The Thai Writing System

Thai alphabet has 44 consonants, 32 vowels, 8 final consonant

sounds, 4 tone marks and various other symbols for punctuation,
numbers etc. Although there are irregular pronunciations.

1. Consonant Classes

The 44 consonants are divided into 3 classes- high, middle

and low. Since it is one of the critical factors in determining a
syllable’s tone, you must know the consonant class in order to
correctly pronounce what you have read.

Below are the 3 classes of consonant. The rare consonant

are paired with common consonants and put in parentheses. Thai
obsolete two consonants are excluded.

 The consonant class system means that when we write
consonant with the same sound but belonging to different tones
as exemplified below.

2. Vowels

Thai has 32 vowels and has two kind of it : 13 shots vowels,

13 Long vowels. Also, the tone rules for short and long vowels
are different.

Notice 1. ฤ, ฤๅ, ฦ, ฦๅ are rare.

2. sà-rà -ำ (am) , ใ- (ai) , ไ- (ai) , เ-า

Can pronounce both of short sound and long sound depends on
vocabulary but will be same tone as long vowels.

3. Final Consonant
 There are 8 final consonant sounds which can end a syllable
follows :

4. Tone marks

Thai has 4 tone marks that have different values when used
in conjunction with the three consonant classes.
The tone makes aways put on the top of consonant or some
vowels as follows :

Lesson 1
The 44 consonants represent the 21 consonant sounds in
the Thai writing system. 28 consonants are commonly used and
14 consonant are used to write loanword. 2 consonants, that is ฃ
and ฅ were lost.
Consonants are classified into 3 tonal classes known as
high, middle and low.
1. Middle Consonants ( อักษรกลาง - àk-sŏrn glaang)
There are nine middle consonants in Thai as follows :

Vowels (สระ sà-rà)
Thai has two kind of vowels : short and long. Long vowels
has 12 commonly vowels , 1 rare vowel and 1 unused vowel as
follows:
