Adverb Clauses Lesson Plan

Goals:
 Students will be able to describe past events and identify how adverb clauses are
formed and used as well as their different meanings.
 Students will practice their writing and reading while making use of adverb clauses.

Objectives:
 To build an understanding of what an adverb clause is and how it is used in the
English language.
 To practice writing and reading as well as identification of adverb clauses within
sentence structure.

Materials:
 PowerPoint explaining warm up and adverb clauses with examples of their usage.
 Kahoot quiz with at least 10 questions. https://play.kahoot.it/#/k/cbdecd44-e677-4fff-

 Fill in the blank worksheet.
 Grammar Textbook.
 Complete the clause activity worksheet
 Whiteboard and felt pens

 Warm-up: Describe your daily routine; (10-15 min)


1. T. greets students and begins class with a short explanation of what an adverb clause
is, paying special attention to modes and especially time. Information provided via
PowerPoint.
2. T. then instructs SS. to write a short paragraph of at least 5 sentences describing a
daily routine. Ex. What I do every morning: before I go to bed, I brush my teeth etc.
3. After an allotted amount of time T. asks students at random to present a
few sentences, correcting and assisting as need be.
4. T. then continues explanation of the different types of adverb clauses via PowerPoint
leading into the first worksheet activity.

 Activity 1: Fill in the blank and identify meaning worksheet; (20 min)
1. T. hands each student a worksheet with several sentences containing blank spaces that
the students must fill in with subordinating conjunctions.
2. The students must also identify the meaning behind each sentence within the blank
space located next to each sentence.
3. A list of meanings as well as subordinating conjunctions will also be provided with
the worksheet.
4. When SS. are finished T. will go through answers via overhead projector.
 Activity 2: Kahoot Review; (15 min)
1. Students sign into Kahoot using pin on overhead to play the review game.
2. Questions will be pertaining to what is the proper conjunction to use in the provided
sentences or what is the meaning behind each clause.
3. Will go through at least 10 questions.

Break (10min)

 Activity 3: Complete the clause; (10 min)


1. Students are to work in the groups they are already in to complete this exercise.
2. Each group is handed a list of basic sentences such as: Gail danced, Bob fed the dog.
etc
3. It is then the students objective to work together to modify these sentences using
adverb clauses.
4. Example answers: Gail danced whenever she got an 'A' on her paper. Bob fed the
dog when the dog brought its dish to him.
5. After an allotted amount of time groups are called to present a few of their answers.

 Activity 4: Textbook reading pg. 282;(20 min)


1. SS. are to read the article on page 282 of their textbook and answer a few
comprehension questions.
2. While reading SS. are to identify the subordinating conjunctions in the sentences
containing adverb clauses.
3. When finished reading and identifying SS. are to answer and discuss several opinion
related questions with those sitting next to them.

 Activity 5: Combine Sentences textbook Pg. 290; (20 min)


1. SS. are to complete Exercise 3 on page 290 of their textbook where they must
combine two sentences into and adverb clause utilizing the subordinators provided at
the top of the page.
2. T. goes through answers with students upon completion via overhead projector. (Only
do exercise if time permits as Activity 4 may take up most of class time.)

 Evaluation:
1. Informal evaluation/monitoring of SS. as T. goes around classroom and observes SS.
during exercises.
2. Informal evaluation of SS. speaking as T. asks for answers from SS.
