Lesson Plan Guide

Teacher Candidate: Shelley Weaks Date: 12/2/2018

Grade and Topic: 7th grade science Length of Lesson:

Mentor Teacher: Annette Cornelius School: University of Memphis

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

● What are the cell organelles and their roles?
LESSON OBJECTIVE:
● Given a list of cell organelles, the student will describe the role of each organelle with 85% accuracy.
● The student is expected to research the roles of cell organelles and create a PowerPoint presenting at least 7
organelles including the roles and a graphic of each organelle. The students will be expected to share one
organelle from their PowerPoint and discuss what it does and why it is their favorite. The students will be
expected to take a quiz on cell organelles.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
● 7.LS1: From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes
● 1) Develop and construct models that identify and explain the structure and function of major cell
organelles as they contribute to the life activities of the cell and organism.
MATERIALS:
● Computer
● Microsoft PowerPoint
● Paper and Pencil
● Cell Organelles worksheet
● Science textbook
● Internet Access to
○ ASU cell parts: https://askabiologist.asu.edu/cell-parts
○ Cell Organelles: http://www.edu.pe.ca/gray/class_pages/rcfleming/cells/notes.htm

○ Kids Biology Cell Organelles: https://kidsbiology.com/biology-basics/cell-organelles/
● Students will use the listed websites to get graphics of cell organelles to make a PowerPoint with images and roles
of each organelle. The finished PowerPoint will be submitted to a dropbox.
BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:
● What are the roles of major cell organelles and what do they look like?
● Academic Language is not addressed in IDT 3600.
● This lesson continues the study of the structure of cells and living organisms.
● The subsequent lessons will build on how cells work together as tissue and organs.
● I am aware that the lesson will be differentiated for students who did not master the objectives and for
those ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of
this particular lesson.
PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:
● Introduction:
Did you know that 40,000 white blood cells can fit on the head of a pin? Cells are so tiny and there are so
many in your body. There are even smaller things that go inside of each cell! Today we are going to
research these tiny things called organelles. There are things even smaller than them, but we will talk
about organelles today. Each kind of organelle has it’s own job in the cell, like making protein or energy.
Your first task is to fill out this sheet with information about organelles. I have some websites posted for
you to find the information and you can also look in your textbook or ask me about them. Once you find
out what each organelle’s job is, you will each make a powerpoint with 7 of your favorite organelles
including the role and a graphic from the websites of each one. After that, you will tell the class about
your favorite organelle. Make sure you know what all the organelles do because we will take a quiz at the
end of this assignment.
● Procedures: Provide a sequential (step by step) description of the procedures and activities for the
lesson.
Include approximate times with each step of the lesson.
For each activity, include directions you may need to give or key questions you intend to ask,
possible alternatives to the activity, or examples.
Describe how you will differentiate for students with different learning needs or backgrounds.
If technology is being used, identify a rotation plan and supporting activities.
Activity 1
Prior to the computer
1. The teacher will distribute the cell organelle worksheet

At the Computer
1. The teacher will direct the students to the listed websites
2. The students will use the information on the websites to fill in the worksheet
3. The students will save images of each organelle from the websites to the computer

After the Computer

1. The students will divide into groups of four or five and discuss the information they wrote on their worksheets.
They will discuss the answers to the blanks and which organelles they think are the most important or interesting.
2. The teacher will visit each group and clarify any misinformation or questions

Activity 2
Prior to the computer
1. The teacher will display graphics of plant and animal cells with each organelle labeled on the smartboard in print
form
2. The students will decide which 7 organelles to make a PowerPoint presentation on

At the Computer
1. The teacher will direct the students to open Microsoft PowerPoint on the computers
2. The students will create a PowerPoint that has he images and roles of at least ten major organelles
3. The students will submit their completed PowerPoints to the class dropbox

After the Computer

1. The teacher will open each PowerPoint on the smartboard computer
2. Each student will open their PowerPoint to the slide with their favorite organelle and tell the class what it does
and why it is their favorite
3. Students will submit their Cell Organelle worksheet to the teacher

● Closure: After the presentations, the students will complete a quiz in which they must match the role to
the organelle

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:
● Students submit a PowerPoint presentation and a worksheet and they take a quiz

● I am aware that modifications will be made for students who did not master the objectives and for those ready for
enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of this particular lesson.
