1. Quality Control Vs Quality Assurance

Definitions:

Quality Assurance (QA) refers to the process used to create the deliverables,

and can be performed by a manager, client, or even a third-party reviewer.

Examples of quality assurance include process checklists, project audits and

methodology and standards development.

Induction Training to TSPSC 2018 Batch Asst Exe Engineers in Tribal Welfare Engineering Dept 1 st Aug 2018 to 7th Sep 2018

1. Quality Control Vs Quality Assurance

Definitions:

Quality Control (QC) refers to quality related activities associated with the

creation of project deliverables.

Quality control is used to verify that deliverables are of acceptable quality

and that they are complete and correct.

Examples of quality control activities include inspection, deliverable peer

reviews and the testing process.

Induction Training to TSPSC 2018 Batch Asst Exe Engineers in Tribal Welfare Engineering Dept 1 st Aug 2018 to 7th Sep 2018

1. Quality Control Vs Quality Assurance

Definitions:

Quality control is about adherence to requirements. Quality assurance is

generic and does not concern the specific requirements of the product being

developed.

Quality assurance activities are determined before production work begins

and these activities are performed while the product is being developed.

In contrast, Quality control activities are performed after the product is

developed.

Test to Justify the Qualities of Brick

1. Compressive strength test
This test is done to know the compressive strength of brick. It is also called crushing
strength of brick. Generally 5 specimens of bricks are taken to laboratory for testing
and tested one by one. In this test a brick specimen is put on crushing machine and
applied pressure till it breaks. The ultimate pressure at which brick is crushed is
taken into account. All five brick specimens are tested one by one and average
result is taken as brick’s compressive/crushing strength.

3. Quality Control in Building Works

Test to Justify the Qualities of Brick

2. Water Absorption test
In this test bricks are weighed in dry condition and let them immersed in fresh
water for 24 hours. After 24 hours of immersion those are taken out from water and
wipe out with cloth. Then brick is weighed in wet condition. The difference
between weights is the water absorbed by brick. The percentage of water
absorption is then calculated.
The less water absorbed by brick the greater its quality. Good quality brickdoesn’t
absorb more than 20% water of its own weight.
Induction Training to TSPSC 2018 Batch Asst Exe Engineers in Tribal Welfare Engineering Dept 1 st Aug 2018 to 7th Sep 2018

3. Quality Control in Building Works

Test to Justify the Qualities of Brick

3. Efflorescense test
The presence of alkalies in bricks is harmful and they form a gray or white layer on
brick surface by absorbing moisture. To find out the presence of alkalis in bricks this
test is performed. In this test a brick is immersed in fresh water for 24 hours and
then it’s taken out from water and allowed to dry in shade.
If the whitish layer is not visible on surface it proofs that absence of alkalis in brick.
If the whitish layer visible about 10% of brick surface then the presence of alkalis is
in acceptable range. If that is about 50% of surface then it is moderate. If the
alkalis’s presence is over 50% then the brick is severely affected by alkalies

3. Quality Control in Building Works

Test to Justify the Qualities of Brick

4. Hardness test
In this test a scratch is made on brick surface with a hard thing. If that doesn’t left
any impression on brick then that is good quality brick.
5. Size, shape and color test
In this test randomly collected 20 bricks are staked along lengthwise, widthwise and
heightwise and then those are measured to know the variation of sizes as per
standard. Bricks are closely viewed to check if its edges are sharp and straight and
uniform in shape. A good quality brick should have bright and uniform color
throughout.

3. Quality Control in Building Works

Test to Justify the Qualities of Brick

6. Soundness test
In this test two bricks are held by both hands and struck with one another. If the
bricks give clear metallic ringing sound and don’t break then those are good quality
bricks.
7. Structure test
In this test a brick is broken or a broken brick is collected and closely observed. If
there are any flows, cracks or holes present on that broken face then that isn’t
good quality brick.

Test to Justify the Qualities of Sand

Following are the tests for sand at construction site:

1.Organic impurities test – this test is conducted at the field, for every 20 cum or
part thereof.
2. Test for Silt Content Test of Sand
The maximum quantity of silt in sand shall not exceed 8%. Fine aggregate containing
more than allowable percentage of silt shall be washed so as to bring the silt content
within allowable limits.

Test to Justify the Qualities of Sand

Following are the tests for sand at construction site:

3. Test for Grading of sand
On the basis of particle size, fine aggregate is graded into four zones. Where the
grading falls outside the limits of any particular grading zone of sieves, other than 600
micron IS sieve, by a total amount not exceeding 5 percent, it shall be regarded as
falling within that grading zone.

Test to Justify the Qualities of Sand

Following are the tests for sand at construction site:

3. Test for Deleterious materials in sand

Sand shall not contain any harmful impurities such as iron, pyrites, alaklies, salts, coal
or other organic impurities, mica, shale or similar laminated materials, soft
fragments, sea shale in such form or in such quantities as to affect adversely the
hardening, strength or durability of the mortar.
The maximum quantities of clay, fine silt, fine dust and organic impurities in the sand
/ marble dust shall not exceed the following limits:
(a) Clay, fine silt and fine dust when determined in accordance within not more than
5% by mass in IS 2386 (Part-II), natural sand or crushed gravel sand and crushed stone
sand.
(b) Organic impurities when determined in colour of the liquid shall be lighter in
lighter in accordance with IS 2386 (Part –II) than that specified in the code.

Test to Justify the Qualities of Sand

Following are the tests for sand at construction site:

4. Test for Bulking of sand

Fine aggregate, when dry or saturated, has almost the same volume but dampness
causes increase in volume. In case fine aggregate is damp at the time of proportioning
the ingredients for mortar or concrete, its quantity shall be increased suitably to
allow for bulkage.
Table below gives the relation between moisture content and percentage of
bulking for guidance only.

Moisture content (%) volume)

3 20
4 25
5 30
