identify how and why technology will be integrated. Include a list of needed technology
and websites. If technology is being used for the creation of a product, include a sample of the product.

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

● Student will be able to count to 100 by ones, fives, and tens.
● Mathematical language
● Student is building on counting. Student has mastered counting by ones. Skip counting is building on
level of difficulty and comprehension by counting by fives and tens.
● Learning this skill will build on learning multiplication facts and every day math usage.
● I will need to plan differentiated activities because students learn in different ways. One of the few
games and activities should be able to reach every student.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

● Introduction: The student will begin the lesson by watching a skip counting sing-along video on the
Internet.
● Procedures: The teacher will have a number chart. While the song is playing in the background, the
student will sing along while the teacher points to the numbers on the chart. This is so the student can
visualize the pattern of skip counting. Once the teacher and the student have sung the song a 3 times, the
teacher will get an interactive game ready. The student will play/work the game on an interactive
whiteboard with help from peers. Then the student will then use a web 2.0 tool to keep practicing skip
counting. Once the interactive game and the web 2.0 activities are completed, the student will complete
a fill in the blank quiz. It will be in the form of a laminated flipbook. It will have a sequence of numbers
with some numbers missing. The student will have to fill in what number is missing in the skip counting
sequence with a dry erase marker. The teacher will come around and check the student’s work and help
as needed. There will be 5 number sequences for the student to figure out each with increasing level of
difficulty.
● Closure: The student will listen to and sing along with the skip counting song again.
ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:
● Summative: The student will complete the fill in the blank flipbook. The teacher will check for accuracy.
● Formative: The student will complete the interactive game and web 2.0 activities with guidance from
teacher and peers if needed.

MODIFICATIONS:
● For students who need more practice, the teacher will provide work sheets for repetitive practice.
● I am aware that modifications will be made for students who did not master the objectives and for
those ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not
part of this particular lesson.
