1. INTRODUCTION

Stabilizing factor for selective busbar (bus zone) diff. protection – STAB FAC:BZ
For the determination of stabilizing factor k the following has been considered:
a) The possible setting range for k-factor refers to: 0.0…0.8.
b) The CTs overburdening factor for the smallest CT ratio (3000/1, K’ssc ~91) equals to Kob
=Isc,max/(Ipn x K’ssc) = 40kA / (3000A x 91) = 0.147 (i.e. Kob <1)
c) Therefore, acc to our experience, in this case, the k-factor should be chosen as follows:
Differential current threshold for selective busbar (bus zone) diff. protection – Id>BZ

The rated current for the 132kV switchgear is 3000A. The busbar protection should not be activated
with this current. On the other hand, the busbar protection should be activated for a minimum internal
short-circuit fault (Ik,min,int):
Acc. to the data the minimum internal fault current Ik,min, int at the busbar, will be Ik,min2pol =~6
kA.
A primary fault setting above 120% of the max. rated current for the coupler is proposed.
1.2 x 3000A = 3600A → taking 3900A as a primary setting, it leads to a secondary setting by the
usage of 3000/1A CTs in the bus coupler (nominal current of the object set to 3000A) as follows:
→ 3900 / (3000A/A) = 1.3
Therefore, the following is recommended:
Stabilizing factor and differential current threshold for overall busbar (check zone) diff. protection – STAB
FAC:CZ and Id>CZ
Tripping of an internal fault will be blocked until both, selective busbar differential protection and
check-zone detect an internal fault (2 out of 2 logic). For this reason the stabilizing factor of the
check-zone should be selected at least as sensitive as or even more sensitive as the previous
mentioned stabilizing factor for selective busbar differential protection.
In this case of multi-busbar, we propose to set the settings for check zone as follows:
If there is a differential current greater than the supervision value and longer than the time delay, the
protection will be blocked. The supervision signal may be a sign for unhealthy CTs or wiring.

5.2 BREAKER FAILURE PROTECTION (50BF): 7SS52
For the breaker failure protection the function integrated in 7SS52 relays is used.
5.2.1 Settings calculation for Breaker Failure Protection 50BF
The task of circuit–breaker failure protection is to clear faults that were identified by the allocated
protection but not cleared by the assigned circuit–breaker due to its failure.
The parameter xx14 (xx= Bay Unit Number) should remain on default value, but the applied binary
inputs of BF–initiation must be checked during commissioning.
The settings xx18 and xx19 refer to the CT ratio installed at the corresponding feeder.
The total breaker failure clearing time should be smaller than the second zone time delay of the upstream
distance relays at remote-end substations (if available). So that in a case of busbar fault, first breaker failure
protection operates and then the second zone backup of the distance relays.
The accordance of the parameters to the realized wirings and configuration must be checked during
commissioning.
# Especially the parameter “T-CB open” has to be set during commissioning. It is used to delay processing of
the circuit breaker open status for special treatment of the coupler currents (and for the end fault protection).
The parameter considers the time delay of the opening time of the auxiliary contacts in comparison to the
circuit breaker contacts. It should be ensured, that the time is longer than the time difference of the opening of
the auxiliary contacts in comparison to the opening of the circuit breaker contacts.

Thereby, the parameter related to the direction of the star-point of the CTs and the angle correction of the VT’s
should be checked and adjusted during commissioning.
Power System Data 1; Group Breaker
The parameters concerning circuit breaker can be left as default values. They should be checked or/and adjusted
during commissioning of the switchgear according to respective wiring scheme and customer’s practice.
Differential Protection; Group General
The differential function (1201) must be activated by the parameterization. The relay is delivered in inactive-
circuit state. This is because the relay may not be operated without having at least set the vector group and
matching factors correctly first. In such circumstances the relay may act unpredictably. The differential function
(1201) must be activated by the end of the relay parameterization.

For the parameter 1271 a lower value (e.g. 10%) can be set for greater stabilization in exceptional cases under
unfavorable energizing conditions resulting from the design of the transformer. Here, the typical setting of 15%
is proposed.
In order to have a good compromise between high stabilization during inrush and tripping time below 100ms if
there is an internal fault during inrush, the duration of the cross-block function with the 2nd harmonic should be
set to 5 periods (1272A).

8.1.1 Relevant data for settings calculation; CT relevant data
In this case the distance protection (21, 21N) acts as a backup protection for the following lines and substations.
Therefore, the higher zones act as a backup following the state-of-art grading principles of the step-distance
protection. The instantaneous protection for the own cable is done by the two differential protection functions.
Calculation of relevant primary data
For the setting of the relays the following quantities shall be calculated using the given primary system data:
Minimum load impedance for maximum load ZLOADmin
max. cont. permiss. thermal current = 1200A (CT primary current)
Maximum Angle = 45 degree (assumed!)
Minimum Voltage Umin = 0.90 x Un = 119kV (assumed!)
Maximum Load Current at min. service voltage = 1200A (assumed!)
The minimum load impedance can be calculated by = 119*0.8/(√3*1200) = 45.8 Ω (Primary), = 45.8 x 1Ω =
45.8 Ω (Secondary).
The setting procedure consists of determining the functions that are to be used and the settings of the protective
functions that have been enabled.
The parameterization of the digital distance relay 7SA522 will be done according to the parameter blocks as
given in DIGSI. Secondary impedance values will be used.

Zero Sequence Compensation Factor XE/XL:
Here, on the one hand, the mutual zero sequence coupling between the parallel lines has to be considered to
avoid overreach of the underreaching Zone 1 during ground faults. On the other hand, for the overreaching zone
the underreaching should be avoided. Therefore, the following philosophy is proposed:
To compensate overreach of the Zone 1 zero sequence compensation factor is set as for line operation, whereby
the parallel line is opened and earthed on both sides:
= 1.35
XE/XL factor was rounded down because of the other OHL systems which are in parallel to this line.
Therefore, there is more effects on the zone reach. To avoid overreaching of zone 1 a lower XE/XL factor was
chosen.
For the overreaching zones the single line operation (parallel line opened and not earthed) is concerned:
Figure 5: Parallel line opened and not-earthed on both sides (=single line)

The maximum permissible resistive reach should be checked to ensure that sufficient safety margin exists
between the relay boundary of the zone 5 and the maximum load impedance.
This is considered for the zone settings. Therefore it is proposed to set the parameters 1241 and 1243 as
follows:
Earth faults
In solidly earthed networks, the pick-up value 3I0> should be set below the minimum expected earth fault
current value. Additionally, it must exceed the maximum load current unbalance < 0.1 of In (estimated!).
Therefore set (In=1A)
Additionally, it must exceed the maximum operating voltage unbalance < 0.1 of Un (estimated!). Therefore set:
1204 3U0> 10 V
For the ground fault recognition it is recommended to use either the current or the voltage criterion:
To prevent an overreach of the zones in case of double-phase-to-earth faults the default setting is
recommended:

Earth fault overcurrent
In earthed systems, where extremely high fault resistances may exist during earth faults (e.g. due to sandy soil
etc.) the fault detection of the distance protection can not pick up because the resulting earth fault impedance is
outside the fault detection characteristic. The 7SA522 provides a protection function for such high resistance
earth faults as follows.
According to protection basic design there are two separate communication channels. Therefore it is proposed
to set the parameter 3102 to NO.
