1. General description
The ELT remote control was designed to supersede Artex´s original ELT-cockpit-panel-switch when
the cockpit is to be NVG-compatible. Additional features are incorporated.
The ELT remote control provides all basic functions of the original cockpit panel switch. In this
correlation, for the basic ELT-functions, we refer to the Artex instruction manual.
That means, that this documentation is a supplement to the basic ELT-documentation.
NVG-compatibility:
The most important feature of the ELT remote control is that it´s NVG-compatible. This ELT remote
control uses a blue indicator LED. This blue LED was tested for it´s NVG compatibility and is
considered suitable.
In additon, a NVIS green B backlight for the labeling is attached to the ELT remote control. The
backlighting function is described in section 6.
Audio output:
Another feature is an audio output that can be used to indicate ELT activity via intercom. Description
see below.
To check the battery, a test button at the front panel is installed. Low battery is indicated during test
with the blue LED flashing. Details see section 3 and 4.
2. Installation remarks
The ELT remote control is designed to be installed inside the helicopter and it can be fixed with two
screws through the front panel.
Mounting holes are Ø 3,2mm (0.125 inch), distance (C) from 68,4 mm to 72,8 mm (2.693 to 2.866
inch), symetrical to both frontpanel axis (see drawing).
B
A
All electrical connections are made with the connector at the rear.
See below the switches, buttons and indicators on the front of the panel.
The battery (Artex P/N: 452-0128) has to be used for the basic ELT-functions. To fit/remove the
battery, open the cover by removing the five screws on top of the housing. To insert the battery, slide
it in as shown in the photo below. The battery terminals have to be in accordance with the ELT
remote control´s gold contacts.
Take care of these two precision gold contacts, do not press them downwards, contact
movement is horizontally.
When inserted correct, the battery will be fixed exactly in it´s housing as shown below.
After insertion/removing of the battery, always close the housing and mount the cover with its five
screws (torque = 0,6Nm +/-6%) again.
To check the battery state, the test button (button location see section 3, use a small screwdriver or a
ball-point pen etc.) can be pressed. After pressing the test button, three beeps from the internal buzzer
are audible, the audio output is active for three seconds and the blue LED will be illuminated. At
normal battery condition, the LED is constantly on, when battery is weak, the LED is flashing.
Remove battery as soon as possible, when flashing. No reaction when test button is pressed indicates
an empty battery or failure of the ELT remote control.
Note: The user of the ELT remote control is responsable for checking and
changing of the battery. A record of required change is in the aircraft log book.

workable electronic systems and technology
The ELT operates in the same way as described in Artex´s operation manual. The Artex cockpit panel
switch is the eqivalent of the ELT remote control´s switch „S1“ (see section 3. „Switches and
indicators“ of this manual) and Artex´s red LED indicator is equal to ELT remote control´s blue LED
(labeled „ELT“). As mentioned in this section, all ELT-functions described in the Artex-manual are
identical. Thus, only the additional features are described.
A audio output is equiped to indicate an active ELT via the intercom-system. This audio signal is a
dual tone signal, sounding like a german police car siren. The level of the audio signal is factory set
and can be changed with a potentiometer (labeled „Audio (level)“) inside the housing. The audio
signal is a micro-controller-produced rectangular signal which is modified and given out via a
transformator to achieve isolation. It is not a „clean“ sine-wave signal.
ELT remote control uses Artex´s „Light“-output to generate the audio signal for the intercom. It is not
useful to generate the audio output immediately after the activation of this output because the
„Light“-output is used not only for indicating an active ELT but also for indication of some test/setup
routines (see Artex manual). So, to avoid an „alert“ in the intercom during such a test/setup routine,
the audio output is inhibited for the first four seconds after the initial trigger signal and only when the
„Light“-output is still active between four and 20 seconds, it is activated.
Due to this, do not perform ELT tests in series within 20s. Otherwise, the first „Light“-output signal
of the second ELT-test-sequence will produce an audio alert to the intercom.
The audio output can be reset by pressing the „Audio off“ button or, when connected, by activation of
the „Ext. audio off“-input. Once the audio output is reset, it is off as long as the actual „activation-
sequence“ is in progress. That means, that the „Light“-output has to be inactive for at least 20s till the
audio output can be activated again.
ELT remote control is equiped with an „Emergency switch“ input. This input can be used to activate
the ELT (and in consequence to activate ELT remote control itself). If the „Emergency switch“ input
is set to GND (0V), ELT will be turned on. This input overrides the frontpanel switch „S1“.
Blue indicator-LED:
There is a blue LED for the ELT-function indication. Although there is no disturbance when NVG is
used, this LED indicator can be set to „day“-mode, „night“-mode and „NVG“-mode. These three
modes are set automatically by indicator-lines from the helicopter.
There is highest priority for the „NVG“-mode, that means, whenever the input „NVG“ is active, the
indicator is set to lowest intensity independent from other active inputs. The lowest priority is for the
„Day“ mode which is selected when no other intensity-select-input is active.
Backlighting:
In the moment when one (or both) of the „Night“ or „NVG“-mode inputs are active, the power supply
(+28V) for backlighting and the helicopter illumination dimm-voltage is present, the labeling of the
panel is backlighted green.
That means, that backlighting intensity is controlled by the voltage level at the input „Dimm-control-
voltage“. Dimm voltage range is 4V to 28V nominal, backlighting intensity is from 10V (lowest, 0%)
to 28V (highest, 100%), scaled in accordance with the defined dimming curve. Maximum
backlighting intensity is factory set and can be changed with a potentiometer „BL (intensity)“ inside
the housing.
Circuit diagrams: See circuit diagrams at appendix A at the end of this documentation.
Connector details:
Connector is a industrial standard, filtered Sub-D 25 male connector with slide locking, mating
connector is a standard Sub-D 25 female connector with crimp-contacts (AWG 20/AWG22) and
housing with slide locking, P/N for the mating connector: 0028-02
