Problem 1. (25 pts) (Convolution property) The response of an LTI system to an

input x(t) is y(t) = x(t) ∗ h(t). Where h(t) is the system impulse response.

(a) (i) (10 pts) The convolution of x(t) with h(t) is

Z ∞
y(t) = x(t) ∗ h(t) = x(τ )h(t − τ )dτ
−∞

If the Fourier transform of x(t) is X(jω) and h(t) is H(jω) then Show
that
Z ∞Z ∞
Y (jw) = x(τ )h(t − τ )e−jwt dτ dt
−∞ −∞

(ii) (5 pts)
By appropriate change of variables, show that

Y (jw) = X(jω)H(jω),
where X(jω) is the Fourier transform of x(t) and H(jω) is the Fourier
transform of h(t).
(b) Using the analysis equation find the Fourier transform of the following sig-
nals. Also sketch the magnitude and phase as a function of frequency includ-
ing both positive and negative frequencies.
(i) (5 pts)
x(t) = δ(−5 − t)
(ii) (5 pts)
x(t) = e−a|t| a real, a > 0
(iii) (5 pts)
x(t) = e(−1−3j)t u(−t)

Problem 2. (15 pts) Find the continuous time signal corresponding to the following
Fourier transforms.

(i) (5 pts)
X(jω) = 4/(2 + w2 )
(ii) (5 pts)
Y (jω) = 2((δ(100 − ω) + δ(−100 − ω)))
(iii) (5 pts)
Z(jw) = X(jw)Y (jw)
Where X(jω) and Y (jω) are given in parts (a) and (b) respectively.
Problem 3. (10 pts)
The frequency-shift property of Fourier transform is given

F ejωo t x(t) = X(j(ω − ωo )

(a) (5 pts ) Prove the frequency shift property by applying frequency shift to
the analysis equation
Z ∞
X(jω) = x(t)e−jωt dt
−∞

(b) (5 pts) Use properties of Fourier transform to show by induction that the
Fourier transform of

x(t) = tn−1 /(n − 1)!e−at u(t) a>0

is

X(jω) = 1/(a + jω)n

Problem 4. [20 points: CT Fourier Transform ]

(a) [3 pts] Consider two LTI systems with impulse responses h1 (t) and h2 (t)
with frequency responses denoted by H1 (jw) and H2 (jw). If both these
systems are inverses of one another, find the relationship between H1 (jw)
and H2 (jw)
(b) [3 pts] Consider a system with
(
1, 2 ≤ |w| ≤ 4
H(jw) =
0 otherwise
Determine if we can find out inverse of this system; if yes find frequency
response of the inverse system; if no give a reason.
(c) [3 pts] If h(t) is the inverse Fourier transform of H(jw) in part (b), determine
whether h(t) is real or not. Give a reason.
(d) [3 pts] We know that the F(δ(t + 5)) = ej5w . Using duality of Fourier
transform, find F(ej5t ), where F(.) denotes the Fourier transform.
(e) [3 pts] Suppose the signal x(t) = ej5t × cos(2π1000t)is transmitted over a
wireless channel. Find and sketch (with labeling) the Fourier transform of
x(t)
(f) [3 pts] Suppose the receiver receives x(t) of part (e) and multiplies it with
the same carrier in order to recover the original signal back, i.e. y(t) =
x(t) × cos(2π1000t). Find and sketch (with proper labeling) the Fourier
transform of y(t).

1
(g) [2 pts] How can we recover the desired signal, ej5t from y(t) of part(f). If
it involves a filter, determine the type and the range of the cutoff frequency
where it would work.
