2. ITT INDICATING SYSTEM CHECKS

Various analyzers and equipment are available for the purpose of checking and calibrating the engine indicating systems. The
JETCAL Analyzer (067, Table 601) referenced in the following steps is recommended for checking engine performance, although
any equipment that meets the specified accuracy requirements may be used. The engine instruments mounting bracket (068, Table
601) is used to mount the engine instruments outside the instrument panel during the test.
Accuracy Requirements:
ITT within ± 4.0°C for LJ-1361, LJ-1363 and After
Some modifications of these procedures may be necessary if test equipment not specified in this chapter is used. All pressures,
resistances, and voltages are standard values and will remain unaffected, regardless of the type of equipment being used.
Factors affecting the accuracy of the equipment, such as calibration, frequency of certification or misuse, must be taken into
consideration before any equipment may be used to check or calibrate the engine indicating systems.
The following ITT system checks should be made anytime a new indicator or thermocouple is installed or when a fault is suspected in
the indicating system.
Note: Engine cool-down is not required to perform a calibration check of the engine indicator, but is required to perform the
thermocouple-resistance checks. The internal engine components and thermocouple will require at least ten hours of
cool-down time to reach ambient temperature.
Prior to performing any of the following checks remove all electrical power from the airplane. Remove the engine cowling (Ref. 71-11-
01, 401). When all checks of the ITT indicating system are complete, replace the indicator if all other areas of the system were within
tolerance, or replace other components as found necessary.
Note: When installing the nuts for the thermocouple leads, torque the chromel nut to 8 to 12 inch-pounds and the alumel nut
to 10 to 15 inch-pounds.
When testing is complete, connect all wiring that was disconnected for the test, restore electrical power to the airplane and install the
engine cowling (Ref. 71-11-01, 401).

A. ITT Indicator Calibration Check

(1) Disconnect the engine T5 and trim thermocouple wire harnesses at the T5 terminal block mounted on the engine gas generator
case. The airplane wire harness remains connected to the terminal block.
Note: The test equipment listed in Step (2) is temperature compensated. This means that the desired test temperature

as specified in Table 602 is applied to the indicator under test and the operator does not have to compensate the
millivolt input signal for the ambient air temperature. If the operator is using an non temperature compensated
device such as a standard millivolt signal generator then the millivolt value shown in Table 602 will have to be
modified due to the effect of the ambient air temperature on the test. Refer to the MANUAL TEMPERATURE
COMPENSATION procedure data below to determine the input signal value to the indicator.
Ensure that the polarity of the alumel and chromel wires are strictly observed when making the test connections.
(2) Connect a device capable of generating a millivolt signal relative to the temperature test points. The JETCAL Analyzer (067,
Table 601), Omega Thermometer/Calibrator (071, Table 601), or Barfield ITT Test Set (069, Table 601) is suitable for this test.
Follow the test unit operator's manual instructions as applicable to this check.
(3) Apply 28 vdc to the airplane and power the ITT indicator.
(4) Select the 200°C calibration point on the test unit to apply the equivalent millivolt signal to the airframe thermocouple wire
harness. If the indicator reads between 183° and 217°C, it is within tolerance for the 200°C test point.
(5) Repeat the previous step for each test point (Ref. Table 602).
(6) If the indicator readings fall within tolerance for all test points, perform the remaining ITT system checks to verify integrity of the
thermocouple and thermocouple wire harness. If the indicator readings do not fall within tolerance, always perform a check of the
thermocouple wire harness before replacing the indicator.

B. Manual Temperature Compensation

This procedure is used to calculate the effect of the ambient air temperature has on the millivolt (mv) signal shown in Table 602.
The compensating value (CV) derived from this procedure is subtracted from the millivolt (mv) value shown in Table 602 to
provide the proper test input millivolt signal. A temperature compensation chart is provided (Ref. Figure 601).
The formula for determining this compensating value (CV) is: Ambient Temperature (T) in degrees F. multiplied by 0.0224 minus
0.7191 or CV = (T x 0.0224) - 0.7191. Using a temperature of 90 degrees F. as an example, we have: CV = (90 x 0.0224) - 0.7191
or CV = 2.016 - 0.7191 or CV = 1.2969.
Table 602 shows that the 200°C test point millivolt reading is 8.137. This value less the compensating value (CV) for 90°F results
in a test input millivolt value of 6.8401 (8.137 - 1.2969 = 6.8401).

C. Airframe ITT Wire Harness Continuity Check

(1) Disconnect the airplane wire harness at the T5 terminal block on the gas generator case.
(2) Disconnect the airplane wire harness at the ITT indicator connector.
(3) Use an Ohmmeter (070, Table 601). The Ohmmeter should indicate continuity on each lead if the harness is good. If resistance
is indicated, suspect that a short or break somewhere in the ITT wire harness is responsible for any erroneous ITT indicator
readings.

D. ITT Thermocouple-Loop-Resistance Check

(1) Disconnect the trim thermocouple leads and airplane wire harness from the T5 terminal block.
(2) With the T5 harness intact, connect an Ohmmeter (070, Table 601) to the terminal (alumel to alumel and chromel to chromel).
(3) Measure loop resistance of the T5 system at the terminal block leads. Resistance for a normal system should be between 0.58
and 0.74 ohms.
Note: It is possible that a condition may exist where several probes are broken or damaged and resistance still falls
within the accepted limits. This condition may cause erroneous temperature indications due to reduced
samplings, although the loop check resistance was in tolerance during test.
(4) Refer to the applicable Pratt & Whitney Engine Maintenance Manual for procedures used to remove the engine power section
assembly and check the harness leads and system probes.

E. ITT Thermocouple Insulation Resistance Check

(1) Connect the Ohmmeter (070, Table 601) to the alumel lead on the T5 terminal block and to ground
(gas generator case).
(2) Measure the resistance of the circuit. A functional thermocouple should have at least 5,000 ohms of resistance indication on the
ohmmeter.

(3) Repeat Steps (1) and (2) for the thermocouple's chromel lead.
(4) If either lead check does not meet the resistance requirements specified, the engine must be split at the C-flange and the
system components tested and repaired. Refer to the applicable Pratt & Whitney Engine Maintenance Manual.
