Modal Review Lesson Plan

Goals
 For me to learn a little bit more about each individual student
 To encourage cross cultural interaction and a free expression of ideas while
making use of the modals learned in previous classes

Objectives:
 To build a broader understanding of how modals are used and why
 To practice the use of modals via questions and opinions
 To discuss cultural differences and similarities in English

Materials:
 Activity instructions via PowerPoint
 Interview questions worksheet
 Controversial statements worksheet
 Modal videos with subtitles (Use in Film and Television)
 Whiteboard markers

Procedure:
1. Greeting and introduction, remind class of unit we are on (Modals)
2. Warm-up (10 min): Get students to write two things I should know about them or
their culture on a piece of paper as well as 1 thing they would like to know about
me using modals then hand it in to me. I will then read what they would like me
to know about them to the class and answer their questions to the best of my
ability. Description of exercise will be provided via PowerPoint.
3. Activity 1 (20 min) Partner interview with Modals; Assign random partners and
provide a list of interview questions for students to ask their partners. Instruct
students to write down answers to each question on their worksheets. Upon
completion, pairs will share 1 or 2 interesting things they have learned about each
other. Interview Worksheet Provided.
4. Activity 2 (20 min) Controversial Statements: Break the class up into 5 groups
and assign each group 1 controversial topic that they must discuss with their
group and decide whether they agree/disagree/unsure and why. After an allotted
amount of time, groups will present their opinions to the class. Topics and
instructions will be provided via a worksheet as well as examples of possible
statements via PowerPoint.
5. Conclusion (If time permits) (10 min) Show a few quick videos of modals in use
in film and television. After each video ask the students to identify the modals
being used and why, subtitles enabled to make exercise easier. Finish the lesson
with a word of the day. Today’s word is Macabre, explanation will be provided.
Evaluation:
 Informal evaluation of writing done through the reading and correcting of the
students warm up exercise.
 Informal evaluation/monitoring of speaking as teacher goes around the room
monitoring group and pair discussions of activity 1 and 2.
