Week 11 - Conjunctions

Conjunctions:
• Conjunctions are words we use to join words or groups of words (phrases or clauses)
together.
• Coordinating conjunctions, which are the focus of this lesson, can be remembered using
the acronym FANBOYS (For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So).
• Two nouns (whether they are singular or plural) or pronouns joined by the coordinating
conjunctions form a compound subject.
-If a compound subject is made by joining a singular noun and a plural noun using
“nor” or “or” then their verb is either singular or plural depending on which part of
the compound subject is closer to it.
-If two or more subjects in a compound subject are joined by “and,” the plural form
of the verb is used.
• Two verbs joined by a coordinating conjunction form a compound verb.
• Two clauses formed by a coordinating conjunction form a compound sentence.
-Commas are usually placed before the coordinating conjunction in compound
sentences.

An independent clause can stand alone as a sentence. It has a subject and a verb and is a
complete thought.

I like red apples.

Karen bakes very good cakes.

• Do not use a comma before a conjunction that does not connect two independent clauses.
• Use a comma between a coordinating that connects two independent clauses.

We arrived in Chicago on time, but my uncle was not there to meet us.

Harry like to eat steak, but he likes broccoli more.

Our train arrived on time but at the wrong station.  not an independent clause
