Boston Globe Summer Reporting Internship Essay
Topic: A memorable moment in my life
I have had a lot of big moments in my life. Sometimes I didn’t realize how big or
how impactful they would be, but when I sit back and think about all of the big things in
life I am reminded of the moment I knew I wanted to be a journalist.
When I came to school at East Tennessee State University I decided my major
would be Media and Communications with a concentration in journalism. In my mind, I
had always wanted to be a writer, but it wasn’t until my summer internship at Charleston
Magazine where I was sure I had chosen the right path. As an intern, I was responsible
for the “About Town” section which consisted of finding events around the town for the
month in different categories such as outdoors or arts and culture.
One evening, I was assigned to the Spoleto Opening Night event in downtown
Charleston. A photography intern went with me and I was responsible for getting
interviews with the ballet dancers from the big performance prior to the party as well as
noting the atmosphere and food and décor. Going throughout the party for photographs
and interviews was a thrill. I had done interviews for my school paper a hundred times,
but nothing compared to that real experience of capturing a big event with my pen.
Leaving the venue, I realized I never wanted to do anything other than journalism.
It was that moment that I had the feeling of reporting on the lifestyle and events
of people completely different for me would be the most exciting to report on. To many
people, being sent to report on a story seems like a small moment, but it was the way I
felt that made the moment bigger than anything I had ever experienced.
