This chapter reviews equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, and simplest form and all
concepts learned or reviewed previously in 4th grade.
Important Vocabulary
fraction- the number of parts in a whole
equivalent fractions- different fractions that name the same number (part of the whole).
simplest form- no longer possible to divide both the numerator and denominator by any
number except 1
improper fraction- when the numerator is equal to or larger than the denominator
mixed numbers- fraction greater than 1 with a whole number part and a fractional part

Chapter 2: Fractions and Division
• understand the relationship between fractions and division
• solve simple word problems showing the relationship between fractions and division
This chapter reviews that division is related to fractions, and we use division to convert an
improper fraction to a mixed number.
Important Vocabulary
improper fraction- when the numerator is equal to or larger than the denominator
mixed numbers- fraction greater than 1 with a whole number part and a fractional part

• Solve simple word problems involving the addition and subtraction of fractions
In fourth grade students learned to add or subtract like or related fractions. In this chapter
students will learn to add and subtract unlike fractions.
Important Vocabulary
like fractions- fractions where the denominators are the same
related fractions- fraction where the denominator of one fraction is a simple multiple of
the denominator of the other fraction
unlike fractions- the denominator of one fraction is not a simple multiple of the
denominator of the other

In this chapter students will interpret a fraction times a mixed number as repeated addition of the
fraction, e.g., 1/6 x 3 = 1/6 + 1/6 + 1/6. They will learn to solve the problem by multiplying the
numerators together and then finding the fraction.
In fourth grade students learned to find the fraction of a set when the answer was a whole
number. In this chapter students will learn to find the fraction of a set when the answer is
not a whole number, first with concrete illustrations, and then using multiplication.
In this chapter students will apply all the concepts of fractions learned to solve word
problems. The word problems require students to change unit of measurements in fraction
form as well as expressing a certain amount as a fraction of another amount.
